Former Bayelsa Governor, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha Is Dead

Former Bayelsa Governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha is dead.

The 62-year-old reportedly died of cardiac arrest at the University of
Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, after slipping into coma two days ago
and was placed on life support.

The Bayelsa State Commissioner for Information, Esueme Dan-Kikili
confirmed the former governor's death to Channels Television.
According to him, the death of the former governor was a great loss to
the Ijaw ethnic group.

Alamieyeseigha's death is coming days after reports that the British
Government was determined to resurrect an outstanding case of money
laundering against the former governor and had requested for his
extradition to London, hit the media.

He was detained in London on charges of money laundering in September
2005. At the time of his arrest, Metropolitan police found about £1m
in cash in his London home and a total of £1.8m in cash and bank
accounts. He has been found to own real estate in London worth an
alleged £10 million.

He was facing money laundering charges in the UK when he jumped bail
in December 2005 and returned to Nigeria and has since then refused to
answer summons for trial to continue. Despite the charges against him
in the UK, he was granted presidential pardon by his political godson,
Goodluck Jonathan when the latter was president.

Alamieyeseigha was born 16 November 1952. He would have turned 63 next month.

Tinubu Under Security Watch Over Alleged Plot Against Buhari

Security agencies have launched a surveillance ring around a leader
of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed
Tinubu and others, including some members of the National Assembly,
over an alleged plot against President Muhammadu Buhari.

The plot, which presidency sources said is not unconnected to the
decision of President Buhari to dump several nominees submitted by
some party leaders and political godfathers for ministerial
appointments, has led to a move to mend fences between the two major
contending forces in the Senate.

Intelligence reports had revealed that some state governors, party
leaders and political godfathers, whose nominees were dumped by the
President for his preferred candidates, have begun to "unleash their
goons in a well coordinated media campaigns and groups' protests
against Mr President's choice of ministerial nominees"

Saturday Sun gathered that of particular interest to some
intelligence agencies keeping a tab on the plot "is the decision of an
APC leader in the South-West to jet out of the country the moment he
realised that he could not push through his ministerial nominees, only
to be coordinating attacks against the President from his base outside
the country."

A top official in one of the nation's intelligence agencies leading
investigations into the alleged plot told Saturday Sun on condition of
anonymity, "because the investigation is still at the preliminary
stage", that "a particular political godfather who has been
spearheading the campaign to remove the Senate President, Dr Bukola
Saraki has suddenly turned round to be reaching out to Senators in his
(Saraki's) camp to mend fences so as to form a joint force to launch
an attack against the President."

"We are following all of these clues and leads including promises by
the same person to help crush the criminal charges against a leading
Senator. This brand of politics will in no way help the ruling party
and the nation. One man must not have his way in all cases and in
every arrangement", the source added.

Though the source did not specifically mention Tinubu in the chat, the
APC chieftain, however, fits into all the descriptions. It was also
gathered that the presidency is already bracing up for the emerging
development.

It was not clear as at press time whether the Saraki camp will accept
the peace deal being offered by the party leader and support the
alleged plot against the President coming at a time when the
relationship between Buhari and Saraki appears to be coming on track.

A close associate of Tinubu, who pleaded for anonymity, however, told
Saturday Sun that indeed the APC leader was badly hurt by the
rejection of his ministerial nominees by Buhari, he would, however,
not have a hand in pulling down "a house he almost single-handedly
built with his efforts and resources."

Saturday Sun had in an exclusive report before the release of the
ministerial nominees reported the decision by President Buhari to dump
over 73 names submitted to him by state governors, APC leaders and
political godfathers to draw up a list of his own choice of
ministerial nominees.

Indeed, when the list was unveiled last week, many of the party
leaders including Tinubu were upset and left in shock. Rather than
pick the choice of Tinubu in the South West, Buhari selected former
Governors Babatunde Fashola (Lagos) and Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti), both
estranged political godsons of Tinubu.

The party leader could also not get human rights activist, Mr. Femi
Falana (SAN), Prof Pat Utomi and his former Commissioners for
Information and Finance in Lagos, Messrs Dele Alake and Wale Edun,
respectively on the list. Falana had been tipped to emerge as the
Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Alake as
Information Minister and Edun as Minister for Finance.

In Osun, while Governor Rauf Aregbesola is pushing the nomination of
his immediate predecessor, former Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola, in
deference to an acccord leading to the latter's defection to APC,
Tinubu is said to be backing the governor's Chief of Staff, Alhaji
Gboyega Oyetola, who is his (Tinubu's) blood relation.

In Ondo, the party leadership in the state is pushing the nomination
of its governorship candidate in 2012 poll, Chief Rotimi Akeredolu
SAN, while Tinubu is backing his bosom friend and APC National Vice
Chairman, South West, Chief Pius Akinyelure.

Fulani Invasion: Yoruba Leaders Threaten Secession

FOLLOWING alleged incessant and unprovoked attacks and invasion of
their farmlands by some Fulani herdsmen, notable Yoruba leaders held
an emergency summit in Ibadan, Oyo State, threatening to review its
status in the Nigerian federation.

The summit was entitled, National Insecurity and the Menace of Fulani
Herdsmen in Yorubaland.

The meeting, presided over by former Governor of the Western Region,
General Adeyinka Adebayo, warned that the Yoruba will no longer
tolerate the present structure of the country, which they claim
undermine self actualization of the people of the South West.

Reports from the summit said failure to restructure Nigeria using the
2014 confab report might force the Yoruba people to review her place
in a political arrangement that cannot guarantee the protection of her
citizens.

Factional leaders of the Oodua Peoples Congress, (OPC), Dr Fredrick
Faseun and Otunba Gani Adams were unanimous in saying that the time to
"leave Nigeria" and assert the sovereignty of the Yoruba people is
now.

The summit strongly condemned what it described as the "invasion and
killing of people in Yoruba territories" by the Fulani herdsmen.
The summit held in the House of Chiefs Section of the Parliament
Building of the Oyo State Secretariat with the theme "National
Insecurity and the Menace of Fulani Herdsmen in Yorubaland."

The participants also decried the continued oppression of the Yoruba
in their homeland by some Fulani herdsmen.

The summit cite incessant cases of rape, destruction of economic
plants that form the bedrock of the livelihood of locals, the armed
violence unleashed by the nomads coupled with the consequent cultural
disequilibrium the displacement of people from crisis-ridden Northern
Nigeria have brought to communities in Yorubaland.

He added that subsequent governments in Nigeria have come into power
waving slogans that end up leaving the country worse than they met it.
They demanded an immediate end to lawless nomadic activities in the
South West warning that any community who cannot establish ranches for
their flock should retreat from Yoruba territories.
At the event were prominent Yoruba sons and daughters from the
academia, politics and the Diaspora.

The sponsors of the summit were Yoruba Council of Elders, (YCE), Oodua
Foundation, Afenifere and the Yoruba Unity Forum, (YUF). Some of the
participants included the Oyo State Deputy Governor, Otunba Moses
Alake Adeyemo, who represented the State Governor, Senator Abiola
Ajimobi; Sola Ebiseni, who represented the Ondo State Governor,
Olusegun Mimiko, Pa Olanihun Ajayi, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, Pa Supo Sonibare,
Prof Banji Akintoye, Prof Toun Ogunseye, the first woman Professor in
Nigeria.
Others were Dr Fredrick Faseun, Otunba Gani Adams, Dr Kunle Olajide,
Chief Shuaib Oyedokun and the former Military governor of Lagos State,
Brig-Gen Raji Rasaki among many others.

The Afenifere Renewal Group, ARG and many other Pan-Yoruba groups were
however absent at the summit.

Fani Kayode hails summit
Meantime, against the backdrop of cases of kidnap and destruction of
farms by Fulani herdsmen, former Spokesperson of former President
Goodluck Jonathan's Campaign Organisation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode
hailed the Yoruba peoples meeting held in Ibadan, warning that the
zone cannot be sacrificial lamb to any other zone of the country.

He also warned that the South West may resort to self help if the
government fails to protect them.

In a statement yesterday, the former Minister of Aviation said if and
when the people of the South West were pushed to the wall, they would
then know exactly what to do, adding that the killings, cases of rape
and kidnap must stop.

Senate Receives Over 25 Petitions To Stop Buhari's 21 Ministerial Nominees

No fewer than 25 petitions have been submitted by various individuals
and groups seeking to stop the clearance of some of the 21 ministerial
nominees.

According to Punch reports, checks at the office of the Senate
Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions showed that 25
petitions had been submitted to it as of the close of work on
Thursday.

Apart from the petition against former Rivers State Governor Rotimi
Amaechi , which was submitted by the three senators from Rivers State
to the senate president on Wednesday, another senator representing
Kaduna South Senatorial District, Danjuma La'ah, submitted his on
Thursday against the nomination of Mrs. Amina Mohammed from Kaduna
State.

La'ah wrote on behalf of the Southern Kaduna Coalition, an
amalgamation of all the pressure and public interest groups of
Southern Kaduna extraction. Mohammed's accusers said she was not from
Kaduna.

The petition, signed by the group's coordinator, James Kanyi, read
in part, "We have credible evidence to believe that she is an indigene
of Gombe State and not Kaduna State as constitutionally required."

Eleven of the ministerial nominees were however at the National
Assembly on Thursday to submit their Curriculum Vitae ahead of next
Tuesday's screening.

The deadline for the submission of the CVs, according to the Senior
Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters
(Senate), Ita Enang, is Friday (today).

Saraki on Thursday asked the committee of the Senate currently
investigating the petitions against the nominees to submit its report
before the screening starts next week.

Meanwhile, the Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress
has disagreed with the Senate new rule that a ministerial nominee must
get the support of at least two senators from his state to scale
through screening.

The spokesman for the APC in Rivers, Mr. Chris Finebone, according to
Punch, said something was wrong with such a rule on the screening of
ministerial nominees.

Finebone explained that a ministerial nominee did not need the support
of any senator to be confirmed a minister.

The three representing Rivers State in the Senate – Olaka Nwogu,
George Sekibo and Osinakachukwu Ideozu – are all members of the
Peoples Democratic Party.

Amaechi, the nominee from the state is of the APC.

Calling on the Senate to forget about such criterion, Finebone
recalled that Musiliu Obanikoro, who was from an APC state, but a
member of the PDP, was able to scale through and became a minister.

Read Rivers APC's Statement In Part:

"I am sure that there is something wrong there; there is something not
correct there. I know we have had cases where, for an example,
Obanikoro never got the support of any senator and he scaled through.
So, there is something I suspect that is not right there.

"Beyond Obanikoro, we have also had other examples where ministerial
nominees never got the support of senators from their states and they
scaled through. How about states where the senators are all from the
opposition party? Does it mean that the Federal Government would
surrender to the opposition?

"I don't think it has been happening in the past. There were places
where the senators were from the opposition, yet the Federal
Government got its ministers not from the opposition party.

"The Senate should forget about such a rule because in the past it
never came to play. I want to be sure that it is a new thing they have
invented. But it does not work that way; it will not work that way. I
don't want to also believe that the rules are changing with some
persons in mind."

Also, a former aide to the immediate past governor of the state, Mr.
Tony Okocha, recalled that two senators in the past had opposed the
nomination of Mr. Henry Ogiri for a position in the Niger Delta
Development Commission but that Ogiri eventually scaled through
despite such opposition.

"It does not follow. Are we not Nigerians? Obanikoro, who was from a
state in the opposition party in the past, was made a minister in
recent past despite coming from the state from the opposition party."

Robbers Raid Imo Airport, Escape With N20m

Suspected armed robbers on Friday morning raided a micro finance bank
located in the Sam Mbakwe Cargo Airport, as well as the offices of
Arik and Air Peace Airlines in Imo State.

Over N20m and other valuables were said to have been carted away in
the robbery that lasted just a few minutes.

According to an eye witness, the armed robbers who besieged the
airport in two unmarked vehicles, overpowered the security men
attached to the bank.

The source who stated that the noise of banging of doors and windows
by the robbers coupled with their gunshots scared people away from the
scene.

An employee of Arik, who didn't want to be named, said their offices
were broken into, company and personal valuables of the workers were
stolen.

He said, "We are still in shock how the robbers could have been able
to operate freely without being challenged, with the number of
security men at the Airport, calls for serious concern because if the
Airport cannot be safe, where else can be."

Meanwhile when contacted, the Imo State Police Public Relations
Officer, Mr. Andrew Enwerem, who confirmed the incident, however, said
it was a case of burglary.

According to him, "We got the report that some hoodlums broke into a
Micro Finance Bank at the airport, but we did not get any report that
they removed cash and no one was killed or wounded.

"Already investigation is ongoing and the the two security men
attached to the bank are currently being interrogated."

Again, 17 Babies, 22 Pregnant Teenagers Rescued From Baby Factory At Orlu, Imo State

No fewer than 17 babies and four pregnant teenagers have been rescued
by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps operatives in Imo
State from an orphanage home allegedly being used as a baby factory.

Speaking with newsmen in Owerri on Friday, the State Commandant, Pedro
Idiba, said the command, acting on a tip-off, stormed the orphanage
home, known as Jehovah Jireh, located at Orlu in Orlu Local Government
Area of the state at about 9.30am on Thursday, last week.

Idiba gave the names of the teenage girls as Onyedikachi Obialor,
Oluchi Uzoma, Hope Ndukwu and Ogechi Njoku, adding that a two weeks
old baby, belonging to one Kasarachi, was among the babies rescued
from the supposed orphanage home.

He explained that his men uncovered a 2007 expired licence of the
orphanage home, alleged to have been owned by a Local Government staff
member in Orlu, known as Cecelia Egemole.

Idiba said, "That place was used as an orphanage home in disguise,
when the licence we saw there has since expired since 2007 and not
renewed.

"The place was used as both maternity and other thing as confirmed by
the girls we saw there; it was an unhealthy environment. The girls are
teenagers, the oldest among them is 19."

Also, a nanny, said to be an elder sister to the proprietress, Mrs
Felicia Egemole, confessed that some of the girls came to the
orphanage home to deliver their babies and left them behind.

EFCC Investigates Obibi- Ochasi Man Caught With 108 ATM Cards

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is investigating
the activities of a 34-year-old man allegedly in possession of 108 ATM
cards.

Identified as Pascal Onuora Udeh, he is said to have been arrested
recently at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos by the
National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). He was arrested during
the outward clearance of passengers on a Qatar Airline flight to
China.

A press statement in EFCC newsletter says the suspect who claims to be
a trader and an undergraduate of NnamdiAzikiwe University, Awka, is a
native of Umudimvillage of Obibi, OchasiAto, in Orlulocal government
area of Imo State. The suspect alleged that the debit cards were given
to him by his business associates to use in China to purchase men's
wears, the statement added.

It revealed that the suspect would be charged to court as soon as
investigations were concluded.

In a related development, the anti-graft agency is set to arraign one
Jonathan OduIsikwei for unlawful possession of 448 traveller's
cheques.

A statement by EFCC said Isikwei, 51, who is a native of Igbodo in
Aniocha local government area of Delta State, was arrested at the
Lagos airport by the NDLEA during the outward clearance of passengers
on a Belgium-bound flight.

The case was transferred to the EFCC for further investigation, where
it was discovered that the 448 travellers' cheques recovered from
Isikwei were discovered to purportedly belong to four banks in
America, Europe and Canada. All were signed.

The suspect, who said he exports dried fish from Nigeria to Belgium,
told investigators that he collected the parcel for onward delivery to
a friend with no knowledge of the contents.

Diezanii Asks Reasonable Nigerians To Pray For Her, As She Undergoes Cancer Surgery Next Week; Says She's Never Arrested

IMMEDIATE past Petroleum Resources Minister, Mrs Diezani
Alison-Madueke, who is battling with cancer in London and being
investigated by UK's National Crime Agency (NCA) for alleged
corruption, has asked Nigerians for a special favour. She wants
Nigerians to pray for her as she undergoes cancer surgery next week.

Diezani Alison-Madueke
Speaking through Oscar Onwudiwe, her family's lawyer, according to
online newspaper, The Cable, Diezani, who denied reports of her
arrest, said she was undergoing cancer treatment in the UK and "hopes
to come out strong to face all the allegations."

In a statement, Onwudiwe said: "The Madueke family, like most other
families, has its own challenges. For instance, Mrs. Diezani
Alison-Madueke has been receiving treatment for cancer in the UK which
started while she was in office. She completed months of chemotherapy
just last week and she is scheduled to undergo surgery next week in
London.

The family has been bearing this challenge with prayers and as much
grace and fortitude as possible; and would plead with all reasonable
Nigerians to pray for her recovery so that she can face these
allegations and give account of her stewardship."

The call for prayers came after an earlier statement released on
Thursday in which the family revealed the state of the former
minister.

Onwudiwe
had made the following statement:
"The stories are false but it(sic) feeds the mood of the moment;
hence, the silence from Diezani all along. It is worth emphasising
that Mrs Alison-Madueke was never arrested or detained and her
passport was never seized.

She was merely invited, and she honoured it promptly. But there is a
limit to how much any reasonable person can bear the tactics of these
… We all know that what makes a lie fly is the little truth contained
therein.

This happens to be the weapon used to defame highly-placed people."

Onwudiwe also accused
the Nigerian media of reporting "laughable claims" of a purchase of
an apartment in Hyde Park with an "amount which embarrassingly ranges
from £12.5 million sterling to £13 billion sterling (N3.9tr).

"This claim is utterly false and laughable, for the amounts mentioned
are only in the imagination of the reporters. This property is quite
popular. It belongs to a well-known eminently successful Nigerian
entrepreneur who would also find this allegation embarrassing as the
intention to sell the property has neither been contemplated nor
disclosed to any person."

Mixed reaction greets Diezani's prayer request
Diezani's request elicited mixed reactions from some Nigerians. While
some said they would not pray, others said they would pray for the
speedy recovery of the former minister to enable her face her graft
trial.

We will pray for her and all Nigerians – Ikokwu

Second Republic Politician, Chief Guy Ikokwu, who has always called
for the restructuring of the country and adoption of the parliamentary
system of government to check corruption, urged Nigerians to pray for
the former oil minister.

''We will pray for her and all other Nigerians, both those who are
ill and well so that God bestows His mercy on all for the right things
to be done in the nation. Nigeria needs God's mercy. God knows those
who are guilty and those who are not guilty,'' he said.

We will pray she recovers and asks for God's forgiveness – Sarah Jubril

Former Presidential Candidate, Mrs Sarah Jubril said apart from quick
recovery it is also good for Diezani to ask for God's forgiveness if
she is guilty of the graft allegations.

Her words: ''Thank God she believes Nigerians have a forgiving heart.
We will pray she recovers and ask God for forgiveness if the
allegations against her are true. Thank God she is alive. I wish her
quick recovery. It is good she has the humility to ask Nigerians for
their prayers. We hope to see her in good health soon.''

She doesn't deserve our prayers – Gbagi

However, former Minister of State for Education, Olorogun Kenneth
Gbagi, disagreed and urged Nigerians not to pray for the former
minister.

Chibok Girls Are Alive; Many Impregnated, Carrying VVF, Other Diseases – Escapee Chibok Girl Reveals

There were indications weekend that many of the 200 girls of the
Government Secondary School, Chibok abducted in April 2014, are alive
and holed up in the Lake Chad region of the North-East epicentre of
the battle to dislodge Boko Haram terrorists from Nigeria.

Sources disclosed to Vanguard that the girls who were relocated from
the initial Sambisa Camps of the terrorists, following unrelenting
bombardments by air and land operations, have been relocated to Lake
Chad area with some of the girls spread along border communities.
Vanguard reports that about two weeks ago, one of the abducted girls
who was formerly kept in a Sambisa forest camp, escaped from the hands
of the abductors and ran into the hands of some Fulani herdsmen. It
was the Fulani herdsmen having confirmed that the girl was a Chibok
girl, who assisted her to get to the Baga military base of the
multi-national Joint Task Force.

At the Baga base, the escapee girl was said to have confessed that
many of them were forcefully married to the terrorists who not only
impregnated them but infected some of them with different diseases. On
her part, she was not only impregnated, but she got the VVF disease
from one of the terrorists.

According to the escapee, at the camp where she escaped from there
were about 60 of the girls while others were shared and moved to
border communities.
Narrating more tales of woes on what the Chibok girls went through and
are still going through in the hands of the terrorists, the source
said though the Chibok girl had just put to bed, the VVF (Vesicant
Virginal Fistula) disease with which she was infected by the terrorist
had made her uncomfortable hence her decision to flee to seek for
medical help, as she was repeatedly passing solid waste
uncontrollably.

Continuing, the source said, "When the Fulani herdsman saw the girl in
the bush and questioned her about her mission, she narrated her
experience, which made the herdsman to take her to the soldiers in
that area. With her escape, there are now 59 of the girls left in her
camp."

Emphasizing that almost all of the girls have been married out to the
Boko Harram terrorists while quite a number of them have delivered
babies, the escapee told security agencies that the girls were always
moved from place to place in the Sambisa forest during the
bombardments but that when the heat was too much, they were all moved
out of the forest.

The escapee further disclosed to security agencies that Boko Haram
terrorists have been seriously weakened and are now moving from place
to place aimlessly like lost sheep, planting mines and IEDs
(improvised explosive devices) which some security forces have
mistakenly fallen prey to.

"All of us were forced to become Muslims but kept in camps far from
each other", she revealed. "You can only see and recognize those in
your camp as any of us who refused being Islamized was either beheaded
or shot at point blank range."

She revealed further that the camps where the Chibok girls are now
kept are in Kangoora, Mallam Fatori, Damasak, Tunbun Kaka and Tumbum
Gira. Many of these towns are located in the border communities around
Lake Chad with some in Nigeria and others in Chad.

Salary And Allowances Of NASS Members Revealed

The controversy over the monthly salary of a Nigerian lawmaker has
finally been laid to rest with a formal disclosure of what the
legislators earn. The National Institute of Legislative Studies, NILS,
apparently worried by growing public outcry against the Nigerian
lawmakers, on Friday released a set of documents, showing what
constitutes the earnings of the 109 Senators and 360 members of the
Nigerian House of Representatives.

National Assembly
The documents, which were made available to Vanguard in Abuja on
Friday, indicated that the Nigerian lawmakers earn perhaps one of the
least salaries among legislators in the world, as against the notion
that their pay was outrageous.
Apart from releasing global comparative figures drawn from nine
countries, the NILS also gave a breakdown of what constitutes the
monthly take-home pay of each Nigerian lawmaker. The figure shows that
while a Nigerian Senator gets an annual basic salary of N2,026,400,00
a member of the Nigerian House of Representatives goes home with
N1,985,212, 50 per year.
But beyond that a Senator takes home a bouquet of allowances which
hike their salary to N12, 902, 360.00 while their House of
Representatives counterpart goes home with N9,525,985.50 annually.
Thus, for the four-year tenure which the lawmaker stay in the NASS,
the Nigerian government spends a total of N1, 406,357,240.00 as basic
salary on the 109 Senators and N3,428,994,780.00 on the 360 members of
the House of Representatives.
The breakdown of the allowances are on: Vehicle fuelling/maintenance,
Constituency, Domestic Staff, Personal Assistant, Entertainment,
Recess, Utilities, Newspaper/Periodicals, Houses Maintenance,
Wardrobe, Estacode, Duty Tour, which attract more money available to
the lawmakers than their basic salaries.
Beyond that, the lawmakers earn special amount in every four-year
period on Accommodation, vehicle loan, furniture, and severance
allowance, which make every Senator to pocket N24,090,000.00 and a
House of Representatives member to go home with N23,822,00.00 within
the same period.
Thus for every four year which a lawmaker stays in the NASS, the
Federal Government spends N2,625, 810,000.00 on accommodation, vehicle
loans, furniture and severance gratuity on the 109 senators and
N8,575,920,000.00 on the 360 House of Representatives members.
This payment brings the total expenditure of the government to N33,
992, 360 for the senators and N33,347, 985, 50 on the members of the
HoR. The figures are lower when compared to what their counterparts in
eight other countries earn.
But the monies Nigerian lawmakers earn from their oversight functions
and other sources make them big earners.
A global comparison released by the NILS shows that lawmakers in the
Philippines earn the highest annual basic salary of $4, 497,957,
followed by their counterparts in the United States of America where a
Senator goes home with $3,409,422 while a member of the US House of
Representatives takes $1,429,909 home annually.
This is followed by lawmakers in Kenya who earn $968,013 per annum
followed by their counterparts in Australia who take home $646,230
while those in the United Kingdom go home with £494,285.43.
The list is followed by lawmakers from India, who earn $474,484,
Singapore with $253,469, and Tanzania with $230,961.
It will be recalled that the Nigerian government has been spending a
total of N150 billion per year on the NASS but has been forced to step
it down to N120 billion this year following rising outcry that the
lawmakers are taking too much from the Federation Account leaving
little for other sectors.

Senate Gives Conditions For Screening Ministerial Nominees

The Senate on Thursday reached a consensus that at least two senators
from the state of a ministerial nominee must endorse each person
nominated by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Senate laid out some strict rules, which would guide the screening
exercise of ministerial nominees, Chairman of the ad hoc committee on
Media and Publicity, Dino Melaye explained that the upper legislative
chamber has reached the resolution, adding that the Senate will also
adopt other constitutional provisions and conventions for screening
nominees.

Senator Melaye said that the Senate would also apply Section 147 of
the Nigerian constitution, which states that a nominee must also be an
indigene of one of the 36 states of the federation, before that person
can be screened.

One of such rules, which dwells on the practice and convention of the
senate, will require each of the nominees to have minimum support of
two out of the three senators from their states..

Senator Dino Melaye said the modalities revolve around two major
areas, which are relevant constitutional provisions as well as
practice and convention of the Senate.

"Every nominee must provide prove of compliance as required by the
constitution and the standard rules of the Senate.

"You must declare your assets and must have a certificate of proof by
the Code of Conduct Bureau.
Sen. Melaye also stated that in Section 1473 of the Constitution that
the Constitution did not speak on adoption of a state by marriage but
that "the President shall appoint at least one Minister from each
state who shall be an indigene of such state".

He also added that a minimum of two Senators must support a candidates
but there are other conditions involved.
Senator Melaye also said the validity of petitions received by the
senate against some of the ministerial nominees would definitely
decide the fate of those affected.

Earlier at plenary, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki received a
petition from Southern Kaduna coalition against a ministerial nominee
Amina Mohammed who is ministerial nominee.

The group in a petition filed against her complained that she is not
an indigene of the state, they urged President Buhari in a seven page
petition to nominate a minister from her state Gombe and not Kaduna
her state of marriage.

The Senate President directed the chairman, Senate Committee on Ethics
and Public Petitions, Senator Sam Anyanwu to forward reports of the
committee's findings on all petitions against ministerial nominees to
the Senate before Tuesday next week.

President Muhammadu Buhari had on Thursday asked ministerial nominees
to report to the Inspector General of Police, Mr Solomon Arase, for
profiling, ahead of the screening on Tuesday, October 13 by the
Senate.

Those who have already filled the forms include Audu Ogbeh (Benue),
Chris Ngige (Anambra), Udoma Udo Udoma (Akwa Ibom) and Abubakar Malami
(Kebbi) and Babatunde Fashola (Lagos).

A source explained that the reason for the exercise is for the police
to carry out further investigations on the ministerial nominees.

Rivers Panel Of Inquiry Indicts Former Governor Amaechi, Others

The Rivers State Government has presented a white paper demanding the
immediate prosecution of the former Governor Rotimi Amaechi and all
persons involved in what the government called fraudulent
transactions.

This is following the report of the 30-day sitting of the Justice
George Omeregi led Rivers State Judicial Commission of Inquiry, set up
to investigate the sale of state assets.

Members of the State Executive Council presented the white paper to
journalists in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

The Commissioner of Housing in Rivers State, Emma Okah, who spoke on
behalf of the State Government, told journalists in Port Harcourt that
the state's Attorney-General has been mandated to start all legal
processes against former governor, Mr Rotimi Amaechi; a former
military administrator of Rivers State, Brigadier Anthony Ukpo (Rtd)
and some other former political office holders to refund over 97
billion naira allegedly misappropriated in the sale of the state
valued assets.

The Commissioner of Housing stated that the issues of illegality
cannot be swept under the carpet.

"You will agree with me that the Omereji commission had several terms
of references and we will be taking them one after the other. The
first term of reference is to ascertain the sale of the Omoku 150
megawatts gas turbine; Afam 360 megawatts gas turbine; Trans-Amadi 136
megawatts gas turbine and the Eleme 75 megawatts gas turbine by the
administration of former Governor Rotimi Amaechi.

"The commission finds as a fact that the sale of 70% equity from the
First Independent Power Limited in Omoku gas turbine, Trans-Amadi gas
turbine, Afam Phase I gas turbine and Eleme gas turbine, have been
very difficult to justify. They have therefoe recommended the review
of sale of the power assets and the government of Rivers State has
accepted that recommendation.

"Refund of proceeds by Rotimi Amaechi, Chamberlain Peterside, and
Augustine Nwokocha. In furtherance of this findings that the sale of
the four gas turbines was unjustifiable and against the interest of
the government and people of Rivers State.

"The commission recommends that the former governor of Rivers State,
Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, along with his former commissioners for
Finance and Power , Dr. Chamberlain Peterside and Augustine Nwokocha,
respectively, should be held to account for their roles in the sales
of the power generation assets of First Independent Power Limited and
the disbursement of the proceeds there from.

"Government accepts this recommendation and directs the office of the
Honorable Attorney-General and commissioner for Justice, to promptly
set in motion the appropriate machinery for the recovery of the
proceeds of the sale of the gas turbines from the former governor,
Rotimi Amaechi, and every other persons implicated in the commission's
report," he said.

However, a leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state
and former Chief Of Staff Rivers State, Glory Emeh, while reacting to
the development, expressed the view that the sale of the gas turbines
was the right thing to do.

There are expectations that the fallout of the report of the judicial
panel of inquiry would produce more controversy.

Traders Cry For Help As Flood Ravages Ariaria Market

Aba used to be described as the melting point of the Igbo race. It is
a city where at least every family in Igbo land was not found. Indeed,
anybody who is somebody in Igbo land no matter where he is residing
presently had his roots in Aba. These coalesce and congregation of
Ndigbo in Aba was not for nothing. The Igbo being by nature
enterprising people; who have taken commerce to its limits, found Aba,
equally a commercial city an alluring abode.

But regrettably, Aba, a city that used to compare favourably with
ancient cities like Gao, Timbuktu, kano and others in terms of
commerce is now a ghost of itself owing to some inexplicable reasons.
The past administration could not put adjoining roads in the city in
good condition, making it impossible for traders who come from
neighbouring states and even Cameroon to access Aba to purchase their
goods, the result being that traders in Aba were put out of business.

Traders in some parts of Ariaria International are facing what has
been described as double wahala which could be found in bad roads
which dot the whole landscape of the city and the debilitating
flooding that is ravaging the popular A –Line and the drug section of
the market. Indeed the past eight years have not been the best of
times for traders in this part of the city.

Aba Metro gathered that in 2014, patent medicine dealers at the drugs
section of the market lost goods worth over N2 billion to the flood.
The traders alleged that flooding of the area was aggravated by a
building erected on a water way adjacent the market close to the
portion of the State Fire service. This obstructive structure is
reported to be owned by the son of a powerful former government
official. The flooding, the traders said is further made worse by the
deplorable nature of roads in the market and the Ukwu Mango area which
the last administration in the state claimed to have rehabilitated.

The traders have, therefore, sent a save our soul message to Governor
Okezie Ikpeazu, saying that if nothing was done urgently, the flood
would not only sack them from their area of business but will also
submerge the entire section of the market which they said is the pride
of Ariaria.

Speaking with Aba Metro, the traders, who appeared to have regretted
the day they got shops in that section of the market, lamented the
double trouble of daily wading through the muddy and sinking flood
water with its attendant health hazard and the loss of their
customers they have suffered over the years with no end in sight. They
expressed fear that if the flood was not checked, they would soon be
out of business as the flood is not abating.

A trader at A-Line, who gave his name as Chimaobi, appeal to the
governor to declare the place a disaster area and do something
urgently to save them from going out of business. "We want the state
Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu to come to our aid. We are really
suffering and don't know what to do. The past administration was only
keen in collecting levies from the market, they did not do much to
help us and that is why we are calling on Governor Ikpeazu to come to
our aid in order to help us come out of this ugly situation we have
found ourselves".

Samuel is another trader at A-Line, he has this to say: "Flood water
has entered her shops on several occasions and destroyed our goods.
Last year, our neighbours who sell drugs lost goods worth over N2
billion to flood and up till moment, nobody gave them a dime in form
of compensation".

Continuing, he said: "We weren't spared either if not that the drinks
and fruit juice we sell can be washed and dried up in the rain. But
some people that sell travelling bags also had a share of the flood
impact.

"In order not to be beaten twice, since then, some of us now rent some
of the lockup shops upstairs which we use as our parking store and use
this place that we are now as our display shop and at the end of each
market day we pack them upstairs because nobody is sure of when it
will rain next".

When asked about how the situation was affecting their business, the
trader retorted: "How many persons did you see coming into this flood
to buy or even to price for anything? For you to make any sales in a
day, you have to take your goods to where is called Enyimba, that is
where our customers now stay and call us on phone to place their
orders.

And for you to do this effectively, you must wear your rain boots. In
fact, there is no trader in this section of the market that does not
owe a pair of rain boots, otherwise you can not enter or come out of
your shop.

"It's good that you are here. It is not a rumour. We can only move in
and out of our shops with rain boots. Things are that bad, in fact,
the situation has worsened with the rains of yesterday (early Tuesday
morning)", he said.

Fulani Herdsmen Attack Falae Again

For the second time in two weeks, the former Secretary to the
Government of the Federation, Chief Olu Falae has been attacked by
Fulani herdsmen, in Ilado village, Akure North Local Government Area
of Ondo State. This time, it's the cows belonging to Fulani herdsmen,
that overrun the farm of the former presidential candidate.

This happened barely two weeks after Falae, also a former Minister of
Financ,e was kidnapped by suspected herdsmen from the farm but was
released four days after.

The Farm Manager, Mr Bruno ‎Akhigbodemen, alleged that the cows
brought to the farm by the Fulani herdsmen, destroyed over one
kilometre plantation of maize on Monday morning.

Akhigbodomen, who conducted journalists round the farmland on Tuesday
evening, explained that the herdsmen invaded the farm at about 2am on
Monday, leading to the destruction of the plantation.

He explained that ‎one of the workers, who saw them raised the alarm
but before other workers could come around, the invaders had left with
their herds.

The Farm Manager added that immediately the National Chairman of the
Social Democratic Party was informed of the incident, he reported it
to the state Police Command after which some operatives of the Special
Anti-Robbery Squad were deployed in the farm.

A police source said the detectives combed the neighbouring villages
for the suspects but they were unable to make any arrest as the
herdsmen were said to have left the area.

Describing the incident as devastating to his boss and the entire
workers of the farm, the manager appealed to the government and the
security agencies in the state to be proactive on the security of the
farmland.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Femi Joseph, said on the
telephone that he had yet to be briefed on the incident at the time of
filing this report.

succeed him, deny any wrongdoing.

A final decision is likely to be made on Friday by Hans Joachim

Rochas Foundation To Build School For Adamawa’s Less-Privileged

The Adamawa State government has allocated a large parcel of land to
the Rochas Foundation to build a school for the less-privileged.
Governor Jibrilla Bindow said on Sunday, in Yola, that the move was an
expression of the government's sacrifice, in the interest of
education.

He called on well-meaning Nigerians to invest more in education,
adding that the sector was vital to social development.

He commended Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State for the provision
of a secondary school for the less-privileged in Adamawa.

He added that the state was one of the educational disadvantaged,
assuring him of support from the state government.

The land allotted to the Rochas Fundation was a former golf field.

He said that the public interest surpassed the interest of an
individual or group of individuals.

He said the gesture would go a long way in propagating the change the
people had been yearning for.

"We can sacrifice anything for education because it is only peace that
is as important as education. I commend Governor Rochas Okorocha for
this kind gesture and I pray that the lord will grant him success in
his future political endeavours. I am calling on well-meaning
Nigerians to take a cue from Rochas to invest more in education,
especially by supporting the less-privileged.

"We will negotiate with the golfers and provide an alternative place
for them, because even the constitution states that public interest
surpasses any group interest."

Earlier, Okorocha, who is also the chairman of the Rochas Foundation
said the construction of the school would start in January 2015.

He said that the gesture was to fulfil the promised he made that his
foundation would build a school for internally displaced persons
(IDPs).

He said that the foundation would incorporate the Attorney General,
Commissioner for Education and the Speaker of the State House of
Assembly as board members, adding that the board members would ensure
that the beneficiaries of the educational gesture were genuinely the
less-privileged.

He said that 75 per cent of the students would be orphans, adding that
the foundation would train the students to the university.

He said that the foundation had partnered with some universities in
around the world.

He said that the school would have a hostel, staff quarters and sports
complex, amongst others.

Buhari Must Be Screened If He’s Petroleum Minister — SENATE

Strong indications have emerged that today's plenary session, where
the Senate would unveil the ministerial list sent by President
Muhammadu Buhari, may be stormy as senators are saying the President
must, in line with the constitution, submit himself before the Senate
for screening if he appointed himself Minister of Petroleum.

They are also set to reject an incomplete list, saying the
constitution provides for a nominee from each state of the federation
and that any list that did not cover the 36 states would suffer
serious opposition on the floor of the Senate.

The senators have also vowed that they would not be cowed by the trial
of Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, at the Code of Conduct
Tribunal, CCT, just as they promised to adopt stringent measures in
line with the provisions of the Constitution during the screening of
ministerial nominees.

They added that the tradition of take-a-bow for senators coming for
screening as ministers would be jettisoned, adding that they were
prepared to send names of nominees to the sender of such a list.

Senate President, Dr. Saraki, is currently facing trial at CCT,
following a 13-count charge levelled against him by the Code of
Conduct Bureau, CCB, bordering on alleged corruption and false
declaration of assets in 2003 and summoned him to appear before it,
which he did.

'We'll stick to rules'

Speaking with journalists yesterday in Abuja, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa,
Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Abia North, who noted that the list was
expected to be complete, in line with the Constitution, said: "The
list will be unveiled tomorrow( today). The Senate President kept to
his words that the envelope will remain sealed until tomorrow
(yesterday).

"We know that all we have been reading could be speculations until it
is opened. It will be read on the floor of the Senate and we will
know. Even the 21 that people are speculating will be ascertained
tomorrow (today) on the floor.

"The Constitution does not support ministers by batches. Every state
must be represented but if the number is not complete, some of us may
raise constitutional issues. If we have to wait for another three
months for him to send another list comprising representatives of
other states, it means those states would be non-functional.

"We will be guided by the constitution and the rules of the senate.
This time around, we resolved that we are going to be quite stringent.
We are going to ensure that whoever is coming as the minister of the
Federal Republic of Nigeria must be somebody worth the salt; somebody
we can rely upon and somebody that would have met the constitutional
requirements.

'We'll stick to the rules'

"We are not considering waving any rule. Why should we wave the rule?
If we want to do that, it should be before the screening. I believe
that at the end of the day Nigerians will be happy because some
Nigerians are already saying that the names being speculated were not
what they have been waiting for these five months.

"This government has tagged itself as the government of change. If
that is the cardinal thing, it will be against this Senate and,
indeed, against the President and Nigerians for us to see a very
strong allegation that hinges on corruption and we ignore it. If we
see a strong petition, definitely we will look into it and follow it
to a logical conclusion.

"If it requires writing to the anti-graft agencies like ICPC or EFCC
to give us a report on such a person, we will do that because that is
what screening is all about. Screening is not a tea party. In Cross
River State the appointees are going to write aptitude test."

Days of take-a-bow over

On the President's decision to appoint himself as Minister of
Petroleum, he said: "I do not think the President's name will be on
the list and I also do not think that the President will say he is a
minister because if you are a minister, one of the conditions is that
you must be subjected to screening and approval of the Senate.

"He, as the chief minister, can be there to supervise any ministry,
but he cannot be a minister. Whoever is advising him to be minister is
not advising him rightly."

Chairman, Senate ad hoc Committee on Publicity, Senator Dino Melaye
(APC, Kogi West): "In our screening of ministers, it will not be
business as usual. The era of take a bow and go are over. The right
people will be made ministers without any political or religious
consideration."

Coach Oliseh Sends Enyeama Out Of Super Eagles Camp

Super Eagles coach, Sunday Oliseh, has expelled goalkeeper Vincent
Enyeama from the team's camp in Belgium.

Enyeama, who joined the team on Tuesday (October 6) had questioned
Coach Oliseh's choice of naming Ahmed Musa captain for the friendly
games against DR Congo and Cameroon. The coach did not like it and
asked him to leave the team's hotel and immediately made moves to call
up Dele Alampasu.

In September, the goalkeeper failed to report to camp in Abuja for the
Super Eagles' Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Tanzania, only
for news to break that he had lost his mother.

Coach Oliseh has reiterated that indiscipline and poor show of
commitment from players would not be allowed in his team, particularly
during the rebuilding phase.

Speaking to Channels Sports, President of Nigeria Football Federation
(NFF), Amaju Pinnick, confirmed that he had spoken with the coach and
player.

"When I heard of the situation, I called Coach Sunday Oliseh and he
confirmed he told Vincent to leave the team hotel. Yes, there was a
misunderstanding but the matter has been resolved and Enyeama will
stay in camp," he said.

“El-Rufai Lied, We Never Spent Billions On Independence Anniversary” -- GEJ

In a statement issued on behalf of the former president on Sunday
October 4, Abubakar Sulaiman, the immediate past minister/deputy
chairman, National Planning Commission, branded the Governor of Kaduna
state, Mallam Nasir el-rufai a 'liar' for alleging that his
administration spent N64 billion on October 1 celebrations between
2010 and 2015. He added that Jonathan administration spent only N332.6
million for the celebration in 3 years – an average of N66m per year.
The statement reads:

"We were taken aback by the recent comment reportedly credited to His
Excellency, Governor Nasir El-Rufai where he claimed that the
immediate past President, His Excellency, Dr. Goodluck Ebele
Jonathan's administration spent N64billion to cover the country
independence anniversary spending in five years. The break down,
according to the governor showed that N13billion was spent in 2011,
N15billion in 2012 and N14billion in 2013 and N22billion allegedly
spent in 2014.
This tissue of lies was contained on his facebook comment on Thursday.
Ordinarily, we would have allowed this to go as just ranting of a
favour seeker , but for the sake of ordinary Nigerians who were
abreast of happenings under the administration and also those who
never did, we will like to set the record straight. It is important to
correct the misinformation so that the unsuspecting public would not
be misled. For the record, a breakdown of our anniversary spending
between 2012 to 2014 amounted to N332.6million. We challenge the
Office of the Government of the Federation (OSGF) to publish these
details for the consumption of the public. For the record, a breakdown
of our spending for this event between 2012 and 2104 goes thus;
2012-107.6million; 2013-45million and 2014 had 180million. So, the
question here is where did the billions as claimed by El-Rufai emanate
from? Even though that of 2010 and 2011 are not handy now, but it
should be known that they all fall within the same bracket as the one
stated, except that the 2010 anniversary was a golden one when the
country marked her 50 year of independence. But even then , not such
outrageous sum was either budgeted or expended . Again, it is germane
to explain the increase in the 2013 anniversary spending for the
purpose of accountability. The National Honours Award Investiture was
incorporated into the celebration, thus making it two events in one,
hence the N174,800,000.00 budget. We also want to add that the said
award investiture could not hold in 2013 and the approved budget
rolled over and was utilized to organise the investiture in 2014. It
is high time government functionaries desisted from abusing their
immunity by destroying history and trading on lies just to gain cheap
popularity or curry one favour or the other from certain quarters.
Perhaps President Olusegun Obasanjo was right in his assessment of
El-Rufai when he said in his latest memoir, My Watch that his vivid
recollection of him (El-Rufai)is his penchant for lying, for unfair
embellishment of stories and his inability to sustain loyalty for
long. That exactly is what El-Rufai has done with his ungodly
fabrication of lies against Jonathan government. One hopes that
President Buhari would be on guard against being misled by the likes
of El-Rufai who are hell bent on misinforming the Nigerian publics.

Our Economy Is Ill And Getting Worse -- Etcetera

Controversial write and singer Etcetera is back again! Read his rants below.

Is Nigeria getting worse? That is a very provocative question. I have
found that most people that hate Nigeria are very eager to agree that
Nigeria is getting worse, while a lot of those that love Nigeria are
very hesitant to admit that Nigeria is in decline. Well, I am proud to
be a Nigerian, but I cannot lie to myself or tell you that Nigeria is
doing just fine. The evidence is undeniable. Our economy is ill and is
rapidly getting worse. God handed us the resources to be one of the
greatest economic machines in the world and we have wrecked it. But
until we are willing to look in the mirror and admit how bad things
have got, we won't be ready for the solutions that are necessary. The
truth is that there are things that we can do to reverse the decline.
It does not have to be permanent. We have got away from the things
that made Nigeria great, and we need to admit that we are on the wrong
path and start fixing this country.

But if we choose to continue down the road that we are currently on,
it will lead us into the darkest chapters in Nigerian history.

If someone had written a story about what is happening now in Nigeria
20 years ago, people would have laughed and said "Wow that is a good
story, but it would never happen here, not in our Nigeria." But now,
the joke is on all of us. Nigeria has turned into one big comedy club
where the audience is wearing a frown as they listen to the president
cracking his "Change" joke. The president speaks of change from the
same mouth that he nominates those purported to be ministerial
nominees. He should tell us what change he expects from the list. How
do you achieve this change doing the same old things with the same old
people? Some governors on the list are still entangled in corruption
allegations levelled against them by their successors. What happened
to your zero tolerance to corruption mantra? This whole change thing
is becoming a gargantuan joke that is not funny at all.

A devastating economic collapse has left the country in a stagnant
decline, where Nigerians are still sleeping under bridges, ghettos
like Ajegunle are overfilled, while almost all houses in Victoria
Island and ikoyi lie vacant with 'for sale' banners hanging on almost
every gate, the kleptocratic politicians openly steal billions of
dollars, and remain free, while people charged with petty thefts go to
jail and have no bonds, protests break out and are quickly stifled by
an authoritarian police force, media houses are getting shut down and
becoming government controlled and relay repeating news stories that
have little to do with real events, and are more focused on propaganda
and nonsense, a politician takes several multimillion dollar vacations
at taxpayer expense, while ordinary Nigerian families cannot afford
the skyrocketing food costs, the senate is hopelessly unable to pass
any kind of legislation that can benefit average Nigerians, but easily
pass legislation benefitting themselves and usurping the constitution,
prisons are built and manned waiting for those who dare to speak the
truth against to power, the roads in estates built by politicians and
their rich cronies are tarred over and over while the areas occupied
by the poor masses are left in ruins, terrorists are granted amnesty
and pacified with fat monthly allowances while law abiding citizens
are gnashing their teeth. Whew! Did I miss anything? What about a
hero? Maybe a small glimmer of hope. Maybe Buhari? hopefully. I would
like the next paragraph of this article to read, "At Nigeria's darkest
hour, the people defied the odds, and ignored the experts and elected
a man of character and convictions to the office of the Presidency,
and the said man restored the constitution, defeated boko haram,
brought back the missing Chibok girls, brought justice to the people
by arresting the evil men and women responsible for years of death and
debt upon this nation."

Now I like that ending. Will it happen? I hope to God it can be so. If
I told a story 30 years ago that Nigeria will be worse off at 55,
would you have believed me?

If Chelsea Sack Me, They Sack Best Manager They Had – Mourinho

Under-pressure, Jose Mourinho has said that he will not walk away from
the club, insisting that if the club sack him, they would have sacked
the best manager in the club history.

"I want to make it clear, I won't run away and if the club want to
sack, they have to. I won't run away from my responsibilities"

"If the club sack me, they sack the best manager the club has ever had."

"I want to work. I have a big self esteem and big ego. I am the best.
These bad results hurt me a lot"

He made the remark in his post-match conference after his team
suffered another defeat.

Manager Jose Mourinho tasted Premier League defeat for the third time
in just seven games, the same amount of reverses the Blues suffered in
the entire campaign last season.

It appeared that Chelsea were set to bounce back from Champions League
disappointment against Porto when Willian fired home a sumptuous
free-kick to open the scoring.

But Southampton were determined to take three points from London, and
after Steven Davis equalised shortly before the break further goals
from Sadio Mane and Graziano Pelle sealed Chelsea's fate.

red T-shirt, while holding up a mobile phone in his left hand and
smiling to the camera.

alarm about Okoro's tweets as early as 10 pm on Friday.

Pope Expels Gay Priest From Vatican

The Vatican, on Saturday, fired a senior priest, Krzysztof Charamsa,
who publicly came out as gay on the eve of a major meeting of church
leaders to discuss the Church's stance on social issues such as
divorce and homosexuality.

A statement by a spokesman for Pope Francis described the Polish
priest's action as "very serious and irresponsible," adding that he
would be immediately sacked from his post as a theologian in the
Vatican.

The statement read, "The decision to make such a pointed statement on
the eve of the opening of the synod appears very serious and
irresponsible, since it aims to subject the synod assembly to undue
media pressure."

Charamsa, who is a mid-level official in the Vatican bureaucracy's
dealing with church doctrine, flanked by his Spanish boyfriend while
donning his priest's collar, on Saturday, had earlier told a news
conference in Rome that he was compelled to speak out against the
"hypocrisy and paranoia" that he said had shaped the Church's attitude
to sexual minorities.

The 43-year-old priest said, "I'm out of the closet, and I'm very
happy about that. I want to be an advocate for all sexual minorities
and their families who have suffered in silence."

He presented a 10-point "liberation manifesto" against
"institutionalised homophobia in the Church," which he said
particularly oppressed the gay men who, according to him, make up the
majority of priests.

He also revealed plans for a book about his 12 years at the heart of a
Vatican bureaucracy, only just recovering from a scandal under
previous Pope Benedict XVI over the influence of a "gay lobby" among
senior clergy.
