President Muhammadu Buhari has said that there is no credible evidence
if the Chibok Girls are still alive.

about the fate of the over 200 schoolgirls who were kidnapped in April
2014.

Buhari said neighbouring countries were also being contacted to
determine whether they are in those countries.
He said his government wouldn't mind negotiating with credible Boko
Haram leaders to free the girls if it could be ascertained that they
were still alive.

At the time of this report, the President was till fielding questions
from journalists.

Army
In a statement by the National President of the Council, Mazi

neither at war nor a conquered people. Mr. President should intervene
in this matter before it turns into another thing. We have the right

Nnamdi Kanu Didn’t Apologise To Buhari -- Lawyer

It is impossible that Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of
Biafra (IPOB) and director of Radio Biafra, tendered an apology to
President Muhammadu Buhari, his lawyer, Vincent Obetta, has said.

Speaking with TheCable on Wednesday, Obetta said reports of Kanu's
apology were proof that government was trying to use all instruments
at its disposal to "puncture" the Biaffra campaigner's defence. "It is
not true," he said. "The government is using every instrument to
puncture what we are doing."

The
Department of State Services (DSS) arraigned Kanu in court in October.

Shuaibu Usman, presiding over the chief magistrate court, Wuse zone 2,
Abuja, had earlier discharged him on all counts of criminal conspiracy
and ownership of an unlawful society brought against him by the
federal government. The federal government then filed a fresh
five-count charge of treasonable felony against Kanu, after Adeniyi
Ademola, a justice of the federal high court, Abuja, ordered the DSS
to release him "unconditionally".

In his ruling, Ademola held that the continued detention of Kanu by
the DSS was unlawful, since the accused was yet to be charged on
suspicion of terrorism. Speaking before the federal high court the
following day, Kanu said he has lost confidence in the court's
abilities to give an order and have the authorities follow it, asking
the court to leave him in detention. "I will rather remain in
detention than subject myself to a trial that I know amounts to
perversion of justice," he had said.

Imo Budgets N102.2bn For 2016 Fiscal Year

Imo State Governor has presented a proposed budget of N102,208,328,832
for the 2016 fiscal year, to the state House of Assembly, tagged
"Budget of consolidation and continuity."

Making the presentation, yesterday, Governor Rochas Okorocha said that
this was lower than the 2015 budget by N41.11 billion, which
translates to 28.7 percent.

"The budget consists of N44.043 billion capital expenditure,
representing 43.1 percent of the total budget and N58.165 billion
recurrent expenditure, which represents 56.9 percent of the total
budget," Okorocha said.

The governor put the projected recurrent revenue at N76,074,165,612,
while the capital receipts was put at N26,134,316,419.
Okorocha said that outside normal taxes and fees, government intends
to collect over N522.55 million through the Imo Geographic Information
Services, IGIS, from the Ministry of Lands, Survey, Housing and Urban
Planning, as well as over N2.5 billion from anticipated interest and
bond proceeds from government investment within the second quarter of
2016.

"N5 billion is expected to be generated through the Environmental
Transformation Commission, ENTRACO, and other revenue consultants set
up by government," Okorocha said.
Saying that his administration will endeavour to enforce all the
existing revenue laws through revenue courts and effective use of
Alternative Dispute Resolution methods, Okorocha noted that government
remains committed to reducing incidences of tax evasion to the barest
minimum in the new fiscal year.

Bloody Christmas In Borno As Boko Haram Kills 14, Burns Entire Village

At least 14 people were killed and several others injured by Boko
Haram gunmen in a Christmas Day attack on a village in northeastern
Nigeria, vigilantes said Saturday.

Attacking astride bicycles, the jihadists invaded Kimba village in
flashpoint Borno state around 10:00 pm on Friday, opening fire on
residents and torching their homes.

"The gunmen killed 14 people and burnt the whole village before they
fled," Mustapha Karimbe, a civilian assisting the military in fighting
Boko Haram, told AFP.

"Not a single house was spared in the arson," another vigilante, Musa
Suleiman, said after visiting the razed village.
Hundreds of Kimba residents fled to Biu nearby, where they were put up
in a refugee camp already brimming with people running from Boko
Haram.

The attack comes just days before Nigerian President Muhammadu
Buhari's self-imposed deadline to stamp out the group expires on
December 31 and in the same week he said that Nigeria has
"technically" defeated the jihadists.

Buhari took office in May vowing to end the six-year insurgency that
has killed over 17,000 people and spooked much-needed investors in
Africa's largest economy and foremost oil producer.

Nigerian troops have won back territory from Boko Haram, but in
response the jihadists have increasingly resorted to suicide bombers —
many of them young children — to wage war for an independent Islamic
state.

The militants have damaged what little infrastructure existed in the
country's underdeveloped north at a time when the government is facing
a cash crunch as a result of the free-falling oil price.

According to the Global Terrorism Index, a report released by the New
York-based Institute for Economics and Peace, it "has become the most
deadly terrorist group in the world".

The UN children's agency said this week that over one million Nigerian
schoolchildren have been kept out of school because of the conflict,
warning that the lack of education will fuel radicalisation in and
around Nigeria.

The jihadists have allied themselves with the Islamic State group, but
experts doubt the scale and scope of the collaboration.
Still, there are growing fears that a once localised hardline Muslim
movement is morphing into a regional jihadist threat as Boko Haram
launches attacks on Nigeria's neighbours Chad, Cameroon and Niger.

FG Removes Subsidy, To Reduce Petrol Price From January 1st

The Federal Government would on January 1, 2016 reduce the pump price
of Premium Motor Spirit, popularly known as petrol, to N85 per litre.

The Minister of State for Petroleum, Dr. Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu, who
broke the news to journalists, during a tour of the Port Harcourt
refinery on Christmas Day said that the Federal government is working
to reduce the pump price of petrol to about 85 or 86 naira per litre
by Jan 1st.

He said efforts were on to get the refinery to achieve 60 percent
production capacity and to supply about 11 million liters of petrol
daily.

"If you look at the new PPPRA template that we developed and which I
just signed off two days ago, when it is announced you will find out
that for now ,and I use the emphatic word of the President for now,
the price of the refined product will actually be lower than 87 naira,
It will be 85. We will probably announce that in January if the prices
hold.

"Like I said, we have done a modulation calculation and it is showing
us below N87. I imagine that if PPPRA publishes it today, it will
become effective immediately. But
the 1st of January that is when we are looking at."

"What that does for you is that its modulating. If it goes up you move
up, if it comes down you come down. So we take away the fact of having
to go find funds to pay for these subsidies that we cannot afford.

"More importantly we try to be as close to the pump price that we have
now as possible," he said.

Hold Lai Mohammed Responsible For Future Boko Haram Attacks – The THIRD Force

Press Statement

The THIRD Force, a coalition of young Nigerian politicians and
professionals committed to the birth of a new Nigeria, has called on
Nigerians across political, ethnic and religious divides to hold Lai
Mohammed responsible for any further attacks carried out by the Boko
Haram terrorist group on the citizens of Nigeria.

The group was reacting to a statement by Lai Mohammed, Nigeria's
Minister of Information on Wednesday declaring that the war against
Boko Haram has been won and the Nigerian Army has met the December
2015 deadline given to them by President Buhari to defeat Boko Haram.

In a statement issued on Thursday in Zaria by Ishaq Abubakar, the
spokesperson of The THIRD Force, the group described Lai Mohammed's
comments as reckless and irresponsible.

"While the defeat and end of Boko Haram in Nigeria is a dream all
well-meaning citizens of Nigeria desire and have supported the
government and the Nigerian Army to accomplish, The THIRD Force
however believes that there should be limits to reckless and
irresponsible propaganda especially when it is coming from the office
of a public officer paid with taxpayers' money.

"Lai Mohammed's hasty declaration on Wednesday that Boko Haram has
been defeated was not only misguided but an idiotic attempt to end the
war against Boko Haram on the pages of newspapers.

"We understand that the Nigerian government has been under pressure to
show the world that the December deadline to end Boko Haram given by
President Buhari to the Nigerian Army is feasible. But the reality on
ground suggests otherwise. No fewer than 1,500 Nigerians were killed
by Boko Haram in the past six months according to Associated Press
reports. Only last week, Boko Haram attacks in the northeast of
Nigeria left over 30 dead and 20 others wounded. News of the attacks
was slow to emerge because telecom masts in the area have been
destroyed in previous Boko Haram raids, hindering communication. Many
more attacks are happening on a daily basis that do not make the news
headlines. Is this normal? Are these not Nigerian citizens or are they
mere statistics in Lai Mohammed's school of governance by propaganda?

"Just last Thursday, Boko Haram insurgents killed 14 people,
decapitating some of them, when they raided Kamuya village, the
hometown of Lt. General Tukur Buratai, the Nigerian Army Chief's
mother, and burnt it down. Are these mere statistics or is Lai
Mohammed telling the world that this is normal in a country where
terrorism has been defeated?

"Even if the war against Boko Haram has been won and Lai Mohammed can
now relocate from the comfort of Abuja to Maiduguri, what is the
strategic sense in this needless public bravado? Would it not have
been wiser to wait a few weeks to assess the extent of this "victory"
before rushing to town to celebrate?

"Lai Mohammed will soon realize the hard way that there is a wide gulf
between being the spokesperson of the government of a country of over
170 million citizens and being the spokesperson of an opposition
party.

"Let it be on record that by declaring this phantom victory against
Boko Haram, Lai Mohammed is helping the government of Nigeria endanger
more Nigerian lives. Such a thoughtlessly provocative statement from a
senior Nigerian government official is capable of eliciting a response
from Boko Haram and their allies through bomb blasts and brutal
attacks against defenseless Nigerian citizens.

"Lai Mohammed must now begin to pray. He must pray hard that the Boko
Haram he defeated on the pages of newspapers are actually defeated and
remain defeated. The blood of any Nigerian citizens lost to fresh Boko
Haram attacks after this careless statement will be upon his head."

How PDP Can Regain Strenght Before 2019 General Elections

PHOTO: Author, Adelaja Adeoye is a Lagos-based blogger and a
commentator on social and political issues. He tweets via
@AdelajaAdeoye.

This article expresses the author's opinion only.

Editor's note: The PDP are getting used to their status as the main
opposition strength in the country after losing the 2015 general
elections to their main opponents, the APC. Adelaja Adeoye, a
Lagos-based blogger and a commentator on social and political issues,
fleshes out a strategy for the PDP to gain its footing an return to
prominence in the upcoming 2019 elections.

The massive loss the PDP suffered certainly did not come as surprise
to most Nigerians and political analysts because of the magnitude of
the APC's campaign and tenacity to wrestle powers from Goodluck
Jonathan.

The PDP, since its birth in 1998 had held on to power for 16 years,
starting from the eight-year administration of Obasanjo/Atiku, three
years of Yar'Adua/Jonathan, and five years of Jonathan/Sambo.

The funny thing is that well over 75% of the same set of people who
made up the 16 years of the PDP are now in the new ruling APC.

Zoning arrangement

The arrangement of the PDP was to rotate power between the North and
the South based on agreement by principle which was not really bonded
by constitution of the party. After Obasanjo's eight-year rulership,
which represented the slot of all the three geopolitical zones of
Southern Nigeria (South-West, South-East and South-South), there came
the turn of Northern people. Yar'Adua stepped in, but, sadly, his
tenure was cut short by death which threw the nation into political
tension and almost caused constitutional crises because the North were
not willing to give up the slot claiming that they must complete their
eight years. Jonathan as the then vice-president came in, in acting
capacity, and completed the remaining tenure of the late Yar'Adua.

Jonathan was able to rally round members of the PDP and governors for
support to be elected as a substantive president in 2011. After
completing of his four-year tenure, he was supposed to quietly hand
over power back to North. And the trouble began for the PDP.

The ex-president Goodluck Jonathan led his party to electoral
battlefield against Nigeria's former military dictator, General
Muhammadu Buhari of the APC in 2015, and lost so woefully that the PDP
lost many of its controlled states to the APC.

The biggest mistake the PDP made was to allow themselevs to be
arm-twisted by Jonathan and his men against the party's zoning
arrangement. The APC as a new party which clearly understood the
agitation of the North and weakness of the PDP, swung into action
immediately by mobilizing and consolidating its membership across
every states. The APC in their usual political antics began to incite
Nigerians against the PDP using the biggest epidemic befalling the
country: corruption, Boko Haram, the Chibok girls saga and many other
prompts to blackmail the party out of power. They campaigned
rigorously and ensured the PDP and Jonathan were defeated by either
hook or crook.

Setbacks of new technology

Jonathan approved the use of card-readers for general elections
thinking that he was bringing innovation into our electoral system,
not knowing that the device was a plot targeted at removing him from
the office.

The Ekiti state governor, Dr. Peter Ayodele Fayose, warned and
campaigned against the card-reader machines, but Jonathan and probably
those that stood to benefit from the contract refused to heed to his
call.

Fayose's argument was that a device that had not been put to use
cannot be trusted at a general election. He was vindicated with the
massive complaint that greeted the use of the device; even Jonathan
himself was quoted by some section of media that card-readers should
be revived before 2019 election after a card-reader machine almost
prevented him and his family members from voting during the Bayelsa
governorship election.

The PDP is still nursing the wound suffered at the poll, but the
question is how long would the party continue mourning the loss?

Survival strategy

The PDP needs to put its house in order as soon as possible. Six
months is more than enough to put itself back in shape instead of
wobbling and fumbling as a viable opposition, or else a new mega party
should be activated.

Nigerians expect the PDP to put up a strong opposition against the
ruling APC, and the best way PDP can once again entrench themselves in
the hearts of Nigerian is by forming a strong, formidable and
responsible opposition to Buhari's government.

Below are some of my thoughts on how the party can easily and quickly
bounce back ahead of future elections.

First assignment for the PDP in their efforts to rebuild the party is
to elect or appoint a well-experienced publicity secretary who knows
how to play the game with the ruling APC. Even non-PDP members are
unimpressed with the current publicity secretary Olisa Metuh; he is
seen as not competent enough to be an image-maker for the party.

Second assignment: the PDP should set up a committee that would
proffer solutions on how to win future elections with achievable,
realizable and modern manifesto based on the needs and yearnings of
Nigerians.

Third assignment: the party must appeal to all Nigerians to support
them, set up a committee that would pacify and ensure all the members
in other parties the return to the big umbrella for a better future.
Senior members who have suddenly become non-partisan must be reach out
to. People like Olusegun Obasanjo, General Ibrahim Babangida and other
founding members must be brought back to contribute their own ideas to
the success of the party.

Fourth assignment: the party must ensure that it fields credible,
popular, influential, rugged and competent candidates at the
presidency, state governorship, local governments, and other elective
posts in the future elections, those who can deliver on the party's
manifestos and give people the dividends of democracy.

Fifth assignment: the PDP must form a very strong and united front
that would not be easily intimidated, harassed or hounded with state
the security apparatus by the intolerant AP- led government.

Reaching out

For the PDP to survive, it must understand that both old, young and
new members are needed. The attitude of some party leaders that they
can do without some people in the party was one of the major downfalls
of the party. Recall that the problem began when five strong PDP
governors crossed to the nPDP and eventually left for the APC. The
situation could have been salvaged when they were still in the nPDP
had the ex-President Goodluck called for a truce, but ego and pride
deterred him.

After the 2016 National convention where new leaders will be elected,
the PDP needs to start reaching out to all aggrieved members, youth
groups, women groups, other smaller parties and all stakeholders that
can help them build formidable winning structures across every
geopolitical zone in Nigeria.

The PDP must move from analogue use of media to a very efficient and
purposeful use of digital media. The reality is that there are lots of
its members such as Demola Olanrewaju, Adeyanju Adedeji, Anthony
Ehilebo, Opeyemi Azeez Ahmed, Vincent Arogbodo, Chinedu Nwosu, Paul
Utho, Vox Populi, Lekan Durojaye, Zainab Dabo, Reno Omokri, James
King, Olufemi Fani-Kayode, Doyin Okupe, Babatunde Gbadamosi, Kamaldeen
Abdulsalam. and many others who can be of great advantage to the party
in terms of media organization.

As a matter of fact, the PDP leaders at National Working Committee
must come to join social media by themselves and begin to identify
some of the supporting youths in order to attract and train them for
future purposes. The PDP must leverage on social media but not for
hate campaign and malicious propaganda like the APC did during the
last general election.

Somalia Gov't Bans Christmas, New Year Celebrations

The Somalian government has issued a ban on Christmas celebrations in
the Muslim-majority country.

The Sheikh Mohamed Khayrow, director general of Somalia's religious
affairs ministry, said the ban was necessary because of fear Christmas
celebrations could threaten the country's faith .

Director General of Somalia's Ministry of Religious Affairs, Sheikh
Mohamed Khayrow
Speaking to reporters on on Tuesday, the DG said armed security
forces have been ordered to disrupt all celebrations hence 'there
should be no activity at all'.

He said: "All events related to Christmas and New Year celebrations
are contrary to Islamic culture, which could damage the faith of the
Muslim community."

In a plea to the Christian community, Sheikh Nur Barud Gurhan, of the
Supreme Religious Council of Somalia, warned that celebrations could
provoke Al-Shabab "to carry out attacks"

Back in 2013, the country also banned celebrations because the Islamic
calendar that does not recognise January 1 as the beginning of the
year.

Foreign diplomats, aid workers, and soldiers living in the AU compound
in Somalia are however are permitted to mark the day privately.

The ban comes just days after the Sultan of Brunei Hassanal Bolkiah
banned celebrations with the threat of five years in jail if anyone
was found violating the rule.

The leader's decision is informed by the fear that the religious
holiday will affect the faith of his country.

FMC Owerri Crisis: FG Inaugurates 5-man Committee

The federal government has inaugurated a 5-man interim management
committee to look into the‎ crisis that has disrupted activities at
the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, Imo state, with the intention of
restoring lasting peace and services.

The committee has been saddled with 11 terms of reference and is
expected to complete the job within six months of its inauguration and
chat a roadmap towards the achievement of delivering health services
to the people.

This was revealed, Monday, by the minister of health, Prof Isaac
Adewole at the Federal Ministry of Health, Abuja, when he ‎inaugurated
the committee to be supervised by Prof Ndubisi Eke.

He stated that despite all entreaty to end the crisis, the unions
rebuffed federal governments request to give a 3-month moratorium to
work with the management, within which period it would make resources
available to address some of their welfare issues in addition to
improving the lot of the hospital, hence the decision to shut dowm the
hospital.

He said the committee is expected to "take over all administrative,
technical, operational and financial functions of the centre and
restore humane healthcare services, review events leading up to the
industrial unrest and ensure inter/intra professional harmony among
all cadres of staff and take inventory of all properties, assets and
liabilities of the centre."

"Review financial transactions for proper records, conduct personnel
audit of all employees to establish accurate staff disposition,
conduct audit of the operational processes and systems of the centre
and to evaluate the effectiveness of the governance structure, process
and recruitment" among others.

‎It will be recalled that activities were brought to a halt at the
center for the past eight months due to severe unrest which was
carried out by union members who have continued to insist that the
medical director, Dr Angela Uwakwem must be sacked on account of
high-handedness and other allegations levelled against her.

However, the fact-finding committee that investigated the allegations
against the medical director had since submitted its report and had
exonerated her and the contents of the report was brought to the
public domain.

Hajj Stampede: 43 Nigerians Still Missing—Report

Weeks after the conclusion of the 2015 Hajj exercise and the attendant
tragedy that occurred during a stampede in Mina, Saudi Arabia, it has
emerged that 43 Nigerians are still missing.

This was contained in a report submitted, yesterday, to the Secretary
to the Government of the Federation, David Babachir Lawal, by the
committee on the 2015 Hajj exercise.
A synopsis of the report was contained in a statement issued last
night in Abuja by the Director of Press in the Office of the Secretary
to the Government of the Federation, Bolaji Adebiyi.
Chairman of the committee, Abdullahi Mohammed, described the exercise
as the most eventful in the history of hajj operations in Nigeria with
pilgrims witnessing two tragic events, the crane incident at the Grand
Mosque in Makkah on September 11 and the stampede in Mina on September
24.

His report indicated that Nigeria recorded a total of 280 deaths from
both events, while 43 are considered missing as their status is yet to
be ascertained.
A total of 75,081 Nigerian pilgrims participated in the 2015 hajj exercise.

According to him, the report submitted contains observations and
recommendations that will ensure seamless exercises in the future.

Receiving the report, Lawal commended the chairman and the entire
board of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria for their performance
in Saudi Arabia, especially, during the tragedies at the hajj.

He said he was particularly impressed with the conduct of the chairman
in providing the government and indeed, the general public, adequate
and incontrovertible information throughout the crisis. He assured
the commission that the report will receive the attention of the
government.

Biafra: FG Slams Fresh 6-count Charge Against Kanu, 2 Others

The Federal Government has filed a fresh six-count charge of treason
and managing the affairs of 'an unlawful society,' against the
embattled leader of Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mr. Nnamdi
Kanu.

Kanu was charged before the Federal High Court, Abuja alongside two
others, Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi.

MASSOB, IPOB accuse Obiano

Meanwhile, Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of
Biafra, MASSOB, and Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, which were the
arrow-heads of the agitation for the release of their detained leader
and Director, Radio Biafra, Nnamadi Kanu, have accused Governor Willie
Obiano of Anambra State of alleged collusion with security operatives
to kill, maim its members, who were last week, jubilating over the
bail granted their leader by a Federal High Court, Abuja.

Also, pro-Biafra agitators in Delta State, yesterday, declared support
for the leader of the Biafra Independence Movement, BIM, Chief Ralph
Uwazuruike, describing him as a non violent messiah.

In the fresh charge, the trio were accused of committing treasonable
felony, an offence punishable under Section 41(C) of the Criminal Code
Act, CAP C38 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria.

Meanwhile, when the matter came up before Justice Mohammed, yesterday,
neither the prosecuting counsel nor the accused persons were present
in court.

However, Mr. Ifeanyi Ejiofor announced appearance for the defendants,
even as he queried the seriousness of the Federal Government to
prosecute the matter.
Ejiofor insisted that the fresh charge was nothing but a ploy by the
government to ensure the continued detention of the accused persons,
especially Kanu, who was earlier granted bail by the same high court.

Nevertheless, Justice Mohammed, explained that though the matter was
slated in the court's cause-list for mention, yesterday, he said it
was obvious that the prosecution was not notified.

The judge therefore, adjourned the case, saying a date for the
arraignment of the accused persons would be communicated to all the
parties.

Meanwhile, there was heavy police presence around the court premises yesterday.

Fresh charge

Nnamdi-Kanu in court
In the fresh charge, FG, alleged that the three accused persons were
the ones managing the affairs of "an unlawful society," the IPOB.

The charge read, "That you, Nnamdi Kanu and other unknown persons, now
at large, in London, United Kingdom, between 2014 and September, 2015,
with intention to levy war against Nigeria in order to force the
President to change his measures of being the President of the
Federation, Head of State and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces
of the Federation as defined in Section 3 of the Constitution of the
Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) by doing an act to wit:
Broadcast on Radio Biafra your preparations for the states in the
South- East geo-political zone, South-South geo-political zone, the
Igala Community of Kogi State and the Idoma/Igede Community of Benue
State to secede from the Federal Republic of Nigeria and form
themselves into a Republic of Biafra, and thereby committed an offence
punish- able under Section 41(C) of the Criminal Code Act, CAP C38
Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004."

It will be recalled that Justice Ademola Adeniyi of the same high
court had on December 17, ordered the "unconditional" release of the
IPOB leader, Kanu, from the custody of the Department of State
Service, DSS.

Kanu who is also the Director of Radio Biafra and Television, was on
October 17, arrested in Lagos by security operatives, shortly after he
arrived Nigeria from his base in the United Kingdom.

Pro-Biafra agitators in Delta State in a communique, meanwhile, at the
end of the enlarged meeting of BIM, in Asaba, the state capital, who
are from lgbo speaking axis, condemned violent approach to the
agitation.

Judge Withdraws From Pro-Biafra Leader’s Trial

Justice Ahmed Mohammed of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday
withdrew from the trial of pro-Biafra leader and founder of Biafra
Radio, Nnamdi Kanu.

This followed an objection by Kanu, who spoke from the dock where he
stood along with his two co-defendants, ‎saying that he lacked
confidence of getting justice from the trial conducted by the judge.

Two other persons charged along with Kanu are ‎Benjamin Madubugwu and
David Nwawuisi.

The judge upheld Kanu's objection saying that it was within his right
to object to being tried before a judge or any court in which he had
no confidence.

The arraignment of the accused persons scheduled for Wednesday was
stalled, as the judge ruled that he would return the case file to the
Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Ibrahim Auta, "for
further action."

The Director of Public Prosecution, Mr. Mohammed Diri, who filed fresh
six counts including treasonable felony against Kanu and two others on
Friday, asked the judge to dismiss Kanu's objection citing section
396(2) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015.

The provision of the law only allows a defendant to only raise an
objection to the competence of the charges preferred against him‎
after he or she has taken his plea provided that his objection would
be considered along with the substantive case.

But Justice Mohammed in dismissing the DPP's objection held that the
type of objection raised by Kanu had nothing to do with the one
contemplated under section 396 of the ACJ Act.

Kanu was led away by men of the Department of State Service after the
Wednesday's proceedings.

The fresh case against Kanu was filed on Friday, barely 24 hours after
another judge of the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court, Justice
Adeniyi Ademola ordered Kanu's unconditional release from the custody
of the Department of State Service.

Justice Ademola ordered the DSS to release Kanu unconditionally since
there was no pending charges against him about two months after his
detention.

But instead of releasing him, the Federal Government filed fresh
charges against him on Friday.

Read The 20 Predictions Made By Gov. Fayose That Will Happen In Nigeria In 2016

Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, yesterday led clergymen in
the state in prayer, during the prayer session which held at the
government office in Ado Ekiti, the governor made some prophesies
about what will happen in Nigeria in 2016. Here are the prophesies…

• Workers strike: There will be so much industrial unrest, especially
in the first quarter of the year.
• Subsidy: There will be removal of fuel subsidy and petrol will sell
over and above N100/litre, leaving the masses in more serious
hardship. Product will not be available and long queue in petrol
stations will persist throughout the first quarter of 2016 and beyond.
• Electricity: Power generation will drop to the lowest ebb. Still,
federal government will increase tariff in 2016.
• Unemployment: Millions of jobs will be lost in 2016 as against the
three million jobs promised by the APC yearly. Most states and federal
government will retrench workers as evident in the over 2,000 federal
university workers already sacked.
• Economic policy: Most private owned middle-class businesses will
fold up because of bad economic policies of the Buhari-led government.
• Devaluation: The naira will continue to have a free fall which will
take it to as low as N320 to one dollar.
• Economy: The Buhari-led federal government will have no solution to
country's economic problems.
• Security: Boko Haram will keep spreading and the Shiite Muslims will
get more emboldened.
• Human rights: Penchant for dictatorship will rise with rampant human
rights abuses and disobedience to court orders.
• Anti-corruption: Insincerity in the fight against corruption will
continue and the fight will not only be selective and political, but
targeted more at southerners.
• Elections: Attempt to forcefully control any of the South-south
states of Akwa Ibom, Rivers and Bayelsa by the APC will lead to
unprecedented deaths.
• Economy: Crude oil price will fall to below and about $30 per barrel.
• Anti-press laws: The masses, especially men of the media profession
will rise against the federal government's plot to deny Nigerians of
their rights to freedom of expression. There will wide, condemnations
by Nigerians and the International community against President
Buhari's human rights abuses and disobedience to court orders.
• Polity: Renewed efforts will be made to remove Senator Bukola Saraki
as the Senate President; this will not only fail, but will heat the
polity.
• Hardships: Nigerians will experience more hardships. The president
himself attested to this (The SUN Newspaper Tuesday, December 15,
2015). This obviously negates the change Nigerians voted for.
• Elections: Plot by the APC to take control of at least one
South-south state will lead to death of many people. Particularly,
rerun elections in Rivers and Akwa-Ibom States will cause many deaths.
• Corruption: Halliburton scam may be revisited in 2016.
• Kogi State: Court will sack governor-elect, Yahaya Bello. Bayelsa
State: Governor Seriake Dickson will win the supplementary
election.Taraba State: Governor Darius Ishaku will be victorious at
the court.

• Politics: There will be subtle political alignment and realignment
before the end of the year ahead of 2019 elections.
Urging the men of God to pray fervently for the state and country to
recover from the present economic doldrums, Fayose said: "You know
when the economy is sick, the church is sick as well.
"I received the worst allocation this December. The state got N1.3
billion, while we need N2.6billion to pay salaries. So, I urge you to
continue to pray for the country's quick economic revival.
"Though, not that I have not noticed some financial recklessness
perpetrated in the past, but I promised not to probe because it
constitutes a distraction.

FIFA Bans Blatter, Platini For Eight Years

A FIFA ethics tribunal on Monday banned Sepp Blatter and Michel
Platini for eight years saying they had abused their positions over a
2 million Swiss francs payment made to Platini.

The sentence against the two most powerful men in football stunningly
highlighted the troubles faced by the world's most popular sport where
billions of dollars have been invested in recent years.

Blatter, 79, and Platini, 60, were "immediately" banned from all
football activity. Blatter's career is now almost certainly over while
Platini's hopes of taking over FIFA are all but finished.

Blatter, FIFA's president since 1998, was fined 50,000 Swiss francs
($50,000/46,300 euros) while Platini, the head of UEFA, Europe's
governing body and a FIFA vice president, was fined 80,000 Swiss
francs.
Blatter told a press conference he would challenge the sentence at a
FIFA appeal committee, at the Court of Arbitration for Sport and
before Swiss civil courts.

Blatter said he had been "betrayed" by FIFA investigators and had been
treated like a "punching ball".

He condemned the FIFA court for not accepting his explanations.
"Something that is not true cannot be proven," he said, declaring that
he would be "combative".

A statement by the FIFA tribunal said Blatter and Platini were guilty
of "abusive execution" of their powers with the two million Swiss
franc payment that Blatter authorised for Platini in 2011. They said
it was for work as a consultant carried out between 1999 and 2002.

While the FIFA court dropped corruption charges against both men, it
said both were guilty of a conflict of interests.
It said there was "no legal basis" for the payment in a written
agreement between the two officials in August 1999.

"Neither in his written statement nor in his personal hearing was Mr
Blatter able to demonstrate another legal basis for this payment. His
assertion of an oral agreement was determined as not convincing and
was rejected by the chamber."

The court said "Mr Blatter's actions did not show commitment to an
ethical attitude, failing to respect all applicable laws and
regulations as well as FIFA's regulatory framework to the extent
applicable to him and demonstrating an abusive execution of his
position as President of FIFA".

Platini was also found to be in "a conflict of interest".
The judgement was even more damning of the French football legend than
for Blatter.

"Mr Platini failed to act with complete credibility and integrity,
showing unawareness of the importance of his duties and concomitant
obligations and responsibilities.

"His actions did not show commitment to an ethical attitude, failing
to respect all applicable laws and regulations as well as FIFA's
regulatory framework."

– Credibility gap –

The court said Platini was also guilty of "demonstrating an abusive
execution of his position as vice-president of FIFA".

Blatter and Platini were provisionally suspended in October after
Swiss prosecutors started a criminal investigation into the 2011 cash
transfer.
Blatter is under criminal investigation and Platini is being treated
as between a suspect and a witness.

Both strongly deny any wrongdoing. Blatter spent eight hours before a
FIFA court last Thursday while Platini boycotted his hearing saying he
had been "condemned" in advance.

At the time of the 2011 payment, Blatter was campaigning for a fourth
term as FIFA president. Platini later supported his former mentor but
has since turned against him.

Blatter and Platini can challenge any ban at a FIFA appeal tribunal,
the Court of Arbitration for Sport, and even in a Swiss civil court.

Blatter would be fighting for his reputation. For Platini, the ban
rules him out of the FIFA election to be held on February 26.
The deadline for candidates to be registered and pass an integrity
check is January 26.

With FIFA's reputation in tatters after the arrest of several top
officials, Blatter announced four days after winning re-election to a
fifth term in May that he would stand down and call a new election.

Celebrate Christmas Publicly And Face Up To Five Years In Jail -- President Warns

The ruler of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah has banned the public
celebration of Christmas in his country, Daily Mail reports.

The wealthy Sultan recently warned residents of the tiny nation that
failure to adhere to the rules will attract up to five years in jail.

The report states that the leader's decision is informed by the fear
that the religious holiday will affect the faith of his country.

The rule also states that Muslims caught celebrating Christmas, and
non-Muslims who are discovered organising celebrations, could face the
lengthy prison sentence.

While non-Muslims are allowed to celebrate the holiday within their
own communities, they are mandated not to disclose their plans to the
nation's Muslims – which make up 65 per cent of the nation's
population.

The nation has about 20 per cent non-Muslims, including substantial
Buddhist and Christian communities.

A statement by the country's Ministry of Religious Affairs read:
"These enforcement measures are…intended to control the act of
celebrating Christmas excessively and openly, which could damage the
aqidah (beliefs) of the Muslim community."

Before now, Brunei prohibits propagating religion other than Islam to
a Muslim, and breaking this is a violation of the penal code of the
state's laws.

Also banned in the country is put putting up Christmas trees, singing
religious songs and sending Christmas greetings.

The report quoted the Imams in the Borneo Bulletin saying: "Some may
think that it is a frivolous matter and should not be brought up as an
issue. But as Muslims, we must keep it [following other religions'
celebrations] away as it could affect our Islamic faith."

Meanwhile, some Burnei residents seem to have defiedthe order as they
have been celebrating Christmas and uploading pictures to social media
as part of a #MyTreedom campaign that celebrates religious freedom.

Nnamdi Kanu's Detention: MASSOB Vows To Continue Protests If…

Tension is building up in the South-East and parts of South-South
geopolitical zones following the continued detention of the leader of
Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, and Director Radio Biafra, Nnamdi
Kanu, who was, last Wednesday, discharged and acquitted by a
Magistrate's Court in Abuja of the treason preferred on him by the
Department of State Security Services, DSS.

The Indigenous People of Biafra on a Peaceful Protest over the Arrest
of the Director of Radio Biafra yesterday along Ikwerre road in Port
Harcourt, Rivers State.

It will be recalled that Justice Ademola Adeniyi of a Federal High
Court, also in Abuja, had, last Thursday, ordered Kanu's immediate
release from DSS detention.
Nnamdi was arrested on October 17, by DSS operatives, shortly after he
arrived Nigeria from his base in the United Kingdom, which prompted
over one month protests after he was arraigned secretly at Wuse 2
Magistrate's Court presided over by Justice Shuiabu, who granted him
bail on October 19.

Meanwhile, the youth wing of Ohanaeze Ndigbo had warned that the
continued detention of the leader Nnamdi Kanu by the DDS, against
court order, could spell doom for Nigeria.

The youth group under the banner of Ohanaeze Youth Council, OYC,
expressed shock that four days after the Federal High Court, Abuja
gave ordered Kanu's unconditional release, the DSS had continued to
hold him.

Similarly, reactions have continued to trail last Thursday's shooting
and killing of five members of IPOB by the Joint Task Force,
compromising Army and Navy stationed at the Bridge-head area of the
commercial city of Onitsha, Anambra State, who were jubilating the
court order for the release of Kanu.

Among those who had so far reacted to the incident include the leader
of Biafra Independence Movement, BIM, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike; the
Ogirishi of Igboland, Chief Rommy Ezeonwuka, and other human rights
groups.

Nerves frayed as Kanu's not released

The leader of Movement for the Actualization of the State of Biafra,
MASSOB, Uchenna Madu, has accused the DSS of deliberately continuing
to detain Nnamdi Kanu against two court rulings ordering the security
agency to release their leader unconditionally.

"The continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu by DSS after both Magistrate,
Federal High courts have discharged and acquitted him of all the
frivolous charges against him shows that Nigerian judiciary is not
independent. The independency of the three arms of government is a
complete sham, which portrays Nigeria as an undemocratic state.

"It is a sign of frustration on Nigeria because of Nnamdi Kanu,
agitators for Biafra represents the very truth Nigeria knows but
always avoids to identify with it. I know Nnamdi Kanu. He is a real
Biafran, who can never succumb to intimidation, deviate or compromise.

"His illegal detention will worsen the already battered image of
Nigeria. MAASOB will never relent in identifying with Nnamdi Kanu. We
shall continue to press for his release with every legitimate action
supported, backed by internationally recongised law, decrees and
charters. MASSOB must maintain our non-violent stance, although we
have found out that the DSS wants to re-arraign him on fresh
trumped-up charges which we will resist," MASSOB leader warned.

Kanu's detention may mar Nigeria —Ohanaeze

The Youth Wing of Ohanaeze Ndigbo in a statement by its National
President of OYC, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, condemned the attitude of
the DSS over the detained Biafra activist.

"Nigeria is sitting on tenterhook; the looming danger of renewed
protests by Kanu's followers, sympathisers and Biafra agitators is
capable of consuming Nigeria and should be avoided. For us, Ohanaeze
Youth Council, we are pleading with the Federal Government to, as a
matter of sacrifice for the unity of Nigeria, release Nnamdi Kanu.

Bayelsa Commissioner Abducted By Gunmen

BARELY twenty-four hours after the sister of the Bayelsa state
Governor, Seriake Dickson, was kidnapped, suspected kidnappers on
Sunday struck in Ogbia Local Government Area abducting the serving
Commissioner for Local Government, Mrs. Sarafina Otazi.
Confirming the abduction of the state government official, a nephew of
the victim, Mr. Patrick Oba, said she was kidnapped at gunpoint in
Otuoke on her way to Ewoi Community in Ogbia Local Government Area for
funeral.

According to the family source, the kidnappers reportedly whisked away
the victim who was in company of two other ladies when they attacked
and took away her car keys apparently to frustrate attempts at
reporting the crime.

It was also gathered that the two female occupants of the car and the
driver were unharmed by the gunmen who sped off to an unknown
destination in their own vehicle.

Otazi is a one-time acting chairperson of Ogbia Council area and also
a former Commissioner for Women Affairs in the state.
Spokesperson of the Bayelsa state Police Command, Asinim Butswatt,
who confirmed the incident, said he was yet to get details as at
press time.

Barcelona Wins World Club Championship

Barcelona are the 2015 World Champions, defeating River Plate 3-0 on
Sunday night in Japan.

Luis Enrique's men cruised to victory in the final of FIFA Club World
Cup competition, adding the gong to their La Liga, Copa Del Rey,
Champions League and Uefa Super Cup successes.

It was a spectacle by the 'MSN' trio. Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez
scored with big contributions from Neymar, and after a tough first
half.

Lionel Messi had opened the scoring in the 35th minute with a sublime
strike to help the champions' confidence against a determined River
Plate team.

Dani Alves found Neymar in the box, and the Brazilian passed the ball
to Messi, who got away with a little handball and finally found the
opening goal with his left foot.

Luis Suarez netted a superb second half double to help the Spanish
giants emerge as the world's best football club in 2015.

River Platehad come into the second half seeking an equalizer that
seemed highly possible but they left gaps which Barça took advantage
of.

Less than five minutes in, Sergio Busquets stole a ball and ignited a
counter-attack with a beautiful through ball to Luis Suárez, who
calmly finished to score the second goal.

In the 68th minute, Neymar's beautiful cross found Suárez in the box,
and the Uruguayan headed away from the keeper to get the third.

Barcelona have now equaled the record of Egypt's Ahly, reaching the
20th international title after winning the Club World Cup title.

Aero Airlines Explains Why Passengers Disembarked Using Ladder

Nigeria's oldest carrier: Aero Contractors has explained why it
resorted to the use of ladder in disembarking passengers at the Bauchi
Airport, after it was said to have had problems with unserviceable
equipment by the airport management in disembarking about 34
passengers flown in from the Abuja Airport.

The airline however pointed out that as at the time the 34 passengers
were boarding the chartered flight at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International
Airport, the air stairs was functional.

Explaining what transpired in a statement issued yesterday by its
media consultant, SY & T, Aero Contractors said: "A special charter
flight operated by Aero to Bauchi had problems with unserviceable
equipment by the airport management in disembarking about 34
passengers from Abuja. Consequently against the airline's wish and
operation safety guideline, the passengers used a ladder to
disembark."
"Aero wishes to state that it took adequate and safety measures for
this operation, including the airport's ground staff crew to handle
the air stairs equipment in Bauchi, unfortunately it became
unserviceable at the point of disembarkation.

"Although the airline crew tried to calm down the passengers to wait
while the equipment was being fixed, the passengers insisted on their
own volition to disembark against all safety protocol of the airline,"
Aero Airlines said in the statement.

Again DSS Shuns court Order, Fails To Release Kanu.

For the umpteenth time, the Department of State Security (DSS) has
scoffed at a valid court order by refusing to release the Director of
Radio Biafra and leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB),
Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, just as it did with that of the magistrate court,
Abuja about two months ago that sparked off demonstrations nationally
and internationally, which also left many people dead and others
wounded.

In what appears a show of its determination to do things its own way,
regarding its relationship with court orders, the agency on Friday,
practically sniggered at the orders of Justice Adeniyi Ademola of the
Federal High Court, Abuja, that the IPOB leader be released
unconditionally.

Whirlwindnews.com, had reported exclusively this morning that Kanu was
not able to regain freedom after the court pronouncement on Thursday,
because his lawyers were not able to secure the enrolment order from
the court.

But armed with the document, they were able to approach the DSS today,
only for the agency to rebuff the order on the ground that the
Director General was not in the office and practically ordered the
legal team out of their Abuja office.

"This morning, the legal team was able to get the enrolment paper
signed and with a bailiff, they went to the office of the DSS this,
and successfully served them. But instead of releasing Kanu, they were
told to go on the ground that the DG who would sign and order his
release was not in the office. They were able to ease the team out of
their office, telling the lawyers to go that they would be contacted
immediately the DG returns. That is the latest, a source told
Whirlwindnews.com, a few minutes ago.

The palpably disturbed source, argued that the implication of the
development was that Kanu would likely spend the weekend with the DSS.
"You know today is gone. What it means is that they may have to wait
till Monday, the next working day. I don't know why this is happening
in this country. Why should these people choose to operate as if there
is no law in this country? For how long will they continue with this?
Is there an agenda they have that they don't want the people of this
country to know?

"Everybody had thought that they would use this court process to cool
the entire polity. About seven people were killed yesterday for
celebrating the announcement that Kanu has been released. Is it that
they want these people to return to the street now that it appears
that they are not releasing him. Recall that the magistrate court had
earlier released him and they refused to allow him go only to rush to
the Federal High Court, which finding no prima facae case against him,
released him unconditionally. What are they then playing at? This is
the question Nigerians and the international community must now begin
to ask, before things get out of hands," he added.

Chelsea Cruise Past Sunderland As Norwich Stun United

Chelsea's new interim manager, Guus Hiddink, watched from the stands
as his team beat Sunderland 3-1 on Saturday, while Norwich City won at
Manchester United.

Appointed hours before kick-off in place of the sacked Jose Mourinho,
Hiddink was in the stands at a discontented Stamford Bridge as Chelsea
prevailed through goals from Branislav Ivanovic, Pedro Rodriguez and
Oscar.

The match unfurled amid tension, as Chelsea's fans took out their
anger over Mourinho's dismissal on their own players, and there was
also a bilious atmosphere at Old Trafford, where Norwich won 2-1.

It was United's third straight defeat in all competitions, sending
them out of the top four, and saw Van Gaal assailed with boos from the
home supporters.

A world away from the managerial intrigue, Claudio Ranieri, the former
Chelsea manager, saw his Leicester City side win 3-2 at Everton to
guarantee that they will top the table on Christmas Day.

Hiddink, 69, has returned to Chelsea in the hope of pulling off a
salvage job similar to the one he masterminded in 2009, when he led
the club to FA Cup glory after being parachuted in by owner Roman
Abramovich.

With first-team coach Steve Holland taking charge of the team, Hiddink
sat alongside Abramovich and former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba as
the bedraggled champions began life without Mourinho.

Pro-Mourinho banners were visible around the ground — one bearing the
message "You let Jose down, you let us down" — and his name was
chanted by the home supporters right from kick-off.

Despite the hostility from their own fans, Chelsea made a storming
start, Ivanovic heading in Willian's corner in the fifth minute and
Pedro slamming home from Willian's cross eight minutes later.

Chelsea Appoint Hiddink As Interim Manager

Two days after Chelsea sacked Jose Mourinho, the Blues have confirmed
that Guus Hiddink will take over as manager until the end of the
season.

The 69-year-old also managed the Blues on a temporary basis for the
final three months of the 2008-2009 campaign.

The Dutchman left his role as Netherlands Manager during their
unsuccessful European qualifying campaign.

Chelsea sacked Mourinho seven months after he led them to the Premier
League title.

The 52-year-old Portuguese had been in his second spell at the club as
the Blues are currently 16th on the EPL table.

Chelsea finished eight points clear last season and also won the
League Cup, but have endured a terrible start to their defence, losing
nine of their 16 league games so far.

Sister Of Governor Dickson Kidnapped

Nancy Keme Dickson, the younger sister to the Bayelsa State's
Governor, Mr. Seriake Dickson has been kidnapped.

A witness said the 26 year-old lady kidnapped at her shop on Okaka
Road, Yenagoa, the state capital at about 2:50pm by the abductors who
drove a Lexus SUV.

The belief was that the abductors may have carried out surveillance on
her movements before they struck.

Efforts by the state's security outfit, Operation Door Akpo to comb
strategic points in the city of Yenagoa by adopting stop and search,
did not yield the desired result.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Asinim Butswat, confirmed
the abduction of Nancy.

"On the 19 December, 2015, at about 1450hrs, four unknown gunmen in an
ash coloured Lexus Jeep, trailed one Nancy Keme Dickinson, 26 yrs, to
her shop at Okaka road, Yenagoa, and abducted her and her sales girl
to an unknown destination.

" The Command immediately embarked on a Stop and Search/Cordon
Operations in a bid to rescue the victims and apprehend the
perpetrators. Efforts have been intensified to arrest the abductors.
Investigation is ongoing," the police said in a statement.

Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State.

POne of the victims was identified as Reverend Father Franklyn Odiaka,
who is the Parish Priest of Catholic Church of Assumption (Zappa

It was gathered that the unsuspecting clergymen were returning from a
ceremony in honor of the Bishop of Issele-Uku Diocese, Most Rev. (Dr.)
Michael Elue, when they were whisked away by the gunmen.

into the church and remove undisclosed amount of money from the parish
treasury.

The State Public Relations Officer of the Delta State Police Command,
DSP Celestina Kalu, who confirmed the kidnap of the Catholic Priests
said information about the situation was still sketchy.

He, however expressed confidence that the hoodlums would be apprehended.

10 Killed As IPOB Celebrates Kanu’s Release

No fewer than 10 members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)
were killed on Thursday during jubilations that erupted in Onitsha,
Anambra State after a federal high court sitting Abuja ordered
unconditional release of the director of Radio Biafra and leader of
the group, Nnamdi Kanu from the custody of Department of State
Security Services. Kanu had been in custody since October 14, 2015
when he was arrested by operatives of DSS in Lagos Justice Adeniyi
Ademola gave the order for Kanu's release while ruling on the bail
application filed by the applicant's counsel, Mr. Vincent Egechukwu
Obetta. The applicant had also challenged the federal high court order
dated November 11, 2015 that permitted his detention in custody for 90
days.

Ademola said that the released of Kanu unconditionally was based "on
the fact that there is no criminal charge against him in any court in
the country." Reacting shortly after his son was ordered to be
released, Nnamdi Kanu's father who is the traditional ruler of
Afaraukwu autonomous community in Umuahia North, Abia State, Eze
Israel Kanu thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for heeding the call to
release his son, just as Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC) has commended
President Muhammadu Buhari, for heeding the pleas of Ndigbo and other
progressive Nigerians.

The 10 members of the group were killed, according to eyewitnesses, by
soldiers deployed to Onitsha in the wake of last month's IPOB protest
over the detention of Kanu. No fewer than 30 others were also reported
to have sustained various degrees of injury during Thursday's
incident. The incident, our correspondent gathered caused panic among
motorists and commuters along the busy Niger Bridge area, Enugu/
Onitsha Expressway. It was gathered that supporters of IPOB who on
hearing about court's favourable verdict on Kanu converged at the
statue of the late Biafran leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu in
large procession.

An eyewitness, Mr. Festus Uyanna, a timber trader at Bridge-Head
Market, Onitsha, told our correspondent that trouble started when the
jubilating IPOB members were asked to stop their march towards the
Niger Bridge, but the group bluntly refused and continued to advance
towards the bridge which has been notorious since the protest for
Kanu's release commenced. According to the witness, it was at this
juncture, when the soldiers started shooting sporadically, probably to
scare the crowd away, that the ten IPOB members were shot dead. The
jubilation came to an abrupt end as members of the scattered and ran
for safety. Corpses littered the road, while motorists and commuters
who could not bear the heavy gunshots jumped out of their vehicles and
ran for safety.

However, courageous ones among the group's members threw pebbles at
the rampaging soldiers who retaliated by continuous shooting as if in
an enemy territory. Shop owners and artisans transacting business in
the area all shut their businesses as early as 1pm for fear of any
eventuality. The President General, Bridge-Head Markets Association,
Mr. Sunday Obinze whose domain has been a war theatre could not talk
to the press as he was said to be in a meeting.

Earlier at the federal high court in Abuja, Justice Ademola had set
aside Kanu's detention order. He also ruled that the "detention of
Kanu for more than two months without any charge is contrary to the
provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999
(as amended)." Justice Ademola further ruled that the provisions of
Administration of Criminal Justice Act and the Constitution of Federal
Republic of Nigeria were explicit on the issue of bail and freedom of
the citizens.

He reasoned that it was either the DSS and federal government were not
prepared or lacked enough materials or were yet to make up their minds
to prosecute the applicant. Nnamdi's father, Eze Israel Kanu who
reacted in Umuahia also appreciated the support of Nigerians who stood
by them during the trying period. He advised MASSOB, IPOB and other
pro-Biafra agitators to be law abiding and pursue the Biafra project
without confrontation. Eze Kanu however urged President Buhari to let
Igbo be by giving the people independent Biafra.

In their reaction, the National President of OYC, Maxi Okechukwu
Isiguzoro, and Secretary, Nnabuike Okwu, in a press statement issued
on Thursday in Umuahia said the release of Kanu would go a long way in
dousing the tension in the polity. According to them, Kanu's final
release from detention will also restore the confidence of Ndigbo in
Buhari's administration even as it would also end the protests by
Biafra agitators which had enveloped most cities in the defunct
Eastern region.

Ohanaeze, therefore, appealed to all pro- Biafra groups to reciprocate
the federal government's gesture by discontinuing with further
protests " for the sake of peace and in the overall interest of the
people," just as it called on the federal government to quickly
address all injustices against Ndigbo which it said were the causes of
the renewed agitation for Biafra in the first place.

Rivers Speaker Resigns After Passing Wike’s Budget

The Speaker of Rivers House, Ikunyi Owaji-Ibani, representing Andoni
Constituency resign a moment ago shortly after presiding over the 2016
budget presentation by Governor Nyesom Wike at about 5:30pm today.

The Speaker made the surprise announcement after presiding over the
hurried presentation of the 2016 citing "personal reasons".
Immediately after the resignation of Hon. Ikuinyi Owaji Igbanyi as the
Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, a new Speaker stepped
in with members of the Assembly unanimously endorsing Daboturidima
Adams, the member representing Okrika State Constituency as the new
Speaker.
Hon. Adams represents Okrika State Constituency where Mrs Patience
Jonathan, the Wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan hails from.

It is not clear the remote reasons for the former Speaker's
resignation because he represents Andoni where Uche Secondus, the
acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, hails.

Speculations are rife that the Speaker may have been eased out to

Australia National Team Congratulate Hiddink On Chelsea Appointment

The new manager of the Blues appears to have been revealed, though not
in the way most would have imagined, as the Dutchman's old team wished
him luck at Stamford Bridge.
Australia's national football team website has congratulated former
coach Guus Hiddink on his appointment as Jose Mourinho's successor at
Chelsea, though no official confirmation has yet been released by the
Premier League club.

Mourinho was sacked by the Blues on Thursday after a string of poor
results, bad press and in-house bust-ups, leaving fans speculating as
to who would take over.

Former Chelsea striker Mateja Kezman claimed that the Dutchman had
revealed to him he would take over, but the Socceroos website took the
speculation to a new level after publishing their own announcement and
sharing their congratulations on Twitter.

Should Hiddink be appointed, the 69-year-old will have unenviable task
of lifting the Premier League champions - currently only a single
point above the relegation zone - back up the table.

As things stand, however, neither Chelsea nor the coach have commented
since Mourinho's dismissal on Thursday.

Hiddink has already had one stint in charge of the Blues, having taken
over at Stamford Bridge after Brazilian coach Luiz Felipe Scolari was
sacked in 2009; he enjoyed a 73 per cent win rate and lifted the FA
Cup.

MTN Drags NCC To Court Over $3.9bn Fine In Nigeria, Pays For Licences In Ghana, Ivory Coast

MTN Group is ready to stand up to the Nigerian Communications
Commission (NCC) and will challenge the regulator's powers to impose a
$3.9 billion fine on its Nigerian subsidiary. The telecommunications
company will file a case against the regulator before a Federal High
Court in Lagos. As it disclosed this, the company also said it had
paid 75 billion CFA francs ($124 million) to extend its operating
license in Ivory Coast and would pay $67.5 million in Ghana to buy a
15-year radio frequency spectrum for high-speed networks.

NCC had slammed an initial $5.2 billion fine on MTN for failing to
meet a deadline to disconnect 5.1 million unregistered subscribers.
The fine was later cut by 25 percent to $3.9 billion and a deadline of
Dec. 31 was given for the payment. But believes "there are valid
grounds upon which to challenge the fine," and will, therefore, "seek
the appropriate reliefs from court".

While that is ongoing, MTN Chairman Phuthuma Nhleko is leading
negotiations with the NCC to try and ensure an amicable resolution.

MTN's $196 million total payment for operating licences in Ghana and
Ivory Coast shows the telco remains keen about West Africa despite the
troubles it faces in Nigeria, its largest market. The penalty the
company faces in Nigeria has made the company lose 28 percent of its
value. The reduced fine is over 30 percent of its 2014 group revenue
and 95 percent of MTN Nigeria's revenue in the same year. It will be
hard to pay such fine, amid slowing growth. But Nigeria remains a very
important market to MTN. The company paid $94.2 million to renew its
operating licence in the country till 2021.
