Concern over the spread of the Ebola virus has caused the cancellation
of an African Cup of Nations football match.
The Seychelles was due to host Sierra Leone in a qualifying game on
Saturday, but the tiny island nation's ministries of health and
immigration prevented the visiting players from entering the country.
At least 525 cases of Ebola have been reported in Sierra Leone since
March, 224 of which have been fatal.
Seychelles, which was trailing 2-0 after losing the away leg of the
second-round qualifier in Sierra Leone on July 19, has forfeited both
the tie and its hopes of reaching next year's tournament finals.
Sierra Leone players were on Friday reportedly prevented from boarding
a plane at Kenya's Nairobi Airport that would have taken them to the
Seychelles.

African Leaders To Be Screened For Ebola At US-Africa Summit In Washington
President Barack Obama said some participants at the US-Africa summit
taking place in Washington between Monday and Wednesday next week
would be screened for exposure to the deadly Ebola virus.
"We are taking the appropriate precautions," Obama said.
"Folks who are from these countries that have even a marginal risk, or
an infinitesimal risk of having been exposed in some fashion, we're
making sure we're doing screening."
The president also said the American Federal Centers for Disease
Control are working with international health organizations to provide
assistance to the affected countries.
Two of the 45 African leaders expected to attend the US-Africa Leaders
summit, President of Liberia, Mrs Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and her Sierra
Leonean counterpart, Mr Ernest Bai Koroma, whose countries are hit by
the deadly virus have cancelled their trip to the US.
Four leaders including Robert Mugabe and Sudanese President Omar
al-Bashir were however not invited, because of US sanctions on them.
Eritrean President Isaias Afewerki and the Central African Republic's
President Catherine Samba-Panza were left out because of African Union
(AU) concerns.

Girl Stabbed Her Mum To Death Because She Wanted Her To Have An Abortion
A teenage girl has been charged with the death of her mother's murder.
The mother's dead body was found in the trunk of her car. Alyssa
Barrett, who is only seventeen years old was charged with murder and
robbery in the death of her mother DeCarol Deloney-Cain. Her mother
was only fifty-four years old. Her daughter's boyfriend was already
arrested and charged, earlier in July.
The Chicago Tribune reports authorities found the dead body of
DeCarol,a seasoned flight attendant for United Airlines, in the trunk
of her vehicle on the 7th of July in Gary, Indiana.
Investigators say Alyssa plotted to have her mother killed because she
wanted her to have an abortion. According to a criminal complaint, her
mother was whopped and stabbed over and over again. Her daughter's
boyfriend took the entire blame for the murder. Her mother's body was
carefully wrapped in garbage bags before being thrown in the trunk of
her car.
Alyssa had a very unstable relationship with her mom, according to
detectives. Alyssa's boyfriend admitted to police that he committed
the murder after DeCarol wanted his baby to be aborted, which is the
probable cause. Police went searching for her body four days after
DeCarol was supposed to board a flight. Alyssa Barrett was telling
people her mother had flown away to China.
An affidavit mentioned that two friends of the couple also robbed
Deloney-Cain before she was murdered. Their names have not been
released to the public. Both Barrett and her boyfriend are currently
being held without bond.

Flight carrying the first of two US Ebola patients evacuated from West Africa lands in the United States
The Ebola outbreak in West Africa is spreading faster than efforts to
control it, World Health Organization (WHO) head Margaret Chan has
said.
She told a summit of regional leaders that failure to contain Ebola
could be "catastrophic" in terms of lives lost.
But she said the virus, which has claimed 728 lives in Guinea, Liberia
and Sierra Leone since February, could be stopped if well managed.
Ebola kills up to 90% of those infected.
It spreads by contact with infected blood, bodily fluids, organs - or
contaminated environments. Patients have a better chance of survival
if they receive early treatment.
Initial flu-like symptoms can lead to external haemorrhaging from the
eyes and gums, and internal bleeding that can lead to organ failure.
A US relief agency is repatriatingtwo of its American staff who have
contracted the virus in Liberia.
A flight carrying the first of the patients - Dr Kent Brantly - landed
at and US Air Force base in Georgia at about 16:00 GMT.
Hundreds of US Peace Corps volunteers have already been evacuated from
the West African countries.
Separately, US President Barack Obama announced that delegates from
affected countries attending a US-Africa conference in Washington next
week would be screened.
"Folks who are coming from these countries that have even a marginal
risk, or an infinitesimal risk of having been exposed in some fashion,
we're making sure we're doing screening," he said.
Friday's summit should provide the kind of international co-operation
needed to fight Ebola but the battle against the virus will be won or
lost at the local level. An over-attentive family member, a careless
moment while burying a victim, a slip-up by medical staff coping with
stress and heat - a single small mistake in basic hygiene can allow
the virus to slip from one human host to another.
The basic techniques for stopping Ebola are well known. The problem is
applying them. Since the virus was first identified in 1976, there
have been dozens of outbreaks and all of them have been contained.
Experts point to these successes as evidence that this latest threat
can be overcome too.
But working against them are suspicions among local people and the
unavoidable fact that this is an extremely poor part of the world,
much of it still reeling from conflict. Deploying the right equipment
in properly trained hands is always going to be a struggle, one that
is now extremely urgent.

China factory explosion in Jiangsu 'kills at least 68'
An explosion at a factory in eastern China has killed at least 68
people, according to Chinese state media.
Almost 200 people were injured in the blast in Kunshan, a city in the
eastern province of Jiangsu, China's official Xinhua news agency said.
Pictures posted online showed people with burns sitting on the ground
outside a factory complex from which black smoke was billowing.
Xinhua said five company employees had been detained.
The factory belonged to the Kunshan Zhongrong Metal Products company.
The company manufactures car parts and employs about 450 workers. Its
clients include US giant General Motors, CCTV reported.
State media reports say that explosion took place inside a wheel hub
polishing workshop and that 264 workers were at the site at the time
of the explosion.
Xinhua said 44 people had died immediately and the total of injured
stood at 187.
Initial reports suggested the explosion, which was heard several
kilometres away, occurred when a flame was lit in a dust-filled room.
Glass was shattered up to 500 metres away.
Kunshan is about an hour's drive from Shanghai, where some of the
injured were taken for treatment. Others were taken to Suzhou.
One doctor on the Weibo microblog account of CCTV said: "In my 20
years of work, I've never seen so many patients with burns on over 80%
of their bodies."
Industrial accidents are relatively common in China, says the BBC's
John Sudworth in Shanghai, although figures show safety in some
industries has been improving in recent years.
Some 119 people died in a fire at a poultry plant in northern Jilin
province in June last year.

Ebola: The rich also cry
Nigerians are currently restless over recent reports of a Liberian who
died of the dreaded Ebola Virus in a Lagos hospital last week.
Panic-stricken people have been sending messages out on how to avoid
the virus.
What may not be known to many is that ordinary Nigerians are not alone
in the fear of Ebola Virus. Even ministers are now weary of who they
relate with in order not to contract the disease.
This played out in the Villa on Wednesday. At the end of the weekly
Federal Executive Council meeting, as they found their way out of the
Villa, a minister from the South East shook hands with one of the
Special Advisers to the President. Suddenly, the minister stopped on
his track, withdrew his hand and demanded to know from the
presidential aide whether he had not visited Liberia lately. Both of
them laughed over the joke.
But a beautiful female minister from the South South took her own joke
farther when, armed with a liquid material, she insisted that whoever
wanted to shake her must be ready to apply the substance on his or her
palm first. It was difficult to confirm what the material was.
It would have been interesting to see if she would have insisted that
the President too apply the substance if he had approached her for a
handshake that day.

How to complain using Twitter
Every year customers make millions of complaints. About holidays,
mobile phones, energy bills, bank accounts, credit cards, or things we
have bought that are not quite what we paid for.
People who receive shoddy service from service-oriented companies are
now cultivating the habit of taking to Twitter to lodge complaints.
Such complaints on the micro-blogging service, can garner instant
results.
Most firms have established procedures for dealing with complaints -
often involving an expensive, time-consuming and frustrating phone
call. But there may be a short cut: Twitter.
Judging by the results of people on Twitter complaining using tweets
can be swift and effective.
Not all firms watch Twitter feeds well. Other tweeps have told me they
had got no better response tweeting than by other means.
But it is always worth trying, especially with firms that are aware of
a poor public image like energy companies and banks, those that care
about their reputation and, of course, those that have a Twitter feed
for customer complaints And because Twitter is instant, the teams that
deal with the responses want an instant answer.
Twitter is effective because, unlike email, phones, and letters, it is
public. Half a billion people around the world could see your tweet --
and 15 million of them are in the UK.
The search facility means that anyone researching a firm can find all
the tweets mentioning it. And if the complaint strikes a chord with
others it will be retweeted and could go viral!
When you complain using Twitter follow these five golden rules:
Keep it specific:Find and use the firm's @name -- many have dedicated
customer twitterfeeds which twitter will find once you start typing
it.
Keep it brief:Explain your problem in 140 characters. It can be a
challenge. But the essence of it can always be boiled down. Resist
writing a string of tweets. One strong message is more likely to be
retweeted.
Keep it factual:Avoid abuse and irrelevant material. But be strong in
your complaint.
Keep it going:If you get no response make the lack of response your
next complaint!
Keep it public:Don't agree to divert to direct messaging. You might as
well email.
It is also useful to repeat your complaint to someone with a lot of
Twitter followers who may be influential. 'I am having a real problem
of yyy with @xxxxxx about zzz. What can I do?'
When writing the actual tweet, be sure to include the most shocking or
interesting bit of information. Since you only have 140 characters to
work with, you'll want to catch the attention of the company (and
anyone listening) right off the bat.
If you've got a particularly detailed story to tell, you might want to
write a blog post about it and link to it in your tweet. Just make
sure you put in the most eye-catching detail in the tweet itself so it
actually gets read.
You also have the option to tag other account in the tweet, in order
to raise the profile of the complaint. Think about who might be
interested in this story - prominent journalists, consumer advocacy
groups, local politicians. If you include one or two interested
parties, the company is more likely to respond to all of you.
And lastly, make sure you're monitoring your own @mentions folder to
see when the company responds. It doesn't do you any good to complain
and then not hear the response! And if you don't hear back in about 48
hours, you can send a reminder tweet that they still haven't replied
to your original tweet.
As more and more of us use Twitter to complain, it may become less
useful. But the fact it is public and has the potential to go viral
and embarrass the firm is a huge advantage over all other ways of
complaining.

I have not worn earrings for five years -Yvonne Nelson
Popular Ghanaian actress, Yvonne Nelson, tells Ademola Olonilua about
her fashion and style
How did you get into acting?
It is a funny story actually. Sometime ago, I went to buy food
somewhere close to where a movie audition was taking place. I had
placed my order earlier but the food was taking so long, so I decided
to wait in the car. When I was going back to take my order, a guy
named Abdul stopped me and asked if I had written down my name. I
didn't know what he was talking about, so he explained it was a movie
audition. I told him I came for something else. Van Vicker was also
there for the audition and when the guy saw me talking to Van, he
later got my number from him and called me. When I met him, he was on
set, then, he gave me a script and that was how I started acting.
What was your life ambition when you were much younger?
I was into music when I was young and I listened to a lot of songs
daily. I actually thought I would go into music. So, for me,
entertaining people started at an early age. In school, I was always
on stage whenever there was an event and everybody knew me as a
musician right from my primary school to secondary. When people saw me
at Miss Ghana pageant, they were surprised especially because I was
dressed like a girl. I was always on stage acting like a tomboy.
At what point did you stop being a tomboy and began acting like a girl?
I would say it was when I went for Miss Ghana pageant. I won the Best
Talent category with my rap when I was asked to showcase my talent. I
had to stop being a tomboy because we were always wearing shoes with
high heels and dresses; there was no choice for me because I had to
wear them. The grooming during the competition changed me.
What was your experience during the beauty pageant?
I was very young and still a teenager as of that time. I was still
writing exams to get into the university and it was very challenging
for me. I was the youngest among the contestants and it changed a lot
of things about me.
Who influenced you to go for the pageant?
My best friend, Karen Okata, convinced me. Somehow, people always
convince me to do some things. She told me she saw a competition on
the television about Miss Ghana audition and that I should go for it
instead of wasting my height. I declined initially because I was a
little chubby and slightly curvy. Eventually I went for it and I was
told to work on my shape, and that if I was lucky, they would audition
me during the zonal stage and if I passed, I would be among the final
20 girls for the main event. I decided to give it a try and I began
working on my diet, grooming myself by walking in shoes with high
heels.
How tall are you?
I am precisely 6 feet.
Does your height intimidate men around you?
A lot of people get intimidated even when I am shooting on set. Some
of my colleagues complain a lot about my height. Anytime I wear high
heeled shoes, it is like a problem because if I am being paired with
people I am taller than and I wear shoes with high heels, it makes
them uncomfortable. A lot of people get intimidated, guys get
intimidated.
What influences your style?
Nothing influences my style; I just wake up and wear anything. I have
a shop as well. My fans inspired me to open a shop. I have a lot of
clothes and I just pick any of them when going out. I know what looks
good on me, what complements my body and how to play around with what
I wear. I don't really follow trends. If I like the clothe and my
stomach does not look too big in it, why wouldn't I wear it? As far as
you are happy with how you look, that is the most important thing. The
way you look actually boosts your confidence level.
How come you do not have any tattoos or extra piercings on your body?
I don't even like wearing earrings. I haven't worn any earrings for
about five years. I can wear them in a movie but I'm not a fan. I
don't think it adds any extra beauty to a girl. I just don't like it,
it makes me feel uncomfortable and as if I'm overdressed. It makes my
face look busy and I don't like it. I like jewellery; I love wrist
watches and rings too. I do not have any tattoo mainly because of the
pain. I believe I have a beautiful skin, imagine how I always brag
about my legs and I put a tattoo on it, why would I do that? I would
not mind getting a tattoo, writing my mother's first name somewhere on
my body but it is just not my style. It is not something I think
about. I see it on people and some of them are really nice because it
is artistic.

her fashion and style

Exclusive breastfeeding protects babies from pneumonia, diarrhoea
The breast milk is the most nutritious food a mother can give her
newly born baby. It is also the best food for a growing infant.
Experts say that for the baby to get all the benefits inherent in it,
the mother must practise exclusive breastfeeding.
Consultant Paediatrician, Dr. Yeni Olarenwaju, defines exclusive
breastfeeding as the act of giving a baby only breast milk in the
first six months of life without adding any supplements , food or
liquids - not even water.
Even the World Health Organisation recommends that babies should be
exclusively breastfed for the first six months of life, after which
the mother can introduce appropriate complementary foods for the next
two years.
The WHO notes that exclusive breastfeeding is the single most
effective intervention for preventing child deaths. Yet, less than 40
per cent of infants under six months receive the benefits.
According to the global body, approximately 1.3 million deaths can be
prevented each year if at least 90 per cent of mothers practise
exclusive breast feeding.
Consultant Paediatrician, Dr. Bunmi Adeniyi, says that six months
exclusive breastfeeding is key to the survival of a child, as it helps
in boosting the baby's immunity level to fight diseases and
infections.
According to Adeniyi, the breast milk, especially the first thick
yellow milk called colostrum, contains anti-bacterial and anti-viral
agents and high levels of vitamin A that protect infants against
diseases. He notes that promoting exclusive breast feeding reduces the
incidence of killer diseases such as pneumonia, diarrhoea, jaundice
and other respiratory infections.
"Breast milk is a natural source of food for the baby and it is
important for the baby's growth. It also contains antibodies that
protect infants from bacteria, viruses and other childhood illnesses
such as diarrhoea and respiratory infections - diseases killing
children in Nigeria.
"It is a strategy that the nation must encourage mothers to adopt to
reduce the alarming infant mortality rates in Nigeria."
Adeniyi adds that the breast milk is the safest food for a newborn as
it has the right amount of energy, protein, fat, vitamins and other
nutrients which the baby needs to grow optimally in the first six
months.
He states," The body system of a baby in the first six months is most
susceptible to infection. Every other food you give them is foreign
apart from breast milk. The danger of introducing other foods is that
they may be contaminated, and you cannot verify the source. The only
safe and reliable source of food for infants is the breast milk. It
cannot be duplicated or counterfeited."
Many mothers worry about not giving their babies water while
breastfeeding. However, experts warn that this practice may compromise
the gains of breast feeding.
They note that they need not worry as 88 per cent of breast milk is
made up of water.
He explains, " Breast milk is already 88 per cent water, you need not
add more. It has all the nutrients that the baby needs in the first
six months of life. Studies show that healthy, exclusively breastfed
infants under six months old do not need additional fluids, even in
countries with extremely high temperatures and low humidity.
" Offering water before six months reduces their breast milk intake,
interferes with full absorption of breast milk nutrients, and
increases the risk of illness from contaminated water and feeding
bottles."
Olanrewaju adds that nutrients in the breast milk are essential for
the baby's brain development, especially in the first year.
Here are some health benefits for mothers who breast feed.
Lowers cancer risk
Women who breastfeed for over six months are less likely to develop
early breast cancer, than women who do not breastfeed - as long as
they do not smoke - a surgeon-led study suggests.
Emilio Gonzalez-Jimenez, PhD, of the University of Granada in Spain,
and his colleagues came to this position after analysing the medical
records of 504 women between 19 and 91 years of age who had been
treated for breast cancer at one of the city's hospitals.
Women who had not breastfed their babies were, on the average, found
to get breast cancer 10 years earlier than breastfeeding mothers.
The university team included a number of factors in their analysis -
age of breast cancer diagnosis, length of breastfeeding, family
history of cancer , alcohol consumption and smoking habits.
Jimenez says, "Breastfeeding for periods of over six months not only
provides children with numerous health benefits, but also protects the
mother from serious diseases such as breast cancer.

Varsities set irrelevant post-UTME questions and blame candidates for failing - Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, JAMB boss
The Registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Prof Dibu
Ojerinde, in this interview withADELANI ADEPEGBA sheds light on
controversies surrounding university admissions in the country
What informed the Computer-Based Test?
We believed it's one of the ways we can reduce examination
malpractices. The global trend now is the use of technology and we
felt we should not be left behind in Nigeria. On the other hand, the
issue of problems being encountered by the candidates in terms of
missing results, malpractices and things like that will be eliminated
totally. These are some of the reasons and in any case, we think also
that it would improve the technological know-how of our kids in this
country.
Did the board take into account the literacy level in the country
before adopting the CBT?
Our design is such that if you can use a mobile handset, you can do
our exams; you can do the CBT if you can read ABCD. When the answers
come up for you, and you know that the answer is A or B or C or D, you
punch and that is it. You don't even need to use the mouse except you
know how to use it. If you don't know how to use it, you don't need
to. The cursor goes up to your right then, to your left, that is all
and we give them maximum of 15 minutes orientation and before you know
it, they are coping. So, that is our experience so far and it's been
very wonderful.
What are the measures and arrangements you have in place to make the
CBT succeed?
Last year, we had 55 centres all over the country but now, we have
about 159. That is about three times what we had last year which is a
very wonderful development. The tertiary institutions that we didn't
use last year have now come up; even private establishments,
institutions and individuals have established computer-based test
centres. We had about 300 applicants, willing centres, but when we
screened them, we discovered that we could use only about 159 for this
country. I think we are lucky that a lot of people are now anxious
about the use of CBT and we discovered that last year, they performed
relatively better. There were no examination malpractices or missing
results; no hues and cries. So, I think we should continue. On our
part, we have constructed about 10 centres, at least in nine offices
outside Bwari. In our own centre in Bwari here, we can take about 250
candidates. In other offices across the country like in Jigawa, Niger,
Kwara, Oyo, Ekiti, Delta, Abia, Taraba and Benue, those places can
take about 120 candidates each and we hope with time, we will be able
to expand our horizon to other parts of the country. But our centre in
Abuja here can take 250 candidates at a go and that is our plan for
other places too, if God helps us.
With the epileptic supply, how is the board addressing the issue of
power supply at CBT centres?
When I said 300 establishments applied (for the CBT centres), they did
not all qualify because they didn't have back-up electricity like
inverters or generators. In fact, we have told them we will consider
generators rather than public power supply because it can fail us. But
if they have inverters that can last for the next 20-30 minutes before
they change to generators, so be it. If you don't have all these
facilities, we won't accredit you. And that is what has led to a sharp
reduction from over 300 applicants to 159 acceptable applicants.
So, what would happen to candidates in the rural areas who have no
access to computers?
Well, I have said it, if you can use a handset, then you should be
able to do our exams. It has been designed. I think seeing is
believing, when we are conducting exams, just come along or go to a
rural place where the examination is taking place and see the reaction
of these young kids in the various centres. It is not a sophisticated
design; it's a very simple one. Of course, in future, there will be
what we call multimedia approach. In terms of the things in place, do
you know that prison inmates are now ready to take our CBT? We have
about 150 or so in Kaduna prisons and another 25 or so in Ikoyi,
Lagos. We are going to give them opportunity to take the exams using
the computer-based approach.

Marrying 3 Wives Is My Destiny And I Am Happy When I Look At Them - OJB Jazreel
Many didn't know OJB Jezreel had three wives until recently. His first
wife ended up donating one of her kidneys to him. Speaking to Punch,
he says he won't advice anyone to marry three wives but said it was
his destiny
I don't think it has anything to do with fame. There are people
without fame yet they married more than three wives. Those people are
not even rich. I think it is destiny; there is no other way to explain
it.
"It is everything. But predominantly, I think it is by design. Some
people believe in destiny while some others don't. I think it was
destined to happen. I believe in destiny. I don't think I would have
survived it if it weren't destined to be. People get shocked that I
have three wives because I don't live like somebody who has three
wives. Come to think of it, there is no particular way to live life.
Am I supposed to wear three shirts because I have three wives? I don't
even advise people to have three wives and when I talk about it, they
are shocked."
On if he regrets it...
There is no regret. Initially, you would tell yourself that if you had
one wife, this would have happened or that would have happened if you
didn't. But then again, you have to check and understand that life is
in stages. I am appreciating life the way it is. Out of the marriages,

Ronaldo refuses to rule out Man Utd return
Cristiano Ronaldo has refused to rule out a return to Manchester
United in the future and maintains his "love" for his former club.
The 29-year-old joined Real Madrid from the Red Devils in a EURO 94
million deal in 2009 after spending six seasons at Old Trafford.
Ronaldo, who will not face United in Saturday's pre-season friendly in
Michigan due to fitness concerns, admits he sees his former club as a
"second family" but reiterates that he is happy to remain at the
Santiago Bernabeu for now.
"Manchester United are one of my favourite clubs, everyone knows that
every time when I speak about Real Madrid I speak about Manchester
United, I loved it there," Ronaldo told reporters.
"I was 18 years old when I joined, I won everything there, the people
treat me like a god there so I appreciate that and, in the future, who
knows.
"I remember when we played there against Manchester United in the
Champions League. Their affection killed me, I was so happy.
"I had fantastic moments and I appreciate this club. For me, it's one
of the best clubs in the world and I have passion for this club.
"Some players I am still in contact with because, when I was there, I
created a good relationship with everybody - not just the players, but
all of the staff.
"It was like my second family there, so I'll not forget that the
people treat me good. I love Manchester United and to go back... With
football you never know.
"Of course, I'm happy at Real Madrid - it's my home, my club - but
Manchester United treated me unbelievable so you never know."
Ronaldo also believes United will prosper under Louis van Gaal's
guidance following their worst-ever Premier League campaign last
season under fired coach David Moyes, who had replaced Sir Alex
Ferguson in 2013.
"It will be a better season for sure. My feeling is Van Gaal is a
fantastic coach, he showed that all the time for Netherlands, the team
played unbelievable at the World Cup, and I hope that Man Utd come
back like the people know," he added.

mother of five. Since losing her 30-year-old son, Yusuf, an
undergraduate of Psychology at the University of Lagos, to cancer on
July 22 this year, her world has suddenly taken a different twist. The
painful demise of Yusuf leaves a big hole in her heart.
"My son didn't deserve to die this way," she cried, while a handful of
women who had thronged the family home at Lawanson, a sprawling suburb
within the Lagos metropolis, made spirited efforts at consoling her.
"He was a lovable child," she continued. "He wanted the best for
everyone around him. He was the type of child any parent would wish
for.
"We started last year's Ramadan fast together but when it got to a
stage, he said he couldn't continue anymore, that he was experiencing
pains in his throat. But three weeks later, he complained of tooth and
gum pain. After some time, we noticed some wound inside his mouth.
Immediately, he started visiting the Lagos University Teaching
Hospital at Idi-Araba for a solution."
But rather than getting a lasting answer to his situation at LUTH, his
visit to the medical facility opened what would be a long and tortuous
journey on the sickbed. It is one step Alhaja says, flushed her son's
entire dreams down the drain.
"Even though Yusuf had done series of tests, a specialist he was
directed to see at LUTH asked him to do a particular one again at a
diagnostic centre at Surulere which costs N35, 000. When the doctor
saw the result, he said they were going to cut somewhere in his nose
and mouth which would be tested in the laboratory. He was asked to
come back the following week for the result on that. But by the time
he went back, nothing had been done. He was very sad and insisted that
they attended to him and give him the result.
"I was shocked to realise that he wasn't given any drug or analgesic
even after something was cut off from his nose and mouth. He told me
he wasn't given any drug, I wondered why. When the result was finally
released to him, he was told he had cancer. We couldn't believe it,"
she said.
The news came as a rude shock to the entire family. The result was
hard to accept. Cancer? Where did it come from? It had never happened
in the family. But what could they do? Time was running out. Yusuf's
condition was deteriorating. They needed answers at all cost.
"The doctor assigned to him at LUTH, Dr. Bamgboye, of the ENT section
said he should do a radiography test. He told us that their machine
was faulty and that we should either go to University College
Hospital, Ibadan or Eko Hospital. That was in November last year. At
Ibadan, we were also told the machine was faulty. We finally brought
him to Eko Hospital even though it was quite expensive.
"When we got there, we were first asked to pay N40, 000 which we did.
They however told us that we had to come back and do it in January
because there were so many people on the queue who had booked
appointments ahead. We pleaded with one of the workers there that he
was a student and he needed to be quickly attended to because of his
academics. The lady had pity on us and asked us to bring him for the
radiography the next day after we paid another N120, 000.
"We were also told that he would need to do chemotherapy for six weeks
at the cost of N45, 000 per week. Sometimes it could be as much as
N50, 000. After the whole treatment, we were given a note to take him
back to LUTH, that they had finished their own job on him. But by his
next clinic day, Yusuf could not stand or walk again.
"His sister went to complain to Dr. Bamgboye who told her that he
would only know what step to take after seeing him. The following
week, I took him down to LUTH myself but was told on arrival that the
doctor was away in Abuja for a meeting. I insisted that another doctor
attend to him but the nurses told us it was not possible and that it
was only Dr. Bamgboye who had been on his case that could attend to
him.
"We took him back to our private doctor and he checked him again. At
that point, he could not eat anymore," she said.

Imo: Contractors flee with mobilisation fees
When Chief Rochas Okorocha came on board as Governor of Imo State, he
told the world that he was in a haste to develop the state.
One of the major issues he tackled almost immediately was the
rehabilitation or reconstruction of the road network in the state. He
went to work with electrifying speed that most citizens started
wondering how he was funding the numerous projects.
Many contractors, who were largely unknown in road construction world,
were engaged by the administration to execute the projects. Several
roads were actually opened and this elicited high hopes and
acclamation from the people.
With time, some pictures started filtering in. Pay-loaders were seen
grading roads, preparatory to asphalting. Imo people equally started
hearing that some of the contractors were spending their personal or
borrowed monies to execute the road projects. The same was also true
of the numerous but unfinished gates in Owerri municipality.
Confirming this in a recent release, Okorocha's former media aide, who
now doubles as President, South East Progressives Assembly, SEPA, Mr.
Ebere Uzoukwa, described the scenario as part of Okorocha's "use and
dump and Almajiri politics".
His words: "Why did he (Okorocha) subject contractors to execute
government projects with borrowed funds only to dump and deny them at
the point of payment? Is Governor Okorocha unaware that some of those
contractors have miserably lost their lives and valuables to banks
that loaned them funds?", Uzoukwa asked. Okorocha, who did not want to
be drawn into the issue raised by Uzoukwa, however told journalists
that since he had the final say on who gets what contract, there was
no point going through the rigmarole due process.
The Minister of External Affairs 1, Professor Viola Onwuliri, and many
other critics of the administration, who were not amused by the
Governor's reply, accused Okorocha of awarding contracts for road and
some other projects verbally.
It was the considered opinion of the fiery Minister that the situation
explains how and why most of the road projects do no have engineering
drawings or pass through the state tenders board, as well as get
abandoned midway or sub-standardly executed.
Delivering a lecture organized last week in Owerri by Rotary Club of
Owerri Metropolitan, on why roads fail in Imo State, Engr. Jude Ujah
identified lack of engineering design and proper supervision of all
road projects awarded to contracting firms by the administration as
being largely responsible for the short life span of the roads.
"The construction of any road must pass through three critical stages.
These include the designing, the construction and the usage. Our
problem in Imo is that we got the first phase wrong because two thirds
of the roads constructed by the state government are not designed",
Ujah said.
He said that the design gives the specification, which he said "varies
from a portion of the road to the other".
Continuing, Ujah explained that the soil strata has to be studied,
adding that samples are supposed to be taken to the laboratory, so as
to determine the constituent materials that would be used for the
construction of any road.
He expressed shock that "from the speed with which these new roads
started failing in the state goes to show that the existing drainage
pattern, among other parameters, was not studied".
His words: "The problem we are facing now is that the design is not
there. What we have always seen is a bulldozer laying out the road. If
the design is there it would determine the depth the machine would
scrape the soil".
He also identified lack of compaction as another area the state
government gets it wrong, stressing that roads are usually in compact
layers.
"What happens is that the contractors lay the same day and apply the
asphalt. Most of the roads that are having problems now do not have
stone base and some of the ones that have stone base, do not have the
required thickness", Engr. Ujah said.
In his own remarks, the President, Rotary Club of Owerri Metropolitan,
Rotarian Kelechi Anyanwu, thanked Ujah for the lecture.
"We were already wondering why a good percentage of the roads have
been washed away with the first rain. I think it is better to
concentrate and complete two or three roads that would serve the
people for years, like late Sam Mbakwe did, than build several roads
that won't survive one rainy season", Anyanwu reasoned.

Man stabs lover to death because she refused him marriage
As 26 year-old girl, Gift Sunday, left her abode in Ketu , Lagos, to
meet her boyfriend, Raphael Effiong, who had invited her over on
phone, Monday, July 28, 2014. Never, in her wildest imagination, did
she envisage that would be her last day on earth.
Time was 8.30pm, shortly after the Anietie family whom Gift stayed
with, had their dinner.
While other members of the family retired early, Gift announced that
she was going to meet her boyfriend, who was well known by the family.
But apprehension reportedly set in when she did not return by
midnight. Tension, heightened after efforts to reach her on the phone
proved abortive as it was discovered to be switched off.
Next day, the family's fear was confirmed following the visit of a
woman later discovered to be a management staff of Mayor Guest house
located at 10 Yusuf Eleran street, Ketu. The woman was said to have
invited Gift's sister , Mrs Ume Anietie to Fine Day hospital at
Elebiju street, where she was informed that Gift had passed on!
Love gone sour
Gift, as gathered, was stabbed in the arm and breast by her boyfriend,
Raphael at the guest house.
A man who claimed to have witnessed it all toldCrime Guardthat :"I was
seeing a friend off, when I heard the shout of help from the hotel. I
sensed all was not well and went to the hotel to inform the staff.
They told me it was normal to hear lovers shout. But I insisted that
the shout was not that of pleasure but of panic and pain. It was at
that point that we all rushed to the room and forced the door open. To
our disbelief, we saw a lady on the floor with a deep cut in her hand
from where blood was gushing out. The man with her was holding a pair
of scissors .
Delay
At first ,nobody knew what to do. We told the man to take her to the
hospital but he could not carry her because she was big in size. We
all carried her outside with blood still gushing out from the deep cut
in her hand.
It took about 30 to 40 minutes before she was rushed to Fine Day
hospital. Even when she got there, the doctors did not attend to her
on time. It was not until the Police at Alapere division called and
instructed them to commence treatment on her that they started
attending to her and we left", the eye witness narrated.
Her Last words
Doctors at Fine Day hospital were said to have managed to revive Gift.
In an inaudible tone, she was said to have told some of the hospital
staff that it was not the first time Raphael would beat her .
According to one of the hospital workers who spoke on condition of
anonymity : " She told us that was not the first time her boyfriend
would beat her. She said anytime he sees her with any man, he would
beat her, both in the open. She also said that was why she decided not
marry him, so that he would not kill her someday"
At a point, Gift could not reportedly speak, as she complained of
weakness. Unfortunately, she could not owing to loss of blood.Had
blood been transfused into Gift, she would have probably lived to
share her ordeal,Crime Guardgathered.
Why I killed her
Raphael as gathered, attempted to escape, on noticing the magnitude of
his action. But he was apprehended by staff of the hotel who handed
him over to policemen at Alapere, from where he was transferred to the
State Criminal Investigation Department,SCID, Yaba, Thursday.
At the SCID, Raphael told operatives of the Homicide section that he
stabbed Gift because she refused to marry him.
According to the Akwa-Ibom State suspect:"I never knew she would die.
I never meant to kill her. I only wanted to threaten her with the
scissors. We have been going out for a year and I loved her so much ...
I proposed to her but she turned down my proposal, saying she couldn't
marry me. I have begged her several times to have a change of mind but
she didn't.
I have invested so much on her with the hope of marrying her some day.
But I never knew she was only deceiving me, by playing on my
intelligence. I just could not stand her getting married to another
person. The mere thought of that sends me crazy", he said, begging the
deceased's family members to forgive him. But members of the
deceased's family are of the opinion that the act was preconceived,
asking why the suspect took a scissors to the guest house in the first
place.

I have sex three to four times everyday-Maheeda
Whenever the name, Maheeda is mentioned, the first thing that comes to
mind is controversy, sex, nudity and promiscuity.
The goddess of X and Naija Bad Girl as she is fondly called by her
fans isn't afraid to go nude as she's constantly releasing nude photos
of herself online and sexually explicit videos.
Showtime Celebrity visited her studio in Dolphin Estate, Lagos, where
she opens up on her sex life and more...
What have you been up to in recent times?
I've been bad, I've been naughty... You've seen Naija Bad Girl video and
Lasgidi Chick. Now, I'm trying to see if I can drop one single before
the end of the year. But I'm not sure that will be possible because
I'm shooting the video in November. So, It could be next year.
What is the inspiration behind your "Naija Bad Girl" song?
I had this vision of what's happening right now. Like I'm very bad,
like I'm thebaddestgirl in Nigeria which is not true. So, my vision is
actually to see my posters in people's bedrooms and stuff like that. I
want to be that sex symbol one can imagine of.
Why do you want to be a Sex symbol?
Because it works abroad. It could work here too. I had my challenges.
They are still there but there's no stopping me because I know that
for anything new you have to fight for it
But why are you leveraging on being a sex symbol?
Because sex sells. I want to make money and also, I want to make my
name. It's the only space in the Nigerian music industry that is just
there, everybody is scared to tread on such a path, so I'm daring it.
You came back from Holland recently. What were you doing there?
I went to Holland because of my daughter. She's about to enter High
School and I don't want her to go to school over there. My husband
taught me a lot. He opened my mind to see a lot of things in different
ways, so, I said alright foreign education would be very nice for my
daughter. I actually sacrificed staying in Nigeria for my daughter.
What really made you start putting those videos online?
To attract attention. I knew it's going to draw the desired attention
to me. So, that's why I did it and like I said, sex sells and that's
just one of the ways to show it off.
What message are you trying to convey with your nude pictures and videos?
I don't know if I'm trying to convey any message or I'm just doing my
business. I think I'm just entertaining my fans. Sometimes, you add
your personal life and culture and stuff like that to it. But for me,
its business right now.
Do you make money from it?
Right now, Yes. I have this Australian tour coming up and they have
already paid me. I'm not going to tell you how much but imagine going
online to buy tickets. So, you know how much already I've been paid.
What does sex mean to you?
It's like food, it's like shower. I'm trying to say it's natural, it
comes naturally. Your body would request for it. Sometimes my body
would request for it like 4 times a day, maybe 5, maybe once but
anytimesha, we go do am well
Like how much do you get paid for your sex stuff?
I also do modeling in Holland. If you change the money it would run
into millions of naira.
How about guys who want to get down with you and pay you for sex?
I don't do that. I do Modeling and Entertainment also, strictly
business. Some people just want you to be a waiter and they want you
to look sexy, that also goes.
Have you ever been approached by someone who is willing to pay to
have sex with you?
Yes, a lot of them all over the world. But I turn them down because of
my husband.
But your husband won't know about such game?
My husband is a very nice guy and I think I owe him that, at least.
I've done a lot that not all guys can really tolerate. I owe him that
respect.
Do you believe prostitution should be legalized?
Yes, because I've been there. I've been with these girls and I know
what they are going through and I've been to Holland where I think
prostitution is legalised. I see the way they handle it. It won't be
bad here because it's everywhere anyway and they're not stopping it,
so why not just legalise it and let's just know its happening. I mean
it's everywhere.
As a woman, what turns you on sexually?
Appearance, a little bit rugged and strong presence. Also, character
is part of it. He has to have a good heart.
Continued in comment box.

ways, so, I said alright foreign education would be very nice for my

EBOLA OUTBREAK: Ghana bans flights from Nigeria and other West African countries
Following the death of a Liberian victim of the deadly Ebola virus in
the country, Ghana has banned flights from Nigeria and other West
African countries, according toCajnewsAfrica
The Managing Director, Ghana Airport Company, Charles Asare, said it
was part of elaborate emergency measures the authorities were
implementing to prevent the virus from spreading into the West African
country.
Also, restrictions have been imposed on the movement of Liberian
refugees who are still at the Buduburam Refugee Camp in the country.
Ever since its outbreak, the Ebola virus has claimed the lives of over
600 victims in the West African sub-region.
Ghana also bans flight from Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
Ghana's Health Ministry also announced that efforts were underway to
establish Ebola treatment centres across the country.
The country's Health Minister, Kwaku Agyeman-Mensah, advised Ghanaians
to be patient because government was doing its best to protect the
citizens.
"It is worth bearing in mind that preparedness is not an event but a
process," he said.
Though a suspected fever case which was reported at a clinic in Ghana
was negative, Ghanaians have expressed fear about the possible spread
of the disease in the country due to closeness to the four countries
where deaths have been recorded.
Governments in the sub-region are putting in place stringent measures
to prevent the further spread of the disease.
According to the health minister, the disease surveillance system in
Ghana has been placed on "high alert through intensification of viral
haemorrhagic fever surveillance, the field officers are on the alert
to pick, package and transport specimens to the lab for confirmation."
The respective health officers at Ghana's ports have been given
orientation in the detection of cases at points of entry.
"We have activated a system for screening all passengers especially
from countries that have recorded cases," Agyeman-Mensah added. The
health minister gave the assurance that his outfit was monitoring the
progression of the Ebola disease in West African nations.
But the Federal Government had said that there was no outbreak.
The General Manager, Public Affairs, Nigerian Civil Aviation
Authority, Mr. Fan Ndubouke, said that the agency was not aware of
such a development.
He said, "We are not aware of any such thing, we have confirmed from
Arik Air and Aero Contractors which are the two airlines that fly to
Ghana from Nigeria, and Arik has confirmed to us that they haven't
received such notice.
"We are still trying to get Aero to confirm, but I can tell you that
from NCAA's angle, there is nothing like that."
The Spokesman, Aero Contractors, Mr. Simon Tunba, told our
correspondent that Aero had not heard anything like that.
"We have not heard anything concerning such, and have not seen any
letter to that effect."
Efforts to reach Arik for comments could not yield as at press time.

ATMs Give Out Free Money, Gifts As Bank Thanks Its Customers
In an effort to thank its customers one Canadian bank turned ATMs into
thanking machines that give free money and remarkable gifts.
The customers were given some gifts, including trips, memorable
experiences and fulfilled dreams
A video showing a cash machine talking to customers and giving them
free cash and gifts has become an internet sensation. The video that
starts with the following words,"Sometimes you just want to say thank
you. So we turned ATMs into Automated Thanking Machines"has already
been viewed nearly 3 million times.
Marvelous ATMs surprised customers by talking to them and addressing
them by name. Then the customers were given some gifts, including
trips, memorable experiences and fulfilled dreams.
We wanted to say thank you to our customers in a way that we felt was
unique and distinctive
Among the 12 lucky specifically pre-selected customers were one single
mom who had been unable to take her kids on vacation and was given a
trip to Disneyland and two $1,000 cheques for their education.
Other ATMs of TD Canada Trust bank gave every customer a $20 bill
An elderly woman received tickets to Trinidad so she could visit her
daughter who is fighting with cancer. And a die-hard Toronto Blue Jays
fan was offered the opportunity to throw out the first pitch at a
game.
Our local branch employees know their customers really well and often
have close relationships with them
Other ATMs of TD Canada Trust bank gave every customer a $20 bill last
Friday as a thank you for their loyalty. Chris Stamper, a senior
vice-president at the bank, said:
"Our local branch employees know their customers really well and often
have close relationships with them. Some have been through tough times
and some are just wonderfully kind and caring people. They had no idea
what was in store. We wanted to say thank you to our customers in a

109,000 Sell-out Crowd To Watch Manchester United Vs Real Madrid
When two of the greatest football clubs in the world meet, a mammoth
crowd is often expected to pay attention.
Manchester United and Real Madrid sold out all 109,000 tickets for
their pre-season friendly in Michigan on Saturday.
Expectedly so, the crowd will be the biggest ever gathered to watch a
football match in the US. The record was previously held by a friendly
between Barcelona v LA Galaxy at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena in 2009,
which got 93,137 in attendance.
An excited Wayne Rooney described the support in the US as great and
the ticket sales, incredible.
"It's fantastic. The fanbase over here is great and it's two massive
clubs, two of the biggest clubs in the world, so to sell that many
tickets for a pre-season match is incredible.
A club with rich history, United has played before a bigger crowd,
with 120,000 people present to watch a European Cup semi-final which
held in Bernabeu in April 1957 . This will be the largest attendance
they have played for since then.
One of the players that might have caught the eyes of the fans in the
US, Cristiano Ronaldo is sadly not playing the game.
Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said of his forward: "Ronaldo has
been working individually, separate from the team, and he is
continuing to work.
"We will not put him out tomorrow, as he has not trained with the full squad.

Liberia, explaining that the government was investigating if he died
from Ebola.
The commissioner urged residents to collaborate with government in
checking the Ebola threat in the country by reporting suspected cases
for government`s intervention.

Glasgow 2014: Chika Amalaha Loses Games Gold
The winner of Team Nigeria's first gold medal of the ongoing
Commonwealth Games, Chika Amalaha, has been stri*ped of her medal
after failing an in-competition drug test.
The 16-year-old claimed gold in the women's 53kg category on Friday
after lifting at a combined total of 196kg.
The Rivers State-born lifter was previously suspended" by the Games
federation after her 'A' sample tested positive for a combination of
banned diuretics and masking agent- amiloride and hydrochlorothiazide.
She is now "fully suspended" from the Glasgow Games and her result
"nullified" following her positive "B' sample test.
The CGF statement read in part: "The Commonwealth Games Federation has
determined that Nigerian weightlifter, Chika Amalaha, has committed an
anti-doping rule violation and has fully suspended her from the
Commonwealth Games in Glasgow."
Dika Toua from Papua New guinea has been awarded the gold medal with
the Indian duo Santoshi Matsa and Swati Singh claiming silver and
bronze.
Amalaha equaled the Games snatch record of 82kg with her first attempt
before lifting 85kg on her third.
She had claimed the pole position by a combined total of 196kg- a
Games record- and she would have been the youngest woman to win a
weightlifting title in the Games history- according to the
International Weightlifting Association.
Amalaha's ordeal sees Nigeria's gold medal count drop to seven, plus
her six silver and 14 bronze equal a combined 27 medals; yet retains
the 8th spot on the medal standings.
She is the first athlete to fail at the ongoing Games, aside some few
pre-competition anti-doping rule violations.
The World Anti-Doping Agency recommends a standard two-year ban for a
first doping offence.
Meanwhile, Edith Ogoke, Efe Ajagba and Efetobor Apochi won bronze
medal each for the country in the women's middleweight, men's
super-heavyweight and heavyweight boxing categories respectively,
after losing their semi-final matches by unanimous decision on Day
nine.
Ajagba, 20, lost to Australia's Joseph Goodall in the men's +91kg
super heavy semi-final, while Nigeria's only female boxer at the 2012
London Games, Ogoke, 23, was no match for Team England's Savannah
Marshall in the women's (69 - 75kg) middle semi-final, both on Friday.
Apochi, 26, captain of the Nigeria boxing team, lost the day's first
bout in the men's 91kg heavyweight semi-final to Canada's Samir
El-Mais.
Women's freestyle wrestler Blessing Oborududu added a bronze to the
country's tally by beating England's Chloe Spiteri 3-1 in the 63kg
bronze medal final.

first doping offence.
Ebola: WHO, 3 West African States to raise $100m 0
*US withdraws Peace Corps volunteersas Ghana introduces isolation centers
* Africa leaders summit to discuss problem
The World Health Organization and leaders of West African nations
affected by the Ebola outbreak are set to announce a joint $100m
(£59m; 75m euro) response plan.
They will meet in Guinea today to launch the initiative aimed at
tackling a virus which has claimed 729 lives.
The disease kills up to 90 percent of those infected, though the
fatality rate in the current epidemic is running at around 60 percent,
according to reports. In the final stages, its symptoms include
external bleeding, massive internal bleeding, vomiting and diarrhea at
which point the virus becomes highly contagious.
Nigeria's Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) suspended Asky airline for
bringing Ebola to Lagos, a teeming mega-city of 21 million people.
Many people had questioned how Patrick Sawyer, a person showing signs
of the disease, whose sister had died of it three weeks previous had
been able to board an international flight. Sawyer died in Lagos.
Health officials are scrambling to avoid the nightmare scenario of an
Ebola outbreak in Lagos, but say there are so far no signs of further
cases. Sierra Leone's president yesterday declared a public health
emergency over the outbreak after 233 people died there, joining
neighbouring Liberia in imposing tough controls as the death toll from
the worst-ever outbreak of the virus hit 729 in West Africa.
Sierra Leone President Ernest Bai Koroma canceled a visit to
Washington for a U.S.-Africa summit next week. "Sierra Leone is in a
great fight ... Failure is not an option," Koroma said in a speech late
on Wednesday, adding that the state of emergency would initially last
between 60 and 90 days. "Extraordinary challenges require
extraordinary measures."
He said police and the military would enforce a quarantine on all
epicenters of the disease, and would help health officers and NGOs do
their work unhindered, following a number of attacks on health workers
by local communities.
House-to-house searches would be implemented to trace Ebola victims
and homes where the disease was identified would be quarantined until
cleared by medical teams, he said, announcing a ban on all public
meetings except those related to Ebola.
Sierra Leone, a former British colony, said passengers arriving and
departing Lungi International Airport would be subject to new
protocols, including body temperature scans.
The moves echoed a raft of measures unveiled by Liberia on Wednesday,
which included the closure of all schools across the country and a
possible quarantine of affected communities.
Ghana also announced yesterday it was introducing body temperature
screening of all travelers from West African countries at Accra
airport and other major entry points, with isolation centers being set
up in three towns.
Kyei Faried, deputy director in charge of disease control, told a news
conference that authorities had a list of 11 passengers who
disembarked from Sawyer's flight and were monitoring them. The
government is considering whether to ban flights from affected
countries.
The U.S. Peace Corps said it was withdrawing 340 volunteers from
Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea after two of them came in contact
with a person who later died of the virus
The World Health Organisation said it was in urgent talks with donors
and international agencies to deploy more medical staff and resources
to the regions. The WHO reported 57 new deaths between July 24 and
July 27 in Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria.
In a measure of rising international concern, Britain on Wednesday
held a government meeting on Ebola and called it a threat requiring a
response. The White House has also said President Barack Obama was
being briefed on the situation.
But international airlines association IATA said the WHO was not
recommending any travel restrictions or border closures due to the
outbreak, and there would be a low risk to other passengers if an
Ebola patient flew.
The spread of the deadly Ebola virus and assistance for affected
countries will be discussed during an African summit in Washington
next week, a senior State Department official said yesterday.
U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Africa Linda Thomas-Greenfield
said the issue will be discussed in detail during side meetings. The
leaders of Sierra Leone and Liberia, two of the worst affected
countries, have canceled plans to attend the summit. It is unclear
whether the president of Guinea, Alpha Conde, still plans to travel to
Washington.

Gunmen kill police sergeant in Benue
Benue State Police Command has launched a manhunt for gunmen, who
killed a policeman, Sergeant Bawa Ekoja, attached to 'Operation
Dzenda' in Makurdi, the state capital.
The command's image-maker, Daniel Ezeala (SP), in a telephone chat
with Daily Sun, said Ekoja was going back home after closing from
night duty at a hotel located in Ankpa Quarters, Makurdi, when the
assailants in an ash Toyota Camry car shot him in his back.
Ezeala, explained that the deceased policeman was on his motorcycle
when the gunmen shot him and he died immediately, adding that his
corpse had been deposited at the morgue of the Federal Medical Centre
(FMC), Makurdi.
He vowed that the command would not rest on its oars until the
criminals were apprehended and made to face the wrath of the law.
Although, it was not clear at the time of filing the report why the
gunmen were after Ekoja, it would be recalled that the state Governor,
Dr. Gabriel Suswam, had last week, raised the alarm over the spate of
insecurity in the state.
Checks by Daily Sun also revealed that cultists' activities had
continued to be on the rise in the state in recent times, with no
fewer than five persons already killed in the last one month in
cult-related circumstances.

FG, Dangote sign $1bn MoU on rice production
THE Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and Dangote
Group have signed a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, of $1 billion
investment on rice production.
Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina,
described the MoU as landmark and historical in the country's rice
production, as Nigeria will soon become a net exporter of rice.
Adesina who lauded the huge investment proposed by the Chairman,
Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, said by 2017 and 2018 Nigeria
will be self-sufficient in rice production and become a net exporter
of the commodity.
Adesina said: "Today is a great day for Nigeria's agriculture and a
day to reaffirm the success of Mr President's drive to transform
agriculture in this country from being a net importer of food to not
just being self-sufficient but to become a net exporter of food.
"The investment is landmark and historical, which will change
everything and the Agricultural Transfor-mation Agenda is working for
us and Mr. President. What Dangote has brought here is a climax of
what we are doing here.
"What the $1 billion investment will do is very transformative. This
investment will cover 150, 000 hectares accumulated across five
states; Edo, Kebbi, Niger, Jigawa and Kwara. The Dangote Group and the
Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development are mindful of the
importance of smallholder farmers. It will include the communities in
creating wealth in all these areas.
"This single investment by Alhaji Dangote will allow us have
additional 1.4 million metric tonnes of rice produced annually and if
that is translated to what is milled that means we will be producing
in 2017 and 2018 from his own investment, a total of 960, 000 metric
tonnes of milled rice, and that will be 46 per cent of all the total
amount of rice that we are currently importing today. Certainly in
2017, 2018 Nigeria will become a net exporter of rice."
The Minister who commended Dangote, described him as a Nigerian who
believes in his own country and a proud Nigerian. He also described
him as "once largest importer in Nigeria but today the largest
exporter of cement." He outlined areas in the MoU his ministry will
implement by providing infrastructure in areas of investment declared
Staple Crop Processing Zones, SCPZs, alongside with Ministries of
Water, Works and Power, and also the new varieties of rice and
facilitating funds from the Central Bank of Nigeria.
"What the Ministry is going to do in this endeavour, first and
foremost, is to work with them in all the areas they are investing and
these areas will be designated as Staple Crop Processing Zones, SCPZs,
which means my ministry, Ministries of Power, Water, and Works have
been directed by Mr. President to upgrade infrastructure in all these
areas.
"Secondly, we are going to help them with technical support. In
Nigeria we have introduced new varieties of rice called Faro 44, Faro
52, and over 6 million farmers grow them. Those varieties will be the
ones Dangote Group will be growing beat any rice variety in the global
market today.
"We will be supporting them in research and development, and this
changes the whole game in rice in Africa with this single investment
is a turning point in rice production in Africa. We will support the
endeavour with new rice varieties, agronomy practices, mechanisation
services that will support our farmers.

Glasgow2014: Women will always be on top of men - Onyali
When Team Nigeria officials count their blessings in the ongoing XX
Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, much of the plaudits would no
doubt be going to women for making Nigerians walk with their noses in
front.
As it was in the beginning, Nigerian women have been in the vanguard
of amassing medals at events more than their male counterparts and the
Glasgow Games is not different. They carry the banner here and remain
a priceless treasure of Team Nigeria.
Former African record holder Mary Onyali could not help but to laugh
when asked why the trend has always been like this.
''The Ladies are on top. Women are easier to coach than the men. Men
are hard to coach and to convince.
It's a natural thing. Men have been under our shadows for a long time.
It is like taking a horse to the stream.
It is difficult to force it to drink water. We've been supporting our
male counterparts morally and financially and yet they are not hungry
enough to pull their worth.
They need to put their acts together. They need to wake up!", Onyali
who has been an inspiration to the emerging force of women led by
Blessing Okagbare said.
Weightlifting coach Emmanuel Oshomah who also led Maryam Usman to win
gold here, agrees that women have done better than the men in Glasgow
because they are disciplined.
''It has to do with the level of discipline and endurance. There are
things that women cannot do for a long time. It is not so with men. It
is natural. Also, the elasticity level of women are better than that
of the men. Women tend to start sports earlier than men.
This is so because men want to be independent before embracing sports.
And when they enter at old age, once they sustain injury, it takes
longer to heal because of age. Don't forget that men are always
fending for themselves", Oshomah said.
A break-down of Team Nigeria's medals shows that women have won seven
gold, 3 silver and 5 bronze medals while men have won no gold, 3
silver and 6 bronze medals.
The amazons who won gold include; Blessing Okagbare 2 gold(100m and
200m), Ese Brume(Long Jump gold), Adesanmi Oluwatoyin(Weightlifting),
Usman Maryam(Weightlifting), Adekuoroye Odunayo(Wrestling), and
Adeniyi Aminat.
The women who won silver are Winifred Ndidi(Weightlifting), Okoli
Obioma(Weightlifting), and Ebireguesele Itohan(Weightlifting).
The men who got silver medals are Ayenuwa Yinka(Weightlifting), Dick
Abibo(Wrestling) and Welson Ebikewenimo(Wrestling).
Six men won bronze while five women won bronze.
The strength of women lies in endurance and patience. Women quietly
keep working, overcoming obstacles, learning, growing, until they
reach their goal. But even today, many males are threatened by strong
women.
