The Enugu state chapter of the All Progressives Congress has been hit
with a major crisis as report claims that the APC National
Vice-Chairman, South-East, Mr. Emma Eneukwu, allegedly slapped the
party's governorship candidate, Mr. Okey Ezea, following an argument
over ministerial slot in the forthcoming Muhammadu Buhari-led
administration.
The alleged incident happened on Thursday during a meeting of
South-East APC leaders at the Imo State Governor's Lodge in Abuja.
The incident was disclosed by Ezea via a text message that was
forwarded to journalists in Enugu on Friday.
The text message read, "Emma Eneukwu slapped me today because I told
South-East leaders that Nsukka has not been minister since 1999.
"He did this before Rochas, Ngige, Izunaso, J. O. J, Gen. Eze, Ucha etc.
"I just said the truth and requested justice and equity in the affairs
of our party and Enugu State.
"Emma (Eneukwu) wants to be minister by violence. Emma is from Udi
Local Government Area which has been producing minister since 2007,
including the incumbent, Chinedu Nebo."
Eneukwu however denied slapping Ezea, adding that such incident never happened.
He said, "I am surprised about that, nothing like that happened, I am
very surprised.
"That story is alien to me; I don't know anything about it.
"Maybe it is a calculated attempt to mar my image. I didn't attack
anybody, I am not a thug. I don't fight."

Nollywood Actors Commend DSTV For Launch Of Igbo Channel
A cross section of Igbo Nollywood actors have commended the DSTV for
launching the Igbo Channel in its television station.
Some of the artistes who spoke at the end of the event in Enugu on
Friday expressed satisfaction with the development.
A singer and actress, Onyeka Onwenu, said the inclusion of Igbo
channel in the DSTV bouquet was commendable and long overdue.
"It is a wonderful thing and long overdue. Finally it is here to
revive our culture and language," Ms. Onwenu said. "If you lose your
language, you have lost your culture and your identity."
Ms. Onwenu, who is also the Director General of the Women Commission,
Abuja, however, stressed the need to improve the content of Igbo
programmes and movies.
"The idea of women showing off their bare bodies is not part of Igbo
culture," she said. "There is a depth to our culture of core values,
integrity, success and entrepreneurship."
The actress urged the young people to strive to know their culture,
calling on parents to speak the mother tongue to their children for
true identity.
Veteran actor, Pete Edochie, said he was fulfilled with the launch of
the new channel.
"I feel fulfilled because we, the Igbos, had wanted a medium through
which to revive our ailing culture," Mr. Edochie sqid. "This is it."
Mr. Edochie called on governments of the South East and the private
sector, to sponsor programmes in the channel, to sustain the culture
and language.
Earlier, the managing director of the DSTV, Joseph Ugbe, said the
broadcast station introduced the Igbo channel, following persistent
requests from the people and the media.
Mr. Ugbe expressed delight at the massive support of the people over
the launch, and promised to work with the Nollywood to sustain the
channel.
Others who commended the DSTV for the gesture include Patience
Ozokwor, Genevieve Nnaji, Kalu Ikeagwu, Gideon Okeke and Ossy Ukeje.

Nigerian Student Emerges First At African Contest
A 500 Level Petroleum Engineering student of Covenant University, Ota,
Ogun State, Zainab Titus, has come first at the 2015 SPE Africa Region
Students Technical Paper contest which took place on April 18, 2015 at
the Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda.
Zainab was selected through a rigorous process in which the SPE
considered over 170 submitted abstracts from African students in
various universities across the continent.
From this, twelve (eight in the undergraduate category and four in the
postgraduate category) were successful and invited in an all-expense
paid to present their works at Makerere University, in Kampala,
Uganda.
Titus presented an abstract on "Analytical Model for Improving
Completion Efficiency and Production Optimisation," a newly developed
diagnostic tool with wide industry applications.
This earned her remarkable approval from the panel of judges and other
participants, thereby emerging "The First Place Winner for the
Undergraduate Category in Africa" despite being the first
representation of the university ever in the contest.
Meanwhile, the first place winners in both categories would represent
Africa at the Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition in Texas, USA
in September 2015.
In a similar vein, the university recently had the highest listing of
leading Nigerian scientists by a Spanish-based research group,
Cybermetrics. The university produced 78 out of the 500 Nigerian
scientists listed.

Influential Women To Watch In Buhari's Govt
>Photo: Aishat Buhari|
The forthcoming Gen. Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government will,
like the current administration, parade many women believed to be
influential.
The outgoing administration of President Goodluck Jonathan boasts of
an array of influential women, who command much respect even among
their male counterparts. Apart from the President's wife, Dame
Patience Jonathan, who pundit said was always interested in official
matters and those who get elective and appointive positions, it was
said that the influence of the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi
Okonjo-Iweala; and the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani
Alison-Madueke, made Jonathan's administration popular.
The two ministers currently head sensitive ministries in Jonathan's government.
Likewise, the inauguration of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari as Nigeria's new
President on May 29 will throw up another set of influential women.
Some of the women were believed to have invested their energy in the
March 28 pre-election campaigns in which the All Progressives Congress
presidential candidate won.
The women, parading what may be described as robust credentials,
braved all odds to contest in elections like their male counterparts
to represent the people of their various political constituencies or
districts.
A few of them, according to observers, will wield a lot of influence
in the incoming administration by the virtue of their positions as the
wives of the President or vice-president, while others will hold sway
because of the offices they occupy in the APC executive committee.
Aisha Buhari
The 44-year-old wife of the President-elect, Hajiya Aisha Buhari, will
automatically become the country's new First Lady on May 29 after her
husband's inauguration.
The Adamawa State born cosmetologist attended the famous Ahmadu Bello
University, Zaria, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in
Public Administration.
Though some people have described the member of the United Kingdom
Vocational Training and Charitable Trust and the International Health
and Beauty Council as an introvert, she is said to be a consummate
politician and strong believer in the project Nigeria. The alumnus of
the famous Carlton Institute of London and the Academy Esthetique
Beauty Institute of France did tell everyone during the pre-election
campaigns that her husband, if elected, would give women opportunities
to contribute to the development of the country.
Hajiya Buhari demonstrated her passion for the development of Nigerian
women at a campaign rally recently in Edo State, where she assured
women that her husband would initiate policies that would guarantee
their improved living standard.
She said, "I am here to let Edo women know that when my husband is
elected into office as President, insecurity, the girl-child
trafficking, the plight of the widows in the South-East will be looked
into.
"There must be a cultural design that can accommodate the widow. A
design that would make the girl-child comfortable wherever she is in
this country.
"The portion of the girl-child is to have a high standard and moral
society for her to live in, get married, have children, train them and
also mould them to become future leaders."
Dolapo Osinbajo
Little was known about Dolapo Osinbajo until her husband emerged as
the APC vice-presidential candidate.
The grand-child of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, is the leader
of the Ladies Fellowship of the Redeemed Christian Church of God,
Jesus House Paris, Banana Island, Lagos.
Described as humble and submissive wife by those who are close to her
family, she supported her husband in 2007 to establish "The Orderly
Society Trust," a non- governmental organisation dedicated to the
promotion of Christian ethics and orderliness.
While others sought political offices to touch the people's lives,
Mrs. Osinbajo yearned for a different avenue to reach the larger
society, especially the poor. She therefore wrote and launched a book,
"They Call Me Mama."

How I Survived Cancer --Okonjo-Iweala
A rare insight into the past physical challenge of the coordinating
minister of the economy and minister of finance, Dr. Ngozi
Okonjo-Iweala emerged yesterday when she disclosed that she survived
cancer 15 years ago affirming the scare is not the end of life.
Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Dr.
Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala
She spoke at the service of songs for the late Oronto Douglas, special
adviser to the president on research and documentation that held in
Abuja last night.
The service was attended by a cross section of the society from civil
society, government, the media, the clergy among others.
President Goodluck Jonathan was represented by Senator Anyim Pius
Anyim, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, at the
service which remarkably brought together his associates from both
sides of the political divide including former Governor Kayode Fayemi,
Pastor Tunde Bakare who brought greetings from General Muhammadu
Buhari, ministers, former chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes
Commission, EFCC Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, Senator-Elect Ben Murray Bruce,
deputy managing director of Thisday, Mr. Kayode Komolafe among several
others.
In her remarks at the occasion, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala said: "Oronto and I
had two similarities in life, we both had cancer. I had my last
surgery, 15 years ago and I shared my experience with him," she said,
narrating how she repeatedly sought to encourage him using her triumph
over the disease.
Tributes from several speakers centered on how Oronto built bridges
across political divides. Dr. Fayemi, Hon Uche Onyeogocha leading
members of the All Progressives Congress, APC spoke in that direction
and they were buttressed by Pastor Bakare.
Tributes also came from former Governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha of
Bayelsa State, Dr. Sam Amadi, chairman National Electricity Regulatory
Commission, Rev. Nnimmo Bassey, Yinka Odumakin, Ken Saro Wiwa among
others.
... Denies appointing PWC to audit NNPC
Meanwhile, Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, yesterday, denied appointing
Price WaterHouse Coopers to conduct the forensic audit of the Nigerian
National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).
Reacting to a suit against her, filed by SIAO Partners, a group of
three accounting firms, over breach of Nigeria's local content laws,
Okonjo-Iweala in a statement, wondered why the aggrieved firms could
not do their work thoroughly to determine certain basic facts about
the issue.
The statement, signed by her Special Adviser, Mr. Paul Nwabuikwu,
said, "It has come to the attention of the Coordinating Minister for

7 Yr-Old Boy Electrocuted To Death In Imo
Tragedy struck in a quiet village of Awogu, Logara Ngor Okpala Local
Council of Imo State when a seven- year- old boy, Master Chimezurum
Egegbara, was reportedly electrocuted.
According to family source, who disclosed the incident to The Guardian
on Friday, Chimezurum was said to be playing football around the

"Chimezurum was such a loveable child who would be missed. If anyone

missed. It is an unfortunate incident," he said.

Senate Presidency: North East Caucus Of APC Disowns Ahmad Lawan
The Senate North east caucus of the All Progressives Congress (APC)
yesterday distanced itself from the aspiration of Senator Ahmad Lawan
to emerge as the President of the Eighth Senate.
The caucus addressed Senate correspondents yesterday in Abuja.
Caucus leader, Senator Danjuma Goje from Gombe State, said what was
before the North east was how to persuade APC leadership to consider
the region for the "highest position in the National Assembly."
Besides, Goje said the caucus has opened channels of communication
with five other caucuses in the chamber and outside the National
Assembly as well.
His words: "The members of the North East APC Senators caucus in a
meeting held in Kaduna Room of Transcorp Hilton Hotel on April 30,
2015 with the 12 of the 13 members in attendance and one apology from
Ahmed Zanah, who was indisposed but was with us on telephone, also
concurred, which means that he was in harmony with what we discussed
yesterday.
"We resolved as follows yesterday, that I, Senator Mohammed Danjuma
Goje, from Gombe Central senatorial district, was unanimously elected
as the leader of the caucus and Senator Isa Hamamisu as the secretary
of the caucus.
"While the party leadership is considering the zoning of the National
Assembly leadership position, the caucus is appealing for the zoning
of highest position in the National Assembly to the North East
considering the special needs of this zone.
"In other words, we resolved to call the leadership of our party to
formally zone the highest office of the National Assembly to our zone
in view of our special circumstance.
"This caucus should be allowed in consultation with the party
leadership, other caucuses, zonal leaders, other stakeholders to
nominate the senator suitable to occupy such an office which is zoned
to our zone.
"For this reason, the caucus urges the public and distinguished
colleagues nationwide and indeed, everybody, Nigerians and
non-Nigerians to completely disregard any purported endorsement of any
Senator from the North East by any zone because zoning of posts by APC
has not been formally done yet.
"We are waiting for our formal zoning of the various posts of the
national assembly before we commence nomination and we believe that
any post zoned to us must have our input as the caucus and then, we
consult with other caucuses, party leadership and indeed, other
stakeholders before arriving at a decision.
"We should completely disregard any endorsement of any of our member
here or absent. We do not know anything about it, we do not support
it, we disassociate ourselves completely from it."
Senator Goje reiterated that the caucus was not in support of any
other caucus adopting or endorsing any senator from the North east for
the Senate Presidency.
"What we are saying is that we, the North East caucus, formally
disassociate ourselves from any endorsement from any other zone. Other
zones have the right to decide what they want but we in the North East
are not associating ourselves with those so-called endorsements
because the party has not zoned anything to us.
"It is after the zoning has been announced that we will sit down and
nominate our candidates that we feel are capable and suitable to
represent the zone. But we cannot stop others from doing what they
want, all we are saying is that we are not part of it. We have nobody
in mind yet, we have not decided anything because we do not know what
is coming to us. We do not want to jump the gun..." Goje affirmed.
Senators-elect at the briefing apart from Goje, were, the Secretary of
the caucus, Isa Ahmed Gusau; ( Bauchi Central); Ali Ndume ( Borno
South); Bukar Abba Ibrahim ( Yobe Central) and Abdulaziz Murtala Nyako
( Adamawa Central.
Others are, Binta Garba ( Adamawa North); Ahmed Abubakar ( Adamawa
South); Usman Bayero Nafada ( Gombe North); Abubakar Jare ( Borno
North ) and Sulyman Nazif ( Bauchi North).
The caucus' new stance on the zoning controversy in the APC is at
variance with the earlier postures of senators Goje and Garba who have
at different times indicated interest in the zone getting the deputy
senate president slot.

Imo Assembly Approves N23.7bn 2014 Supplementary Budget
Members of the Imo State House of As-sembly, yesterday, in plenary,
unani-mously approved a re-or-dered supplementary budget of
N23,752,610,557 for the year ended 2014.
Raising the motion before her colleagues, the Major-ity Leader of the
House and member representing Ahiazu Mbaise state constituency, Mrs.
Adaku Ihuoma, urged members of the House to give accelerated passage
to the supplementary budget, as this would accord the executive the
necessary support in carry-ing out its duties in the interest of the
people of the state.
This was just as the House amended the law establish-ing the proposed
Imo Turkish University and re-named it Imo State Claretian
Univer-sity, Onuimo-Okigwe, follow-ing lack of commitment by the
Turkish stakeholders, who had earlier indicated interest in the
university project.
Contributing to the amend-ment bill, the member rep-resenting Isu
state constitu-ency, Ikenna Emeh, said the amendment in the name of
the proposed institution became necessary due to al-leged
non-commitment of the Turkish stakeholders, who were supposed partners
in the establishment of the institu-tion. He stated that the order of
the Claretian missionary had shown enough interest in partnering with
the state gov-ernment towards ensuring that the university was
established.
The House also amended the law establishing the Imo State College of
Education (Technical) to become the Imo State College of Education,
Ihitte-Uboma.
Contributing to the bill, the member for Isiala Mbano state
constituency, Simeon Iwunze, explained to the House that the amendment
to the bill estab-lishing the institution would give it a wider scope,
both in admission and in attracting the necessary logistics needed for
its sustainability.

I Became Blind After Drinking Ogogoro --Ode-Irele Survivor
One of the survivors of the Ode-Irele methanol poisoning, Mr. Olorunwa
Jero, yesterday, recounted his ordeal in the throes of death.
Jero, a father of six, who is a vulcaniser, narrated: "By the time I
was brought here, I had gone blind. I could not identify my wife, I
could not identify anything. I did not even know when I arrived here.
"But I thank God and the management and staff of University College
Hospital, UCH, for bailing me out. I can see all of you here clearly.
I can even identify the clothes each one of you is putting on."
The victim commended the teaching hospital for its timely medical
intervention which he said saved his life.
Meantime, UCH management, yesterday, confirmed that five victims of
Ode-Irele methanol poisoning were responding to treatment.
The victims were said to have taken the methanol while consuming a local gin.
Confirming that the toxin was detected in the blood and urine of the
victims, Professor Temitope Alonge, Chief Medical Director, UCH, said
the five victims were transferred to the teaching hospital on April 18
adding that they had regained their lost sight as a result of taking
the chemical.
Alonge, who said this while speaking with newsmen in Ibadan, warned
people to be wary of taking local gin so as to avoid s similar
unpleasant experience.
According to the CMD, series of tests were carried out on the victims
and the samples of the three drinks they took.
The medical practitioner said: "On April 18, the Consultant
Pathologist with the Ondo State Ministry of Health, Dr. Osasan, called
to seek the assistance of the University College Hospital, Ibadan, in
the management of five patients who survived the Ode-Irele
neuro-toxicity saga who were completely blind.
''We agreed to take over the management of the patients but requested
for the samples of the local gin that were incriminated along the
fresh blood and urine samples of the patients.
''I contacted the consultant neurologist on call, Dr. Steeve Oluwole
for a comprehensive evaluation of the patients because of the clinical
presentation of the patients that had died and the ones that survived
since they all pointed to neurotoxicity.
''In addition, the clinical pharmacologists led by Professor Catherine
Falade, the laboratory scientists and specialists advisers to the
hospital, Professor Segun Ademowo, were all contacted for the
biochemical analyses of the blood of these patients as well as the
urine in addition to the three samples of local gin that was
reportedly consumed by the patients.
He added that all the relevant health personnel worked for almost two
weeks before they detected the likely cause of the neurotoxicity
exemplified by sudden blindness and correlated their findings with the
toxicants in the blood, urine and the local gin samples.

Special Labour Day
FEWER speeches could be hollower than the ones that would be made
nationwide to mark Workers' Day, today. Speeches are traditional,
their contents remain traditionally empty, especially during
transitions, as we are witnessing. Millions of jobs have vanished with
the turbulent economy, globally, but particularly in our economy that
depends mainly on crude oil exports.
Workers' agitations have moved from conditions of service to pleading
for their pittance to be paid regularly, a vain hope in most private
organisations. Governments are worse culprits. Unpaid workers'
remunerations, in some States run into months.
Hundreds of thousands of workers would gather at venues across
Nigeria, to make fiery speeches about dearth of jobs, sing solidarity
tunes, lament shrinking welfare of the employed, and preach the
importance of labour. If governments remember the day, their officials
would be around to placate labour, delve into routine statistics about
job creation. Everybody heads home, until next year's speeches.
Things are getting worse. Government policies, poor security, and the
ubiquitous challenges from electricity supply, lower Nigeria's
attraction to investors. The rise in unemployment, rated as high as 50
per cent, according to some statistics, is evidence of the impact of
policies that emphasise the welfare of politicians and top government
officials, over development of infrastructure that would enhance job
creation.
Some who marched at last year's rallies are now jobless. Unemployment
statistics are worse for youth with thousands of university graduates
jobless, some more than five years after graduation. More join the
queue with every graduation ceremony.
Hardly is there a part of the country without a strike over workers'
welfare. A month hardly passes without a union or the other being on
strike. Governments ignore strikes, for months. It does not matter
whether they are by lecturers or doctors.
We have waited for three years for the 11 million jobs Minister of
Trade and Investment Mr. Olusegun Aganga promised by 2012. His
statistics came from the presumptuous calculation that each of
Nigeria's 11 million medium and small-scale industries would create at
least a job each, immediately, we have 11 million jobs.
Nigerians know the jobs did not materialise even if the only
explanation could be the discernible poor supply of electricity.
Improvement in electricity and other infrastructure that could help in
creating jobs appears distant. Instead of a review of progress made on
the key issues that affected labour last year, today's rallies would
be grounds for more promises, lamentations, and possibly optimism
since new governments are weeks away.
Strikes, agitations over unpaid salaries, the teeming crowd of the
unemployed, and relations between unemployment and rising security
issues, should make governments act quickly.
Promises have run their full course.

NASS Speakership: Dogara Rejects APC Zoning
>Photo: Yakubu Dogara| credits: http://dailypost.com.ng
One of the key contenders for the speakership of the 8th House of
Representatives, Mr. Yakubu Dogara, gave indications on Thursday that
he might not toe the zoning arrangement of the All Progressives
Congress if it would not guarantee "fairness and justice."
Dogara, who is from Bauchi State (North-East) is considered the main
challenger to House Minority Leader, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila (Lagos
State), in the race for the position.
For weeks, Gbajabiamila has been touted as the likely candidate for
the speakership under an understanding allegedly reached within the
APC's circles to zone the seat to the South-West.
The party also reportedly agreed behind the scenes to allow the
North-East, where Dogara hails from, to produce the Senate President.
But, on Thursday, Dogara came out clearly to say that the Senate and
the House were two different chambers and that a decision taken in
respect of one could not be imposed on the other.
The APC lawmaker spoke just as a new group, nicknamedThe Patriots,
emerged to demand that the candidate for the speakership must pass an
"integrity test" as against an individual emerging on the basis of
party zoning arrangement.
Dogara described the North-East as the poorest geo-political zone in
the country that required the backing of other zones in the sharing of
political offices.
He also stated that the reported prospect of the zone producing the
senate president did not in any way affect his aspiration.
He addressed a news conference where he said, "We represent the
aspirations of a zone that is the poorest in the country.
"There are candidates from other zones that already hold leadership
positions in the APC, yet they are running for the position of
Speaker. Why are questions not being asked in their own case?"
Dogara admitted that the APC must be passing through a difficult
period in taking a position on the issue, but he advised the party to
be guided aright so as not to hurt the feelings of members.
At least 22 members, including Peoples Democratic Party lawmakers,
backed Dogara on Thursday as he spoke.
Among them were Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs,
Mr. Zakari Mohammed (Kwara APC); Chairman, House Committee on
Aviation, Mrs. Nkiruka Onyejeocha (Abia PDP); Adams Jagaba (Kaduna
APC); Mr. Emmanuel Ekon (Akwa Ibom PDP); Binta Maigeri (Gombe PDP);
Mr. Ezikiel Adaji (Benue PDP); Mr. Abubakar Kannike (Kwara APC); Mr.
Linus Okorie (Ebonyi PDP); and Mr. Herman Hembe (Benue APC).
Dogara, a lawyer and third-timer, said his reason for joining the race
was because "Change", the APC's slogan, to him, meant "simply to
work."
On its part,The Patriots, at its inaugural news briefing on Thursday,
described itself as a "bi partisan legislative interest group" that
was out to ensure that the candidate for the office was the very best
among lawmakers.
The group also clarified that it was not out to support imposition of
candidates by forces outside the National Assembly, but would vote
based on the belief that the speaker passed an integrity test.
The convener of the group, Mr. Musa Serkin-Ada, said, "Our group
deliberately focuses on both the election processes and quality of
candidates, as opposed to business-as-usual groups that crowd around
individual candidates wishing to contest for speakership and other
positions.
"We are more interested in setting the parameters - principles,
vision, mission, quality and commitment - of those who aspire to lead
us, as opposed to supporting individuals in return for sharing the
spoils of office."
According to the group, one way of conducting the integrity test was
to organise an elaborate debate for the contestants to tell members
why they qualified to be speaker.
However, a member from Lagos State and Senator-elect, Mr. Solomon
Olamilekan, claimed that Gbajabiamila already had close to "85 per
cent support" of members for the speakership.
Olamilekan also claimed that "over 200 members" attended a meeting
with Gbajabiamila on Wednesday where they gave him their full backing.
The Patriotsclaimed that it had members from APC, PDP, All
Progressives Grand Alliance, Labour Party and Accord in its folds.

Heartland Beat Pillars To Go Top
Heartland of Owerri on Wednesday defeated last season's champions of
the Nigeria Professional Football League, Kano Pillars, 1-0 at the Dan
Anyiam Stadium, Owerri, to go top of the Globacom Premier League table
at the end of the sixth week.
The match, which was meant to be played on the first day of the
season, was shifted to Wednesday because of the attack suffered by
Pillars on their way to Owerri a few days to the start of the season.
A lone goal from the penalty spot by Bright Ejike in the 65th minute
ensured that Heartland have 12 points from six matches - one higher
than Giwa and Enyimba, who sit second and third respectively separated
by goal differences.
The game started with the home side forcing the visitors to their half
of the field of play and by the end of the first half, Heartland was
the closest to scoring as evidenced by the seven shots on goals
recorded against Pillars' three.
The hosts also had eight corners in the first half alone against none
played by the visitors while Pillars committed more fouls - 13 -
against Heartland's seven.
The second half saw the Owerri side coming out as they did in the
first but Pillars maintained their defensive cool till the 65th minute
when Adamu Hassan blocked a header with his hand and the referee
awarded Heartland a penalty, which Ejike converted.
Efforts by the champions to equalise were thwarted. Pillars however
remain 11th in the table with nine and a game in hand.

With IVF, It's Not Too Late To Have A Baby
In vitro fertilisation, a method of conception for couples that cannot
have their own babies, is becoming increasingly popular nowadays. So
far, over one million babies have been conceived through the test tube
method globally.
Even in Nigeria, where many couples who have fertility challenges are
yet to access IVF, over 40,000 babies have been born through the
procedure.
Infertility among women and men is on the rise, hence the growing
popularity of this procedure.
For instance, Patricia Jibor had given up on all hopes of ever having
her own baby, what with the verdict from her doctors that it would be
a miracle if she ever conceives.
Why did the doctors give a harsh judgment? Jibor had two ectopic
pregnancies that ruptured her fallopian tubes.
The fallopian tube, according to the medical dictionary, is the tube
that carries an egg from the ovary to the uterus (womb). Jibor says
after the physician's diagnosis, she waited and hoped for seven years
before she sought help for her situation.
She said, "The first time I conceived, it was an ectopic pregnancy
which ruptured the first fallopian tube. Two years after, I got
pregnant again, it was another ectopic pregnancy which ruptured the
second tube.
"My doctor then told me it would be impossible for me to get pregnant,
because the tubes that should carry fertilised eggs from the ovaries
to the womb have been destroyed. The import of the diagnosis didn't
sink till seven years later when I had yet to conceive."
With many impossibilities becoming possible with science, Jibor has
now given birth to a baby girl through an assisted reproduction
technology known as In Vitro Fertilisation at the Bridge Clinic in
Lagos.
Jibor told our correspondent at the 16th Anniversary of Kids born
through IVF at the clinic on Saturday that, indeed, science has
brought to her a bundle of joy against all odds.
"After the first examination, my doctor told me I had fibroid, and he
did an operation to take it out. I had a round of IVF that failed, but
I didn't give up. Despite all the challenges, I did another round."
After the second round of IVF at the clinic, Jibor conceived and
delivered a baby girl. The elated mother advises couples with
infertility challenges to always seek solutions, instead of waiting
until it's too late.
She urges childless couples to treat fertility challenges as medical
problems instead of chasing other ventures that would only cause them
heartaches and put unnecessary strain on the family.
Fertility experts agree with the mother. They say that with recent
advancements in medicine, fertility-challenged couples can still
achieve conception.
Consultant Gynaecologist at the Bridge Clinic, Dr. Tayo Abiara, notes
that infertility is a common problem and couples should not be ashamed
to seek medical solutions as early as possible.
According to her, at least one in every four to nine couples suffer
from infertility in Sub-Saharan Africa.
She says, "A couple is said to be infertile when there is difficulty
with conception despite regular unprotected sexual intercourse of at
least 12-month duration.
"The causes include fallopian tube damage, ovarian problems, uterine
anomalies and more commonly, sperm problems."
Abiara says couples must not delay medical diagnosis for their
problem, as the chances of a woman achieving conception either
naturally or through the IVF and other assisted reproductive
procedures reduce as she grows older.
According to her, the chances of a woman having a baby through the IVF
after age 50 are between zero and 50 per cent. And due to cultural
beliefs associated with infertility in Nigeria, most women who need it
do not access it early and when they do, they often come late to the
hospital.
She says, "Don't play into the hands of religious leaders, traditional
birth attendants and other quacks that end up prolonging the delay and
may even compound your problems when you don't come early."
Abiara recommends that childless couples who need IVF to conceive
should take it as a solution, and not just another option.
The specialist, however, warns that they should watch out for
unqualified and untrained experts who have dabbled into IVF services
to exploit desperate couples.
She advises couples to undergo such procedures in hospitals with
specialists in this field who, in addition to knowledge, will have

system in the hospital to ensure that risks in the mother and child
are well managed, so that you can have a healthy mother and baby.

have their own babies, is becoming increasingly popular nowadays. So
far, over one million babies have been conceived through the test tube
method globally.
She advises couples to undergo such procedures in hospitals with
specialists in this field who, in addition to knowledge, will have
state-of-the-art medical equipment and facilities, which, she adds,
could determine the success of an IVF procedure.
Abiara states, "Couples must look out for the quality management
system in the hospital to ensure that risks in the mother and child
are well managed, so that you can have a healthy mother and baby.
"Make sure they are experienced and well trained hands who will

Elected PDP Lagos Lawmakers Vow Not To Defect
The eight members of the Peoples Democratic Party that won elections
into the Lagos State House of Assembly have vowed not to defect to the
All Progressives Congress which has 32 members in the incoming 8th
Lagos Assembly.
The PDP members said this after receiving their Certificates of Return
from the Independent National Electoral Commission in Lagos on
Wednesday.
Mr. Dipo Olorunrinu, who spoke on behalf of the PDP members, said the
eight of them would work harmoniously with their APC counterparts.
Olorunrinu, who will represent Amuwo Odofin constituency 1, said they
would put the people of Lagos first in everything.
He said, "When we resume at the House, we will not be looking at party
(politics) because we are looking at the general interest of the
people of Lagos because it is paramount to us. We will be looking at
the success of Lagos as a whole.
"On behalf of the PDP, I can tell you that we are too many to scatter
and the rumour about us defecting remains a rumour. Of course you
know, politics is all about rumours."
Another PDP member, Mr. Oluwa Fatai, who will represent
Ajeromi/Ifelodun constituency 2, said he would sponsor several bills
that would benefit his constituents.

Okorocha, 27 Imo Assembly Members Elect Get INEC Certificates Of Return
Gov. Rochas Okorocha of Imo and 27 members-elect for the State House
of Assembly were on Thursday presented with their Certificates of
Return by INEC.
Mrs Gladys Nwafor, INEC National Commissioner representing Imo,
Anambra and Ebonyi states presented the certificates to the
recipients.
In her remark at the occasion, Nwafor urged the successful politicians
to keep their promises to the electorate.
She said that with the reform being undertaken by the commission,
those who fail to deliver would find it difficult to win elections in
the future.
She said the commission was happy to conclude the Imo elections after
the re-run exercise, adding that Imo was one of the flash points where
the commission had expressed fears of possible violence.
The commissioner urged the governor to ensure he deliver on his
promises to carry everybody along.
She said the commission would ensure that future elections in the
country were better than the 2015 polls.
Responding on behalf of the other recipients, Okorocha thanked INEC
for concluding the Imo elections and declaring him winner.
He urged the commission to ensure that those apprehended for electoral
offences were brought to justice to enhance the credibility of future
elections to be conducted by INEC.
Okorocha used the occasion to commend Imo people for their support and
assured them that he would do his best to deliver quality service to
the state.

Buhari May Soon Wish He Did Not Win 2015 Presidential Polls -- Ben Bruce
>PHOTO: THISDAY GUEST COLUMNIST: BEN MURRAY BRUCE
Now that Major General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) has been chosen by the
Nigerian people, it is my duty as a patriotic Nigerian to help him
succeed even though my candidate was President Goodluck Jonathan, a
man to whom I will always be loyal and appreciative.
General Buhari is about to mount the saddle and I for one am in a very
good position to tell him some home truths because as a senator-elect,
I have a very fulfilling job awaiting me and I do not need a job or
favours from Buhari so I do not have to play nice.
Looking at the personalities he has appointed to his transition
council, I am wont to believe that General Buhari needs to expand his
circle of friends and advisers.
As a military strategist, the president-elect must be familiar with
the principle that the people you use in subduing an opponent are not
necessarily the same persons you will need in rebuilding the
territories you took. I may be using military terms, but I am sure
General Buhari is aware that politics is war by other means and
therefore many of the rules of war and peace apply to politics.
The General will be best served if he thinks of what is best for
Nigeria rather than what is best for his party, the All Progressive
Congress (APC), and its chieftains.
He must remember that in Nigeria's subjective politics, it was his
person that the people voted for not his party and he should therefore
serve the people the dish they are angling for.
And what are the expectations of Nigerians from General Buhari?
Definitely not business as usual.
The president-elect ran on a promise of change and while that change
was not really defined by its chanters, Nigerians defined it as a
change in their situation.
To borrow from the famously potent prayers of Mountain of Fire and
Miracle members, the Nigerian masses defined change as a situation
where wealth and power must change hands from the elite to the masses
by fire by force and they see General Buhari as the enforcer angel
that will bring about this change.
With this type of expectation, Buhari's honeymoon period with
Nigerians will not last very long if he does not take drastic steps to
adjust Nigeria's economy to the realities of falling oil prices and a
dearth of buyers for the Bonny Light Sweet Crude.
To put things into perspective, when the United States started buying
less and less of Nigeria's oil, we looked to China as an alternative
buyer of oil but it has since come to light that whereas America spent
$101 billion on clean energy between 2012-13, China spent $125 billion
within the same time frame.
The above data should alert Nigeria and other nations that look to
China for oil markets to the fact that China is even ahead of the West
in the search for alternative to fossil fuels as a source of energy.
Buhari may wish he did not win the 2015 elections when the reality of
our economic situation sets in.
In his December 2014 Channels Television interview, Buhari said he was
going to "stabilise the oil market". The General will learn soon
enough that today's oil market is a buyers' market.
And the General's choices are limited because he cannot (unless he is
extraordinarily brave and politically callous) do the obvious and sack
civil servants. Yes, he will eventually have to reduce the over
bloated federal civil service, but before he can do that, he has to
build up political capital by reducing the overhead of the Executive
and persuade the Legislature to follow suit.
Austerity measures must start from Aso Rock. This means that luxurious
multi car convoys must be reduced. The presidential air fleet has to
go, by way of being auctioned off or sold to local airlines. Estacode
allowances must be slashed and the president's entourages should be
lean while non-essential foreign travels should be banned.
The president-elect should not underestimate the big difference these
small changes can make and their capacity to buy him enough
credibility with the labour unions, the kind of credibility that will
see them accepting cuts in the federal workforce and reduction in pay
and entitlements.
A small change like flying commercial instead of by private jet saved
Britain a whopping £200,000 when the thrifty British Prime Minister,
David Cameron, flew to America to meet President Barack Obama on a
regular BA flight.
Nigeria is in for very desperate times if we do not tighten our belts
while our major foreign exchange earner is facing global challenges.
Russia, a nation that many will say is more prepared than Nigeria for
the shocks occasioned by the drop in the price of oil devalued its
currency by 11 per cent in just one day.

S'East APC Split Over Post Of Secretary Of The Federation
Members of the All Progressives Congress, APC who are of Igbo origins
are divided over who becomes the next secretary to the government of
the federation, SGF, as the fight for the post has split them into
three bitterly divided camps.
Under Nigeria's complex zoning arrangement, the SGF has been zoned to
the Igbo-speaking southeast geo-political zone and the race has begun
to find a suitable candidate to fill the spot.
After several meeting held by the APC's southeast caucus in Abuja it
has been unable to reach an agreement on the nominees to be submitted
for the positions of SGF and ministerial positions, Nigerian Newswatch
can report.
Yesterday, the caucus met again at the Imo State governor's lodge in
Abuja at the instance of Governor Rochas Okorocha but the meeting
ended in stalemate.
A party source at the meeting said they were unable to reach agreement
because the three top contenders Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, Senator Chris Ngige
and the current secretary to Imo State government, Professor Anthony
Anwuka failed to yield ground for one another.
He added: "The leaders met to consider nominee for the post of the SGF
which has been ceded to the zone. However, the meeting was divided on
whether to forward one name or the three names but later resolved to
send three names to the president-elect to decide whom to choose."

I Am Disappointed In Buhari -- Helen Paul
Read her piece as published on The Trent below:
The comedian and mother of two Helen Paul, writes down her views and
disappointment in President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari recent statement
that he cannot guarantee the safe return of the kidnapped Chibok
girls..
Hmmm... it's one year and some days now since the Chibok girls have been
missing. Yet, the days are still counting because we have no clue
about their whereabouts.
This is a very sad development indeed. No doubt, it was a
disappointment that the outgoing government failed to locate and
rescue the girls from the hands of their Boko Haram abductors.
As a mother, who knows what the pains of child labour and child
upbringing are all about, I heaved a sigh of relief when Muhammadu
Buhari emerged winner of the presidential election. It was not because
I like him more than Jonathan, but because I listened to one of his
campaigns, where he promised to bring back the girls if elected into
office.
Perhaps, Nigerians elected him on that premise.
I feel that, at least, it will be a great achievement for whoever
locates and brings back the girls to their respective families. In
fact, whoever achieves that will be celebrated as a hero all over the
world. But then, I have seen another reason to believe that all
politicians are the same.
Their modus operandi may only be different. A few days ago, exactly
when it clocked one year that the girls had been missing, Buhari broke
my heart, just like that of other Nigerians when he said his
government could not promise to bring back the girls! I felt really
devastated because that comment was a sharp contrast to the promises
he made to all Nigerians and the world at large during his campaigns.
Honestly, I try not to be disappointed because you can always expect
anything from Nigerians, politicians in particular. They can promise
heaven on earth during campaigns, but the moment they get to power,
they promptly renege on their promises. Such is life in this part of
the world where we find ourselves.
I tried to put myself in the shoes of the parents, relatives and
neighbours of the missing girls, who, perhaps, solicited votes for the
retired General after hearing his campaign promise that he would bring
back the girls. How will they feel now hearing him say something to
the contrary?
There is an adage in Yoruba that says ' omo eni ku san ju omo eni sonu
lo,' meaning that it is better for someone's child to die than to be
missing. I can imagine the different thoughts and imaginations that
would have saddled the minds of those girls' parents. If the girls are
dead (which I don't pray for anyway), the parents will mourn for
sometime and recover, but that they are missing is another experience
entirely.

Boko Haram Hostages Were Kept In 'Severe And Inhuman Conditions' -- Military
Boko Haram hostages were held in atrocious conditions in the group's
Sambisa Forest stronghold, Nigeria's military said on Thursday after
nearly 500 women and girls were released this week.
"Whoever they may be, the important thing is that Nigerians held
captive under very severe and inhuman conditions have been freed by
our gallant troops," defence spokesman Chris Olukolade said.
He told reporters in Abuja the army would "comprehensively" clean out
the forest, adding: "There is great hope for the recovery of more
hostages of the terrorists."
Some 200 girls and 93 women were freed from camps within the former
colonial era game reserve on Tuesday while the army said on Thursday
that about 160 more hostages had been rescued.
The rescues raised hopes for the liberation of 219 girls snatched from
their school in the Borno state town of Chibok on April 14 last year,
which caused global outrage.
Nigeria's military released a series of photographs purporting to show
some of the rescued women and children in an undisclosed location,
huddled on the ground watched over by soldiers.
One very young child pictured appeared to be in a state of malnutrition.
Olukolade said air force jets had been bombarding the forest, which he
described as Boko Haram's "last bastion" in the northeast after being
pushed out of captured towns.
He told a news conference that in the last few days, more than 13
camps had been captured. Equipment such as armoured personnel
carriers, pick-up trucks and weapons were seized.
"Several" field commanders and foot soldiers were killed, he added,
without specifying numbers, while one soldier was also killed and 10
wounded.
"The true identity of some of the rescued women and girls are yet to
be ascertained," said Olukolade.
"At the moment, what is uppermost and of priority is their movement to
a conducive place where they are now undergoing thorough profiling to
verify their true identity, where they come from, how they found
themselves in the forest, etc.
"Additional numbers of persons are still being recovered from the
forest. Until such comprehensive profiling is done, nobody can confirm
whether they are among the Chibok girls or not."

Defecting PDP Members Will Come Back On Empty Stomach -- Jonathan
President Goodluck Jonathan,Thursday, called on members of the Peoples
Democratic Party, PDP, to come together to build a stronger party that
would regain power in future elections.
He spoke at the presiddential Villa while receiving the PDP
Presidential Campaign Organization's (PCO) report from its Director
General, Ahmadu Ali.
While warning members of the party who are defecting to other parties
that they would be worse off, President Jonathan noted that despite
losing the presidential, the PDP still remains a formidable party.
He said though he did not consult anybody before calling General
Buhari to concede defeat, the president said he did so on behalf of
all members of the party.
"I still believe though we have lost presidential elections, some
national assembly elections, governorship elections, especially in the
north, PDP is still the dominant party. Let us not judge PDP by the
result of the presidential elections."
"Our duty is to go back and identify areas of challenges so that the
party will come up strong and play the roleas a very strong party. PDP
is still the most organized party, is still the party that is not
owned by anybody, is still the party that whatever you are you can get
to any level with your competences and so on."
"So I encourage members of our party to remain loyal to the party, not
to be so disillusioned because we lost presidential election and
decide to go where they think they will fill their stomachs or
something. Is not easy I have been here for five years plus, you
hardly satisfy even 15 perent of those who work for you.
"Those people running and those already cross-carpeting, they will
come back on an empty stomach because they will touch the primary
members of their party, before they get to you, they know you are
coming because you are hungry, before it will get to you the food will
be gone."
While stressing that the PDP remains a formidable party, president
Jonathan insinuated that even in those areas thatb "If you look at the
result, the difference is just 2.5 million votes and if you look at
the areas where it is perceived that PDP scored so low, PDP couldn't
have gotten those kinds of scores but the elections are over, the
country first."
"It is not as if Jonathan alone made the sacrifice it's all of us. I
made the pronouncement but some of us are paying the prize. Some
people pay more prize than I do, I know how some of you are already
being persecuted and the kind of situation facing you. The key thing
is that we must continue to unite, as a party we must continue to work
hard so that as we go into subsequent elections 2019, 2023 and so on
and so forth, PDP will continue to come up strong. Even in the
interest of the nation, we need PDP." He said.

FG Warns Buhari Against Running Parallel Govt
The Federal Government has warned the President-elect, Muhammadu
Buhari, against utterances and actions capable of portraying him as
running a parallel government at a time President Goodluck Jonathan is
still fully in charge.
The Minister of National Planning, Abubakar Sulaiman, disclosed this
at the end of the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting in Abuja on
Wednesday.
Sulaiman told State House correspondents that FEC considered the state
of the transition programme and took exception to some utterances and
terms of reference of the committee set up by Buhari.
The President-elect inaugurated a 19-member committee with a charge
to members not to engage in a witch-hunt or fault finding.
One of the assignments of the Buhari transition committee is to review
and make preliminary assessment of the balance sheet of the Federal
Government with particular emphasis on the status of assets and
liabilities; cash flow position and the quantum of domestic and
external debts.
But Sulaiman, who is the chairman of the Technical Subcommittee of the
outgoing government's transition committee, said such utterances by
Buhari and his team were suggestive that the current government was
either being stampeded or intimidated.
He said, "We did receive from the incoming government's transition
committee some terms of reference which we looked at critically and
council did agree that the President remains the current head of
government of this country.
"The incoming government should avoid creating a parallel government
while the government is still on.
"We take exception to some utterances and some of the terms of
reference that look as if the current government is being stampeded or
intimidated.
"Council frowned on most of the statements, most of the provocations
and council members are advised to work in line with the terms of
reference of the current government.
"Council members are also told that the terms of reference as
formatted by our transition committee should be strictly complied
with.
"When the incoming government takes over government, they can come out
with their programmes; they can come out with their own agenda and
they can decide to come out with policies in the way they feel like.
"This government remains resolute to the various programmes and
projects it is pursuing and it will continue to do that until the
morning of May 29."
When asked to mention some of the terms of reference of the incoming
government's transition committee that the outgoing government felt
uncomfortable with, Sulaiman asked journalists to go and do their
investigation.
He warned that Jonathan's "magnanimity should not be taken as a sign
of cowardice."
The minister said the President and the council members "enjoined
Nigerians to see the olive branch extended to Nigerians and the
international community as a way of keeping this country intact and as
a way of ensuring peace in Nigeria.
"As such, whatever the outcome of the elections, what is important is
Nigeria's national interest. And that national interest should be
protected, enhanced and promoted at whatever level we are.
"These are issues that bordered on transition programme discussed in council."
He said while the council enjoined its members to be steadfast,
Jonathan also asked them to come out with projects to be inaugurated.
He added that the President asked government officials to continue to
perform their duties without fear and intimidation.
The minister further quoted Jonathan as saying that civil servants
should see his government as the current government and avoid doing
anything capable of rocking the boat.
Sulaiman disclosed that Vice-President Namadi Sambo, who heads
Jonathan's transition committee had a robust discussion with the
chairman of the Buhari's transition committee, Ahmed Joda, on Tuesday.
He also said that as of Tuesday, almost all the Ministries,
Departments and Agencies that were directed to submit briefs and hand-
over notes to the Sambo-led committee had complied, except for one or
two ministries.
The minister said the committee was currently in possession of the
executive summaries of all the MDAs handover notes and the entire
handover notes from almost all the MDAs.
"The transition process is on course in terms of handover notes and
briefs, we have covered almost 80 per cent of our assignments," he
said.
Nothing wrong with our terms of reference
A member of the Buhari transition committee, Lai Mohammed, however
dismissed the allegations of sinister motive in the terms of
reference.
Mohammed expressed surprise at the turn of events, saying, "What did
they expect us to do? Did they expect us to take the handover notes
without asking questions?

Anglican Diocese Of Owerri Boils Again, As Congregation Locks Out Priest
Just as the crisis rocking St Marks Anglican Church, Orogwe, Owerri,
West LGA, Imo State has remained unresolved till date, another inferno
is now engulfing St Peters Anglican church, Irete in the same Diocese.
A source from the church which pleaded for anonymity said the crisis
climaxed last Sunday 19th April when a section of the congregation
decided to lock out the vicar incharge Rev Kenneth Chikere and his
curate Rev Tim Ashama on account of long bottled up anger which
bordered on greed, embezzlement and regular cursing of the
congregation.
The source said that although the plan to lock up the church leaked at
the planning stage, the Bishop Cyril Okorocha's intervention could not
stop the aggrieved church members as they shunned the Bishop
invitation for dialogue.
One of the aggrieved members of the church told this paper that the
target of the exercise was Rev Chikere, a native of Uratta in Owerri
North LGA recalling that the said Priest had similar history in his
last station Ohaohia Mbieri.
The worried member said the sending of the clerical synod secretary to
the church last Sunday to mediate is just to stop the flame because
according to him, "the fire is still smoldering".
However, some Priests who spoke to Trumpeta on the crisis doubted the
involvement of Rev Chikere in what they called dirty deals of greed,
embezzlement and arrogance adding that if anything the Rev Chikere has
enough to eat.
In another development, of feelers from St Marks Anglican church,
Orogwe is anything to go by, the church community may embark upon an
action which may not be palatable because of the absence of a resident
Priest.
A concerned church member who wondered why Bishop Okorocha does not
want to post them a resident Priest since the last Priest and his
curate were sacked, said the church community is tired of remaining,
as he put it, "Priestless" and warned that the present storm that is
gathering may be allowed to burst.
