Crisis In Plateau Varsity Over Deputy VC's Appointment

Plateau State Governor, Mr. Jonah Jang, and authorities of the Solomon
Lar University, Bokkos, are on a war path over the extension of the
appointment of the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dadi Davou.

The development came as scores of students and workers escaped death
last Friday when a three-storey building, which is under construction
in the university, collapsed.

The contract for the building was said to have been awarded to an
official of the university.

A source in the university alleged that the contractor produced blocks
far above the recommended numbers per bag of cement.

Davou, said to be the governor's kinsman, who was on sabbatical to the
university from the University of Jos, was appointed as the DVC for
two and half years.

But upon the expiration of his appointment, the Pro Chancellor and
Chairman of the Governing Council, Prof. Sam Ale, was said to have
written Jang, as the Visitor to the university, to extend the DVC's
tenure allegedly without the approval of the Senate of the university.

In the letter to the Visitor, a copy of which was obtained from a
source in the Ministry of Education, the pro chancellor had claimed
that the decision was taken at the 22nd Regular Meeting of the
council.

But sources in the university said no such decision was taken at the
said meeting.

The letter, dated August 1, 2014, read, "The Vice Chancellor of the
University announced to the council at the 22nd Regular Meeting called
onJuly1, that the tenure of the deputy vice chancellor would be
expiring by September 2014. Council therefore wishes to receive the
views of the Visitor of the university to enable it to take decision.
You may wish to give your view on the issue for adequate attention."

But approval signed by the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Nanle
Dashen, on behalf of the Visitor, was said to have irked the Senate,
which saw it as a usurpation of their function, more so as the views
of the vice chancellor was not sought by the pro chancellor before
writing to the visitor.
