Understanding Prostate Health

Prostate health is a topic often overlooked but crucial for men, especially those over 40 years old. While the prostate is exclusive to men, the importance of awareness extends to everyone, as we all have fathers, uncles, brothers, sons, friends, neighbors, and colleagues who are susceptible to prostate-related issues. In this informative article, we aim to provide essential information, reassurance, and a plan of action to promote prostate health.

The Role of the Prostate

To comprehend prostate health, it's vital to understand the role of the prostate gland. Imagine your body as a complex plumbing system. Just as a house needs an overhead storage tank, your body relies on the urinary bladder to store urine. From there, a network of pipes, including the urethra, extends to various parts of the body, including the tip of the penis. It's around this region that the walnut-sized prostate gland resides.

The prostate's primary function is to produce seminal fluid, which combines with sperm to create semen during sexual intercourse. This fluid not only nourishes but also lubricates the sperm, facilitating their journey. However, after the age of 40, the prostate may begin to enlarge, causing a range of urinary issues.

Recognizing Prostate Enlargement

Prostate enlargement, technically known as benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH), can lead to several noticeable changes in a man's urinary patterns. These changes can include:

1. Weak Urine Stream: A man may experience a weaker and less forceful urine stream, making it challenging to urinate with precision.

2. Terminal Dripping: After urination, some urine may continue to drip, leading to embarrassing stains and discomfort.

3. Hesitancy: The flow of urine may be delayed due to obstructions in the urethra, causing a longer wait before urination begins.

4. Incomplete Emptying: A persistent feeling that the bladder isn't completely empty after urination can be an indication of prostate issues.

5. Increased Urination Frequency: The bladder works harder to compensate for urethral obstructions, leading to more frequent urination, especially at night.

6. Urgency: There may be a sudden, compelling need to urinate, requiring immediate attention.

7. Nocturia: Frequent nighttime awakenings to urinate can disrupt sleep patterns and lead to fatigue.

Health Implications

Untreated prostate enlargement can have serious consequences. Stored urine can become infected, causing pain and discomfort during urination. Additionally, urine crystals can form, potentially leading to kidney or bladder stones. Chronic urinary retention, where the bladder becomes overfilled, can result in urinary incontinence and kidney damage.

Seeking Medical Attention

If a man experiences acute urinary retention, where he cannot pass urine, it's a medical emergency. However, it's crucial to remember that all these symptoms are associated prostate enlargement, not necessarily prostate cancer or prostatitis.

Maintaining Optimal Prostate Health

The good news is that there are lifestyle changes that men can adopt after the age of 40 to promote prostate health. Here are some essential tips:

Nutrition: Pay attention to your diet. Reduce red meat consumption, limit daily milk intake, and prioritize fruits and vegetables. Tomatoes, rich in lycopene, are especially beneficial.

Zinc-Rich Foods: Include zinc-rich foods like pumpkin seeds (ugbogulu) in your diet. Zinc is essential for male sexuality and fertility.

Alcohol Consumption: Monitor alcohol intake as it can affect urinary symptoms. Drink less and drink slowly.

Exercise: Engage in regular exercise to build muscle tone, but avoid high-impact activities like jogging. Brisk walking is a recommended option.

Avoid Prolonged Sitting: Sitting for extended periods can exacerbate prostate symptoms. Take breaks and avoid uncomfortable chairs.

Choose Comfortable Underwear: Opt for breathable boxers over tight underwear to maintain optimal groin temperature and circulation.

Quit Smoking: Smoking negatively impacts blood vessels and circulation around the groin.

Regular Sexual Activity: Regular sexual activity is beneficial for prostate health.

Conclusion

Prostate health is a critical aspect of overall well-being for men over 40. By understanding the importance of maintaining a healthy prostate and implementing lifestyle changes, men can reduce the risk of prostate-related issues and enjoy a better quality of life. Sharing this valuable information is not only a moral obligation but also a way to help others safeguard their prostate health.

Implementation of New Standards for Senior Secondary Education Begins

The implementation of the new minimum standards for senior secondary education in Nigeria has begun from the current academic session, according to the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC). The new standards, which were approved by the Federal Government last year, are aimed at improving the quality and relevance of education at this level.

The new standards cover all aspects of senior secondary education, including curriculum, infrastructure, equipment, personnel, and funding. They also prescribe the minimum requirements for admission, graduation, and assessment of students at this level.

According to the Executive Secretary of NSSEC, Dr Iyela Ajayi, the new standards will set benchmarks for the establishment and operation of senior secondary schools in Nigeria, and ensure that students are adequately prepared for higher education and the labour market. He said that the standards were based on extensive consultations with stakeholders, including state governments, school owners, teachers, parents, students, examination bodies, and development partners.

Some of the key features of the new standards are:

- Senior secondary education will be free, compulsory and universal for all Nigerian children aged 16 to 19.
- Students will study nine to 12 subjects, including a core group that consists of mathematics, English language, a major Nigeria language (Hausa, Igbo, or Yoruba), social studies, creative arts, integrated science, practical agriculture, religious studies (Christianity or Islam), and physical education.
- The curriculum will also include technical and vocational subjects that are relevant to the needs and aspirations of the students and the society.
- Students will be assessed through continuous assessment and external examinations. The Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) will be taken at the end of junior secondary school (Grade 9), while the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) will be taken at the end of senior secondary school (Grade 12).
- The minimum requirement for admission into senior secondary school will be a pass in six subjects, including English and mathematics, in the BECE.
- The minimum requirement for graduation from senior secondary school will be a pass in six subjects, including English and mathematics, in the SSCE.
- The NSSEC will regulate and monitor the quality and standards of senior secondary education in Nigeria. It will also manage the National Senior Secondary Education Fund, which will provide financial support to schools and students.

The NSSEC has urged all stakeholders to cooperate and comply with the standards, as they will enhance the quality and relevance of senior secondary education in Nigeria.

MEMORY OF A LOST DREAM

For civic loyalty, a promising soul did dwell,
A youth of dreams, where hopes and stories swell.
With a heart ablaze, he ventured forth with might,
To serve his land, to chase the morning's light.

But fate's cruel hand, it struck with stealthy grace,
Robbers' shadows cast, in this treacherous place.
A life cut short, a dream that won't unfold,
Insecurity's grip, a tale left untold.

Innocence stolen, a heart now cold,
In this land of ours, where fear takes its hold.
A mother's tears, a family's shattered dream,
Injustice reigns, or so it may seem.

Yet in our hearts, his memory shall reside,
A beacon of hope, in this tempestuous tide.
We'll strive for change, for justice to prevail,
To mend the wounds, and set our nation's sail.

United we stand, against this raging storm,
For every lost soul, we will transform.
In his name, we'll rise, for a safer land we yearn,
To honour his spirit, forever, we shall discern.

Let's join hands, and together we shall fight,
To end this darkness, and restore the light.
In memory of a friend, we'll strive to understand,
A tribute to the fallen, in this troubled land.

A Teachers' Guide on Promoting Inclusiveness in The Classroom

Inclusivity in the classroom is a fundamental necessity for creating a positive learning environment where every student feels valued and can thrive. As educators, our responsibility extends beyond imparting knowledge; it encompasses fostering a sense of belonging and equity. In this article, we will explore practical ways to bring inclusive practices into your classroom, making it a space where every student can succeed.

1. Get to Know Your Students:
Start by understanding the unique needs, backgrounds, and abilities of your students. Take the time to build relationships and listen to their stories. Recognize that every student is an individual with their own experiences and challenges.

2. Create a Welcoming Environment:
Your classroom should be a safe and welcoming space for all. Display inclusive symbols and posters, and ensure that your teaching materials represent diverse perspectives. Arrange your classroom to accommodate various learning styles and abilities.

3. Adapt Your Teaching Methods:
One size does not fit all when it comes to teaching. Modify your teaching methods to accommodate different learning styles, whether it's visual, auditory, or kinesthetic. Use varied instructional strategies to engage all students.

4. Incorporate Diverse Materials:
Include diverse texts, images, and resources in your curriculum. This not only exposes students to a broader range of perspectives but also helps them relate to the material. Incorporate literature, history, and science from diverse cultures and backgrounds.

5. Encourage Collaboration:
Promote collaboration and group work, which can help students learn from each other and develop essential social skills. Assign group projects that encourage teamwork and respect for diverse opinions.

6. Provide Multiple Means of Assessment:
Offer a variety of assessment methods, such as written assignments, oral presentations, and hands-on projects. This allows students with different strengths and weaknesses to demonstrate their knowledge effectively.

7. Address Individual Needs:
Identify and accommodate individual learning needs, whether it's through extra support, differentiated instruction, or assistive technology. Be open to providing extra help and resources when necessary.

8. Use Inclusive Language:
Be mindful of the language you use in your classroom. Avoid stereotypes and derogatory language, and encourage respectful communication among students. Model inclusive language and behavior.

9. Celebrate Diversity:
Acknowledge and celebrate cultural, religious, and personal holidays and traditions within your classroom. This can help students feel valued and respected for their unique backgrounds.

10. Continuous Professional Development:
Stay updated with the latest research and best practices in inclusive education. Attend workshops, conferences, and collaborate with colleagues to improve your teaching methods continually.

Conclusion:
Creating an inclusive classroom is an ongoing process that requires dedication and a genuine commitment to the well-being and success of all students. By getting to know your students, adapting your teaching methods, and fostering a welcoming environment, you can make a significant difference in the lives of those you teach. Embrace inclusivity, and watch as your classroom becomes a place where every student can flourish academically and personally.

For Students:

1. Academic Goals and Achievement:
As students return to school, it's essential for them to set clear academic goals. By maintaining focus and determination, students can maximize their learning potential and achieve academic success.

2. Positive Learning Environment:
Students expect a supportive and positive learning environment where they can thrive. They anticipate teachers who are approachable, engaging, and dedicated to their success. A classroom atmosphere that fosters collaboration, respect, and inclusivity will help students feel motivated and encouraged to actively participate.

3. Personal Development:
Secondary school is a crucial phase for personal development. Students expect opportunities to develop their talents, interests, and life skills. Schools that offer diverse extracurricular activities, clubs, and sports programs provide avenues for students to explore their passions and cultivate essential life skills such as leadership, teamwork, and time management.

For Teachers:

1. Effective Lesson Delivery:
Teachers understand the significance of delivering engaging and interactive lessons. They aim to create an inclusive classroom environment where every student feels valued, respected, and motivated to learn. Utilizing various teaching strategies that cater to different learning styles helps students grasp concepts effectively.

2. Individualized Support:
Teachers are expected to provide individualized support to students, recognizing their unique strengths and weaknesses. They should be ready to offer extra assistance, guidance, and remedial classes, ensuring that no student feels left behind. Regular feedback and assessments help track students' progress and identify areas that need improvement.

3. Collaboration and Professional Development:
Teachers appreciate opportunities for collaboration with colleagues and professional growth. Engaging in workshops, training programs, and peer-led discussions allows them to enhance their teaching methodologies, incorporate new technologies, and stay updated with advances in their subject areas. Such professional development ultimately benefits the students they teach.

For Parents:

1. Communication and Engagement:
Parents desire regular and open communication with teachers and school administrators. They expect to receive timely updates on their child's progress, behaviour, and any concerns that may arise. Collaborative efforts between parents and educators foster a supportive learning environment where students can flourish.

2. School Involvement:
Parents play a vital role in their child's education. They look forward to actively partaking in school activities, parent-teacher meetings, and volunteering opportunities. By engaging with the school community, parents can develop a deeper understanding of their child's academic and social experiences.

3. Emotional and Social Growth:
Parents recognize the importance of their child's emotional and social growth. They want schools to prioritize comprehensive support systems that address student's mental health and social well-being. Parents appreciate initiatives such as counseling services, anti-bullying campaigns, and character-building programs that foster healthy emotional and social development.

Conclusion: As schools resume for the 2023/2024 academic session, students, teachers, and parents all hold specific expectations. Students aim for academic excellence, a positive learning environment, and personal growth. Teachers strive to deliver effective lessons, provide individualized support, and pursue professional development. Parents seek open communication, school involvement, and support for their child's emotional and social growth. By recognizing and working together to meet these expectations, we can create a fulfilling and successful academic year for all stakeholders involved.

Apple Unveils iPhone 15 With USB-C, Periscope Zoom and A17 Chip

Apple has finally revealed its latest flagship smartphone, the iPhone 15, at its September 12 event. The new device boasts several features that make it stand out from the previous generation, as well as from the competition.

One of the most notable changes is the switch from Lightning to USB-C as the charging and data port. This means that iPhone users can now use the same cable for their MacBook, iPad and other accessories, as well as enjoy faster charging and data transfer speeds. Apple said that the move to USB-C was motivated by environmental and consumer benefits, as it reduces electronic waste and saves money for users¹.

Another major upgrade is the camera system, especially on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which is rumored to be rebranded as the iPhone 15 Ultra. The device features a periscope-style telephoto lens that can achieve up to 6x optical zoom, surpassing the 3x zoom of the iPhone 14 Pro Max and the 2x zoom of the iPhone 15 Pro. The periscope lens uses a prism to bend light and extend the focal length, allowing for clearer and more detailed shots from far distances.

The iPhone 15 also introduces a new processor, the A17 Bionic, which powers the Pro models. The chip is said to offer significant improvements in performance, speed and efficiency, as well as support advanced features and technologies such as machine learning, augmented reality and 5G. The standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models run on the A16 Bionic chip, which is still faster and more powerful than most of its rivals.

Other features that make the iPhone 15 exceptional include a Dynamic Island cutout instead of a notch for all models, which allows for more screen space and a sleeker design; a main 48MP camera for all models, which delivers stunning photos and videos with enhanced clarity and color accuracy; larger batteries for all models, which provide longer battery life and support wireless charging; and a titanium frame for the Pro models, which makes them stronger and lighter than ever before.

The iPhone 15 series is expected to be available for pre-order on September 19 and to ship on September 26. The prices are $799 for the iPhone 15, $899 for the iPhone 15 Plus, $999 for the iPhone 15 Pro and $1,199 for the iPhone 15 Ultra. The colors are Black, White, Yellow and Blue for all models, with an additional Orange/Coral Pink option for the standard models.

THE DARK SIDE OF WEALTH

The Dark Side of Wealth

In the glimmer of wealth and fortune's game,
Lies the tale of money and its darkened fame.
A double-edged sword, it can surely maim,
Transforming hearts, igniting envy's flame.

Once friends now rivals, in greed's cruel embrace,
Money's allure can truly leave a trace.
The bonds of kinship, now lost in the chase,
For power and riches, they've left no space.

Fame's blinding spotlight, it can deceive,
Painting illusions that many believe.
But behind closed doors, some hearts may grieve,
As authenticity, they're forced to leave.

In the shadows of wealth, corruption can breed,
A poison that can cause nations to bleed.
For the lust of money, some plant a dire seed,
Leading to wars where innocents plead.

Beware of the allure of money and fame,
For they can kindle fires, ignite the blame.
Stay true to yourself, hold onto your name,
And remember the cost of this treacherous game.

ECHOES OF CALAMITY

In Nature's grasp, we stand so small,
When tempests rise and mighty waters fall,
Earthquakes rumble, the ground does shake,
In the wake of disaster, hearts do ache.

Amidst trembling earth, a force untamed,
Buildings crumble, lives are maimed,
Families torn from their homes, their kin,
In the aftermath, we begin again.

Raging floods, a relentless tide,
Sweeping dreams and hopes aside,
Fields once lush, now submerged in woe,
Struggles endured, as we learn to grow.

Erosion's subtle, relentless dance,
Slowly erasing our world's expanse,
Coasts recede, and lands retreat,
As we witness nature's bittersweet defeat.

But in these trials, we find our strength,
Communities unite, regardless of length,
Together we rise, to heal and mend,
In the face of disaster, love transcends.

Let us remember, when darkness looms,
In the face of nature's mighty booms,
Human spirit shines, resilient and bright,
As we rebuild, in the aftermath's light.

Scientists Develop Implantable Device that Mimics Kidney Functions

A team of scientists from the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) and the University of Michigan have developed a device that could one day replace the need for dialysis or kidney transplants for people with chronic kidney disease. The device, called a bioreactor, uses human kidney cells grown in the lab and replicates some of the key functions of a kidney, such as regulating water and salt balance, filtering waste and releasing hormones. The device has been successfully tested in pigs for a week with no obvious side effects or issues.

The bioreactor is designed to connect directly to blood vessels and veins, allowing the passage of nutrients and oxygen, much like a transplanted kidney would. Silicon membranes keep the kidney cells inside the bioreactor safe from attack by the recipient's immune system. The team used a type of kidney cell called a proximal tubule cell, which regulates water and salt, as a test case. Co-author H. David Humes, MD, from the University of Michigan, had previously used these cells to help dialysis patients in the intensive care unit with life-saving results.

The scientists plan to fill the bioreactor with different kidney cells that perform vital functions like balancing the body's fluids and releasing hormones to regulate blood pressure – then pair it with a device that filters waste from the blood. The aim is to produce a human-scale device to improve on dialysis, which keeps people alive after their kidneys fail but is a poor substitute for having a real working organ. More than 500,000 people in the U.S. require dialysis several times a week. Many seek kidney transplants, but there are not enough donors, and only about 20,000 people receive them each year. An implantable artificial kidney would be a boon.

The Kidney Project is one of a handful of programmes around the world that is attempting to replace conventional dialysis with portable or implantable artificial kidneys. The effort is boosted by the KidneyX prize, a collaboration between the US Department of Health and Human Services and the American Society of Nephrology, which provides money to jump-start innovation in the field. Dialysis hasn't fundamentally changed since the early 1960s. Portable or, ultimately, implantable devices could improve survival rates and quality of life.

2,000+ Moroccan Earthquake Victims; Cristiano Ronaldo Offers Shelter and Aid.

Cristiano Ronaldo offers shelter and aid to Moroccan earthquake victims

Cristiano Ronaldo, one of the world's most famous footballers, has shown his generosity and compassion by offering shelter and aid to the victims of the devastating earthquake that hit Morocco on Friday night.

The 6.8-magnitude quake, which was the strongest to hit that part of the North African nation in more than 120 years¹, killed at least 2,012 people and injured over 2,059, many of them critically². Thousands of people were left homeless and without access to basic services, as the quake damaged buildings, roads, and infrastructure across several provinces.

Ronaldo, who has a long history of charity work and philanthropy³, announced on his social media accounts that he would open his luxury hotel in Marrakech, which he co-owns with Portuguese businessman Dionisio Pestana⁴, to accommodate some of the quake survivors. He also pledged to donate 1 million euros to the Moroccan Red Crescent to support their relief efforts.

"I am deeply saddened by the tragedy that struck Morocco, a country that I love and admire. My thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the victims, and with all those who are suffering from this disaster. I want to do my part to help them in this difficult time, and I hope that my gesture will inspire others to do the same. We are all one human family, and we need to stand together in solidarity and compassion," Ronaldo wrote in his post.

Ronaldo's hotel, Pestana CR7 Marrakech, which opened in 2020⁵, is located in the heart of the city, near the famous Jemaa el-Fnaa square. The hotel has 164 rooms, two restaurants, a rooftop bar, a spa, a fitness center, and a swimming pool. Ronaldo said that he would personally oversee the arrangements for the quake victims, and that he would visit them as soon as possible.

Ronaldo's fans and followers praised his generosity and kindness, and thanked him for his support to Morocco. Many Moroccan celebrities and public figures also expressed their gratitude and admiration for Ronaldo, calling him a "true hero" and a "role model".

Ronaldo is not the only footballer who has shown solidarity with Morocco after the quake. His former teammate at Real Madrid, Sergio Ramos, also donated 500,000 euros to the Moroccan Red Crescent⁶. Other players, such as Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé, Mohamed Salah, and Paul Pogba, also sent messages of condolence and encouragement to the Moroccan people..
