Bayelsa Records 18 Polio Cases

Bayelsa State has recorded 18 polio cases in the last eight months in
Yenagoa Local Government Area, the Disease Surveillance and
Notification Unit has said.

The DSN said 18 cases of the Acute Flaccid Paralysis were reported
within the 15 wards of the the council.

An officer of DSN, Mr. Oyaba Diemebonso, said on Wednesday that AFP is
a disease condition which is mostly found in children that leads to
polio.

He said apart from polio cases, nine suspected measles cases and three
Neonatal Tetanus were also reported within the period.

Diemebonso described the disease outbreak as "threat" to society,
stressing that DSN was committed to checking diseases and promote
quality health in the LG.

He commended the effort of World Health Organisation on health
development in the council, saying the establishment of 16 AFP
surveillance facial sites in the area was a step in the right
direction.

"Yenagoa LG has 15 wards and 16 functional WHO AFP surveillance facial
sites. The surveillance sites are both in public and private hospital,
clinics, and health centres in the communities.

"In these communities, we visit and gather information and capture
data on diseases on a weekly and monthly basis, especially the
epidemic-prone diseases like cholera, Lassa fever, measles among
others.

"So far, we have been able to report 18 cases of AFP, nine cases of
children with suspected measles and three NNT from January till date.

"I urge clinicians and other health workers to support DSN officers
and embrace the use of Integrated Disease Surveillance and Respond and
other immediate notifiable diseases.

He explained that the use of IDSR would go a long way in controlling
any endemic disease in the council area and as well as Bayelsa.
