"Extending sleep opens the door to an effective, feasible way to
improve children's health and performance," says study author Reut
Gruber, director of the Attention Behavior and Sleep Lab at the
Douglas Research Center in Quebec, Canada.
The study
Gruber and his colleagues wanted to find out if the behavior of
elementary school children was affected by how much sleep they got.
The researchers, with the permission of parents, enrolled 34 students
ages 7 to 11 in the study. These were healthy kids who didn't have
sleep problems or behavior or academic issues.
During one week of school, half the students were put to bed earlier
than normal, averaging about 27 minutes more sleep a night. The other
half stayed up later than their routine bedtime, losing about 54
minutes of shut-eye each evening.
The results
Teachers - who didn't know the sleep status of the students - reported
significant differences in how the children behaved and coped with
everyday challenges. Students who were sleep-deprived not only seemed
overly tired, but were more impulsive and irritable than their
well-rested classmates. They were quick to cry, lose their tempers or
get frustrated.
The children who got plenty of sleep had a better handle on their
emotions and were more alert in class.
Sleep experts say these results make sense and provide more evidence
about the importance of sleep.
"We know that sleep deprivation can affect memory, creativity, verbal
creativity and even things like judgment and motivation and being
(engaged) in the classroom," explains Dr. Judith Owens, director of
sleep medicine at Children's National Medical Center in Washington.
"When you're sleepy, (being engaged) isn't going to happen."
And when children have trouble coping with day-to-day situations,
Owens adds, this can affect a child's relationship with teachers, as
well as their success in school, social skills and the ability to get
along with peers.
Tips for parents
So how do you know if your child is getting enough sleep? Children in
elementary school generally need between 10 to 11 hours each evening,
but no two children are alike. Parents should look for clues, experts
say.
"Kids in this age range should not be sleepy during the day," Owens
says. "If the are falling asleep in the car or watching TV, that's a
red flag."
Another way to gauge your child's sleep need is to pay attention to
how much they sleep during school vacations, when they're sleeping
without a time schedule. If they consistently sleep longer than on
school nights, your child probably isn't getting enough sleep.
Take action
Parents can take steps to get their children off to bed at a reasonable hour.
- About a half hour before bedtime, have your kids start winding down
- put down the electronic devices, turn off the TV and shut down the
computer
- Have a consistent bedtime and wake time and try to make this apply
to the weekends as well
- Be good role models for your children. Go to bed at a reasonable
time and talk to them about the importance of sleep
"Consider that (sleep) is one of the building blocks of your child's
health, well-being and academic success," Owens says. "It's equivalent
to good nutrition, exercise and all the other things we try to foster
and provide for our children. You've got to put sleep right up there
at the top of the list."

EBOLA: Ivory Coast Closes Land Border
Ivory Coast becomes the latest African country to close its land
borders to prevent the spread of the deadly Ebola Virus on to its
territory.
Ivory Coast has closed its land borders with Ebola-affected West
African neighbours; Guinea and Liberia, in an attempt to prevent the
world's deadliest outbreak of the virus from spreading onto its
territory, the government announced.
A number of African nations have defied advice from the World Health
Organization (WHO) and put in place restrictions on travel to and from
the countries where Ebola has appeared, which also include Sierra
Leone and Nigeria.
The Philippines on Saturday ordered 115 troops to return home from
peacekeeping operations in Liberia due to the outbreak there.
Ivory Coast, French-speaking West Africa's largest economy, had
previously imposed a ban on flights to and from Sierra Leone, Liberia
and Guinea.
"Faced with new outbreak sites and the reactivation of old sites...the
Ivorian Government decides to close its land borders with sister
republics Guinea and Liberia," said a statement read on state-owned
television late on Friday.
Liberia's Nimba County, which shares a border with Ivory Coast, has
seen the number of Ebola cases balloon in recent weeks. According to
the head of Ebola case management at Liberia's health ministry, Moses
Massaquoi, 65 cases including 25 confirmed patients have now been
reported there.
"The number of cases in Nimba has spiked recently and it is now an
area of concern," Massaquoi told Reuters.
Ebola has killed 1,427 people out of 2,615 known cases identified
since the West Africa outbreak was first identified in Guinea in
March, according to WHO figures released on Friday.
However, families hiding infected loved ones and the existence of
"shadow zones" where medics cannot go mean that the true scale of the
epidemic is unknown, the U.N. health agency said.
The WHO has repeatedly said it does not recommend travel or trade
restrictions for countries affected by Ebola, saying such measures
could heighten food and supply shortages.

Ebola: States Defy FG on Corpse Movement
There are indications that most states of the federation are not
complying with the Federal Government's ban on the inter-state
movement of corpses thus risking the spread of the deadly Ebola virus.
Investigation by PUNCH revealed that most states had yet to put
measures in place to control indiscriminate movement of corpses.
The Federal Government, through the National Council on Health, had
banned inter-state movement of corpses as part of the measures aimed
at preventing the spread of the deadly Ebola virus imported to Nigeria
by a Liberian-American, Patrick Sawyer.
Despite the ban, families of deceased persons and undertakers have
also continued to defy the order.
PUNCH found that corpses were being moved from Lagos State to other
destinations without getting the mandatory government waivers.
The NCH had said only dead bodies with waivers granted by the Federal
Ministry of Health would be transported within and into Nigeria,
adding that such corpses must be conveyed only in ambulances.
The NCH, which is the highest policy making body in the health sector,
had also advised state governments to enact laws for the effective
compliance with the ban.
The Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, had said, "The corpses
of all persons confirmed to have died of EVD must be buried according
to WHO standard protocol.
"Council further directed that the transport of corpses into Nigeria
as well as inter-state transport should be banned until further notice
except with approved waivers that may be issued by the Federal
Ministry of Health."
Chukwu added that corpses from other countries must have waivers from
the FMH and must be carried in only ambulances.
In his advice to the leadership of the National Union of Road
Transport Workers and the National Road Transport Owners, Chukwu had
said, "From today, don't allow any sick person to enter your vehicles
again except he or she produces a medical report which should contain
the nature of the ailment and the fact that other passengers will not
be infected. Only the dead and the sick can transmit the (Ebola)
disease.
"Don't carry any corpse unless you have the waiver which is obtainable
only from the Federal Ministry of Health, duly signed by the Minister.
So you must demand to see a waiver from anybody who may ask you to
carry a dead person.
"Find out from the ministry, the authenticity of the waiver in case
you are in doubt. Without a waiver, we will not allow you to enter
Nigeria and your vehicle will be impounded because Ebola disease is
transmitted mainly by someone who died of the virus and infected
persons."
In spite of this, families have continued to move their dead without
getting the necessary waivers from the government.
A Lagos State resident who pleaded anonymity because of fear of being
punished, during the week transported the body of his late mother who
died in Lagos to his home state with a private car without getting any
waiver.
One of PUNCH correspondents, who saw the vehicle when he was driving
beside the vehicle in a heavy traffic on the Lagos Ibadan Expressway,
found out that the body was packaged in a sitting position to avoid
attempt by the police to stop the movement.
Though the woman was said to have died at home, the resident told the
correspondent that he had to transport the body for burial according
to Islamic injunction and getting a waiver would be difficult and time
consuming, especially as the deceased did not die of Ebola virus.
He added that he could not afford N30,000 to get waiver from the government.
Similarly, a family, who asked not to be named because of fear of
possible arrest, had last week moved the body of their son who died of
cancer to his ancestral home in Imo State without getting any waiver
from the government.
The family source, who spoke with one of PUNCH correspondents on the
telephone, confirmed that the ambulance bearing the corpse was
accompanied by a police patrol team that was paid N100, 000.
The source said, "It was difficult getting the police to lead the
ambulance to Imo State because they were scared of the Ebola virus.
Even when we showed them a medical report stating the cause of the
death, they still declined. But we later got another team which
initially demanded N150,000, but we settled for 100,000. We have since
deposited the body in a morgue in Imo State. We did not get any
waiver."
Also, one of our correspondents saw a corpse- bearing ambulance
opposite the Federal Road Safety Corps office in Ojodu area of Lagos
State at about 11.30pm on Thursday.

Stephen Keshi May Not Return as Super Eagles Coach
Stephen Keshi has appeared to rule himself out of a return as Nigeria
coach after losing patience with the Nigeria Football Federation
(NFF).
Keshi's contract expired on 30 June, shortly after he led Nigeria to
the last 16 at the World Cup, and he had been negotiating a new deal.
He told BBC Sport: "Talks over a new contract shouldn't drag on. I
can't wait any more - the NFF is not serious.
"I have moved on. I can only wish the country well for the future."
Talks had been ongoing since July but a series of delays caused by
problems within the federation, including the sacking and the
Fifa-ordered reinstatement of the governing body's president Aminu
Maigari.
"There's a game in two weeks [Nations Cup qualifier against Congo] but
no-one is thinking about it and at the same time they expect you to
win," Kehsi continued.
"I understand the ongoing crisis facing the federation but the
national team should not suffer from such at this crucial stage.
"Sadly, I also think attention is focused more on the upcoming NFF
elections and the national team is simply not a priority."
The NFF officials are understood to have offered Keshi a new four-year
deal and same $30,000-a-month salary he was paid in his first stint as
manager, while the coach had asked for an increase.
Keshi says he has rejected offers from other African countries while
the negotiations have been going on.
"I've had about seven countries approach me in the last two months but
I kept them all away," he added.
"I love my country and I am aware of the dream our fans had of me
taking this team to the next level.
"While acknowledging the efforts of some people involved in the
negotiation, I think others probably have other important things to
do."
Nigeria have already named a 23-man squad for their upcoming
qualifiers against Congo on 6 September and South Africa four days
later.
The defending champions will also face Sudan in Group A with the top
two advancing to January's finals in Morocco.
Meanwhile, NFF officials say Fifa has endorsed their plan to hold a
general assembly on 26 August to consider and approve a new roadmap
for elections of the body's executive committee.
The assembly will be asked to postpone the elections that were also
due to be held on Tuesday, following unresolved complaints raised by
some candidates.

Facebook-Stalking Wife Finds Out Husband Has 3 Other Wives
The 49-year-old from Newbury, South Carolina was arrested Wednesday
and charged with bigamy after his wife spotted wedding photos of him
and another woman on Facebook, the Associated Press reports.
She turned to investigators, who found a November 2013 marriage
certificate to the other woman.
Investigators also found that Pixley is allegedly married to two
additional women in unions dating back to 1988, according to WIS. Each
of his alleged wives lives in a different South Carolina county.
Newbery County Sheriff Lee Foster told the station that Pixley may
have even more wives. Pixley was "not into wanting to talk" about his
marital status, Foster said.
"[Pixley] had made just a few comments regarding that he thought maybe
it was a misunderstanding, but past that, he didn't have anything else

Priests Smash Coconuts On Devotees' Heads In Weird Ritual
Every year, thousands of devotees travel to a remote village in the
South Indian state of Tamil Nadu to put themselves through a gruesome
ritual that they hope will bring them good health and success. Men,
women and even children willingly permit priests to smash hard
coconuts on their skulls, not minding the risk involved, according to
the Times of India.
Several devotees squat on the floor in a line, waiting patiently as
the temple priests approach with a sack of coconuts. One priest holds
the heads firmly, while the other one brings down the coconuts without
hesitation. The whole process is completed in a matter of minutes.
Some devotees can be seen wincing in pain as the coconuts come
crashing on to their heads. Some massage their heads, while others
promptly collect the broken pieces as holy offerings. Surprisingly,
there are a few who don't flinch at all - these people are often in a
deep meditative state of prayer. Nonetheless, medical staff are always
present to tend to serious injuries.
Doctors warn devotees every year that the practice could actually be
deadly. "There is a certain amount of tolerance for the skull beyond
which it will cause damage," said neurosurgery professor Anil Kumar
Peethambaran. "If the coconut breaks, the energy is dissipated, but
when it doesn't this can cause damage to the skull."
But the staunch devotees don't seem to be worried at all; they're
confident that the deity will protect them. Despite warnings, the
practice has been going on regularly since the 19th century. "My
family has been coming here for years," said one devotee. "Today, four
of us have come for the ritual. The coconuts broke well - we hope it
brings success."

Father Takes Sons To War Zones To Teach Them A Lesson
A Swedish journalist, Carl-Magnus Helgegren, decided to teach his two
young sons who were obsessed with war-based video games a real lesson.
So he took them to visit Israel and Syria to show them the harsh
realities that exist in war-torn regions, and make them realise what
guns are really used for, according to sky News.
After the 10-day trip, the boys were completely transformed. The idea
came at the dinner table one night last year, when Leo, 11, and Frank,
10 begged their father to buy them the latest 'Call of Duty game'. He
was quite concerned with their obsession for the popular shooter - he
wondered if his boys actually realized the real effect that war has on
its victims. So Helgegren devised a brilliant plan to impart a much
needed lesson. He cut a deal with his sons - if they agreed to travel
with him to an area plagued by war and spend time with war victims, he
would buy them any video game of their choice on their return.
"I wanted to show them the negative effects war has once the guns and
the canons have silenced," he explained. "The people affected are
someone's father and brother and sister and mother."
Leo and Frank didn't believe their father at first, but agreed to the
deal when they realized he was serious. So the family of four embarked
on a tour of Israel and the Golan Heights in the occupied parts of
Syria, in April this year. Their first stop was at Jerusalem where
they stayed with an Israeli family, so the boys could get a sense of
the local culture. "I wanted them to meet all parts of society,"
Helgegren explained.
Helgegren took Lee and Frank to a clinic at the camp where "kids were
being stitched up every single day because they had been hit in the
head with the butt of a rifle."
So Helgegren said to his sons: "You don't see this in the game but
this is what you can use a gun for. Guns are being pointed at children
your own age."
The trip completely changed the boys' mindset and helped reduce their
lust for violent video games. They now understand the pains of people
who are separated from their families, according to their father.

the South East, Mr. Osita Okechukwu, on Friday blamed the nationwide
strike embarked on by medical doctors in government hospitals for the
death of his son.
Speaking at the burial of his son, Mathias Okechukwu, in Eke, Enugu
State, Okechukwu also appealed to the federal and state governments to
provide adequate funds for the health sector.
Okechukwu explained that consultant paediatricians were absent as a
result of the strike when his son was rushed to the National Hospital,
Abuja.
The late Mathias passed on on August 10, 2014.
Okechukwu lamented that millions of Nigerians die as a result of
shabby treatment in poorly equipped hospitals.
Urging the government to address the situation, he said, "Even if it
needs to borrow, as we have entered the debt trap again, the
government should please improve funding of the health sector to save
some of us who grossly lack the means to travel abroad for treatment."
He noted that 'scant attention" is paid to the health sector because
the president, governors and local council chairmen find it more
convenient to travel abroad for medical treatment.
Okechukwu said the government was not treating its medical doctors well.
He said, "Otherwise, how can we in the midst of plenty treat our
doctors shabbily and hence encourage their mass exodus?
"Is it good news that the best Nigerian doctors and nurses are found abroad?
"I can't understand why only N5,000 is paid doctors for hazard allowance."
Faulting the Federal Government's decision to stop the training of
resident doctors, he asked, "Does it make sense for the Federal
Government to stop the training of resident doctors?
"I am yet to find good answer for the poor welfare of Nigerian
doctors, especially when they hear of billions being siphoned by
public officials without sanctions."
However, he expressed hope that with the sustenance of democracy in
the country, Nigerians will begin to enjoy the benefits of good
governance.

Military Goes After Runaway Soldiers -Olukolade
The Nigerian military has started going after personnel who absconded
from the Armed Forces.
The Director of Defence Information, Maj. Gen. Chris Olukolade, who
described the act as a grave crime, said the Nigerian military would
arrest those who had absconded.
Olukolade stated this while speaking on issues involving the ongoing
counter terrorism atNigeria News Infomonitored by our correspondent.
He called on members of the public to ensure that deserters were
reported to the military authorities for prompt action.
According to him, any soldier found roaming about without being on
leave or having an authorised pass would most likely be a deserter and
should be reported to the appropriate authorities.
The military spokesman said, "There are deserters; there are deserters
definitely and the deserters are being arrested.
"And in any case, deserters are supposed to be reported to security
agencies and arrested; it is a crime to be a deserter; if you are a
deserter, that is the worst form of military service.
"And I think it is time the public knew some things that should not be
glorified about the soldier; if a soldier is a mutineer, if a soldier
is a deserter, when a soldier demonstrates cowardice, such a person is
not doing anything glorious. Such a person is a disgrace and is
actually operating in the realm of crime; and there is no heroism
whatsoever in it.
"Now the way people are presenting this attitude makes it look as if
they want to feel heroic; you desert your unit, you go about telling
lies of what is happening in the front so that you would look like a
gallant. Such a person should be reported and if possible arrested and
presented to the authorities. If it takes 20 years, a deserter is a
deserter, we will get him."
Olukolade, who spoke on the alleged attack on the former General
Officer Commanding the 7th Division of the Nigeria Army, Maiduguri,
Maj.-Gen. Ahmed Mohammed, said the soldiers involved in the incident
were facing trial.
He said that the military authorities would speak on it after the trial.
Olukolade said, "We have gone beyond investigation. Much as it would
continue to make a case against anyone found behaving unexpectedly in
that incident, a number of people, as a result of that, are definitely
facing trial at the moment; we will speak on it when the trial is over
and it is concluded."

Celine Dion Seeks Fans' Pardon For 'Quitting' Music
Celine Dion announced that she is taking an indefinite break from
music "in order to focus 100 per cent of her attention" on her family.
The 46-year-old singer, whose husband Rene Angelil, 72, is recovering
from an operation to remove a cancerous tumour in his throat, said in
a statement posted on her official website, "I want to devote every
ounce of my strength and energy to my husband's healing and, to do so,
it's important for me to dedicate this time to him and to our
children.
"I also want to apologise to all my fans everywhere, for
inconveniencing them, and I thank them so much for their love and
support."
Dion, who has released 14 studio albums in French and a further 11 in
English, is herself battling an illness that has caused her throat
muscles to swell up, preventing her from performing since July 29,
2014.
The statement said, "Since Rene's surgery last December to remove a
cancerous tumour, it's been a very difficult and stressful time for
the couple as they deal with the day-to-day challenges of fighting
this disease while trying to juggle a very active show business
schedule, and raise their three young children.
"Celine has also been fighting an illness that has caused inflammation
in her throat muscles, and has not been able to perform any of her
scheduled shows in Las Vegas since her last show on July 29. She has
still not recovered from this condition."
The singer was part way through a lengthy residency at Caesars Palace
in Las Vegas, which had recently been extended until 2019. All Las
Vegas shows through to March 2015 have been cancelled, including her
scheduled tour of Asia.
It would be recalled that Dion previously took a break from music from
2000-2002 when her husband was first diagnosed with cancer.
Angélil, Dion's longtime manager, discovered Dion when she was 12
years old. They married in 1994, when Dion was 26, and have three
children together, including twins born in 2010. In a press conference
in July, Dion said that Angélil was doing "really well" despite having
recently stepped down as her manager. She said, "He's working really
hard on his health ... he's really being disciplined, which is not an
easy thing for him."
Dion's most recent album,Loved Me Back To Life, was released in
November and debuted at No. 3 on the UK chart. Based on almost $12m
(N1.9bn) in earnings from her 60 Las Vegas concerts, Billboard named
her the 23rd-highest-paid musician of 2013.
Reportedly worth $500m (N80bn), Celine Dion is one of the wealthiest
female artistes in the world. Apart from the money she makes from
music, she is also an entrepreneur and a promoter of some top brands
in the world.

Luxurious apartments and cars
Celine Dion owns many luxurious properties across America, though she
has put some of them up for sale, including her gorgeous compound on
Florida's Jupiter Island for $72m (N12bn), according toThe Wall Street
Journal.
The home, which is jointly listed by Sotheby's International Realty
agents Joseph Montanaro and Cristina Condon, was custom-built and
designed in 2010 by Celine Dion herself.
She and her manager husband Reneé Angélil bought the lot of land in

President Jonathan Flown To Germany For Medical Treatment
Contrary to official claims that President Goodluck Jonathan travelled
to Germany on a private visit, LEADERSHIP authoritatively gathered
yesterday that the president actually took ill and left for Germany to
seek medical care.
Efforts to get a confirmation from the Presidency failed up until the
time of going to press, as several calls to his spokesman, Dr Reuben
Abati, did not go through and he didn't respond to an email enquiry
either.
Similarly, the senior special assistant to the president on public
affairs, Dr Doyin Okupe, did not pick or return several calls to his
mobile number last night.
President Jonathan left for Germany yesterday after performing the
closing ceremony of the National Conference on Thursday.
Prior to his departure, presidential spokesman Abati had issued a
terse statement saying the president would be making a private visit
to Germany as from Friday (yesterday)and would be accompanied by some
of his principal aides.
It was gathered that the president, on arrival in Germany, headed for
a private hospital for medical check-up.
It could not however be confirmed if he went to the same hospital he
had visited with his wife last year when the first lady faced some
health challenges.
Before his sudden departure for Germany on Thursday, President
Jonathan was billed to host members of the just-concluded National
Conference to a dinner at the Presidential Villa, but the programme
was cancelled at the dying minute.
Although no official reason was given for the cancellation, it was
gathered that the development was connected with the president's state
of health which required urgent attention.
An authoritative source in the Presidency told LEADERSHIP that despite
assurances that the president would return soon from his trip, it was
not likely as his health situation was not too good. He said there was
uneasy calm and anxiety in the Presidential Villa yesterday over the
state of health of the president.
Meanwhile, the situation has also elicited concern from prominent Ijaw
(President Jonathan's ethnic group) political leaders, some of whom
converged on the home of a prominent elder statesman from the ethnic
group in Abuja to deliberate on the matter. A source privy to the
meeting hinted that the Ijaw sons were considering sending a
delegation to visit the president.
The source said before the meeting ended, it was agreed that clearance
would be obtained from the Presidential Villa on whether the president
is in a state to receive visitors before it would be decided on who
would visit him.
Some people had speculated about Mr Jonathan's health just before his
trip to Washington, DC, United States, where he attended the 2014
US-Africa Summit early this month.

Russian Aid Convoy Leaves Ukraine
About 100 lorries from an unauthorised Russian aid convoy have crossed
back over the border from rebel-held eastern Ukraine, officials say.
The convoy was returning from the city of Luhansk, which is held by
pro-Russian separatists who have been battling Ukrainian government
forces.
Meanwhile German Chancellor Angela Merkel has arrived in the Ukrainian
capital Kiev for talks.
On Friday she described the convoy as a "dangerous escalation".
Western officials fear the convoy could be part of a military intervention.
But Kremlin officials say the vehicles are only carrying generators,
food and drink.
The lorries had already been waiting at the border for a week, while
Russia, the Ukrainian government and the Red Cross tried to come to an
agreement on their passage.
The Russians said they could not wait any longer, owing to the
worsening humanitarian situation in eastern Ukraine, which is held by
pro-Russian separatists.
Four months of fighting in the region have left more than 2,000 people
dead. More than 330,000 people have fled flee their homes.

Ebola: First Consultant Hospital Speaks On Late Sawyer
The management of First Consultant Hospital, Obalende, Lagos State,
has spoken on late Liberian-American, Patrick Sawyer who brought the
Ebola Virus Disease to Nigeria, saying it took necessary measures in
line with international standards to prevent the spread of the virus.
In a press statement, it said in spite of denial by Sawyer, who
described himself as a Senior Diplomat from Liberia, adequate measures
were taken, which included, isolating the patient, implementing
barrier nursing and contacting the Lagos State Ministry of Health and
the Federal Ministry of Health.
It said, "A 40-year-old gentleman came into the hospital with symptoms
suggestive of malaria (fever, headache, extreme weakness) on Sunday,
July 20, 2014. He was fully conscious and gave us his clinical history
and told us he is a Senior Diplomat from Liberia. Laboratory
investigations confirmed malaria whilst other test for HIV, Hepatitis
B&C were negative. He was admitted and treatment commenced.
"However, due to the fact that he was not responding to treatment but
rather was developing haemorrhagic symptoms we further questioned him.
He denied having been in contact with any persons with EVD at home, in
any hospital or at any burial."
Having treated for malaria with no significant improvement, the
management carried out tests for possible infectious haemorrhagic
disease, especially Ebola, based on fact that he was from Liberia,
which had recently witness Ebola outbreak.
It said, "We refused for him to be let out of the hospital in spite of
intense pressure, as we were told that he was a senior ECOWAS official
and had an important role to play at the ECOWAS convention in Calabar,
Cross River State.
"The initial test results from LUTH laboratory indicated a signal of
possible Ebola virus, but required confirmation.
"We then took the further step of reaching out to Senior Officials in
the office of the Secretary of Health of the United States of America
who promptly assisted us with contacts at the centres for Disease
Control and World Health Organisation Regional Laboratory Centre in
Senegal.
"Working jointly with the State, Federal Agencies and International
Agencies, we were able to obtain confirmation of Ebola (Zaire strain),
(WHO Regional Center Lab-Senegal/Redeemes lab/LUTH Laboratory). He
afterwards died on July 25, 2014 at about 6.50am.
"All agencies were promptly notified and in consultation with WHO,
Regional Ebola Virus Disease Centre in Conakry, Guinea and Best
Practices, we commenced temporary shut down of the hospital with
immediate evacuation of in-house patients.
"The appropriate professional removal of the body and its incineration
under WHO guidelines, witnessed by all appropriate agencies was
carried out.
"In keeping with WHO guidelines, the hospital is shut down briefly as
full decontamination exercise is currently in progress.

extracted from our hospital and traveling to Calabar we have been able
to prevent the spread of Ebola Virus Disease in Nigeria."

Ribery Not Ready For Bayern Return - Guardiola
Franck Ribery remains at least two weeks away from a return to
competitive action with Bayern Munich, according to Pep Guardiola.
Frenchman Ribery, who recently announced his retirement from
international football, missed the World Cup due to a back injury and
has been troubled with knee problems in recent weeks.
Ribery played in Bayern's pre-season friendly against Guadalajara in
New York at the start of the month, but coach Guardiola has ruled the
former Marseille man out of Friday's Bundesliga opener at home to
Wolfsburg - although fellow winger Arjen Robben could feature.
"Franck will be out for two or three weeks through injury," said the
Spaniard on Thursday. "He still needs time.
"Arjen is fit but hasn't played yet. I'll have to see who is in the
best shape. Then I'll decide who plays."
Guardiola is looking forward to his second season in charge at the
Allianz Arena and hopes to see a slicker version of Bayern this year
as they look to win a third straight German title.
"The Bundesliga is our main objective, it's the most valuable title,"
he added. "We'll work for it every day.

Efforts In Containing Ebola Has Been Fantastic- Soyinka
The Ogun State Commissioner for Health, Mr Olaokun Soyinka on Saturday
commended the efforts of the Federal and Lagos State governments in
containing the spread of Ebola Virus Disease in Nigeria.
He said the efforts have been "fantastic", adding that "if you read
the media reports there is a lot of good words being said about the
Lagos State response; about the speed at which it was picked up and
the subsequent response involving Federal Government, partners to
support Lagos.
"I think we have seen real team work and the coming together of real
expertise", he said.
He however noted that "containing such epidemics is all about
prevention; it is all about the robustness of your basic health care
system" adding that "that is why Ebola has got us all nervous because
we are still trying to get our health systems back on their feet".
Dr Soyinka also hoped that "after the thing (Ebola outbreak) has died
down, we will have a lasting positive effect, because everybody has
seen that we are vulnerable on all these things that we take for
granted and we have to put things in place".
With the proximity of the state to the epicenter of the outbreak in
West Africa and Lagos, Dr Soyinka said, the state government began
sensitising health officials after a suspected case of the disease was
reported in Ghana.
He added that state has learnt from the experience of Lagos, where the
first Ebola case was recorded in Nigeria. This experience, according
to him, has put the state on alert in case of any eventualities.
"We have not only been training our health care staff and giving them
reminders of what this disease is like, what it presents and what to
do, we have also set up three isolation units, buy in the necessary
protective gears", he said.
He further added that the centres are located in the three senatorial
districts of the state, insisting that "these resource that we have
put in place will remain assets that will strengthen the healthcare
system of the areas they are situated and the state at large, "even
after the scare of the outbreak has been contained".
Dr Soyinka commended the efforts of First Consultants Medical Centre
in diagnosing the disease within 24 hours, adding that "surveillance
and picking it up is the key, because it reduces the number of
contacts" and allows for "early treatment and care which has shown
reduces the death rate".
The Minister of Health, Prof Onyebuchi Chukwu, confirmed the two new
cases of the Ebola, who are spouses of dead victims of the disease and
are currently been treated in lagos.
This brings the total number of cases, including the index case to 14,
with five deaths and five survivors, while four are currently being
treated.
The Federal Government also has approved the release of N200m to the
Lagos State in the efforts aimed at containing the spread of the Ebola
Virus Disease, seperate from the N1.9 billion intervention fund
approved by President Goodluck Jonathan.
As part of measures to curb the Ebola spread, states government have
embarked on sensitization programme to help educate Nigerians about
the disease and how to prevent it.
WHO Commends Nigeria's Efforts In Containing Ebola
The World Health Organisation (WHO) had last week commended efforts
made in containing the spread of the Ebola Virus Disease in Nigeria.
A comment posted on their website
said "the situation in Lagos, Nigeria, where the first imported case
was detected in July, looks reassuring".
It further noted that "Intensive contact tracing, conducted by
Nigerian health officials and staff from the US Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, has not, so far, identified any further
confirmed cases outside the initial transmission chain.
"The intensity of the search and monitoring effort raises cautious
optimism that further spread of the virus in Nigeria can be stopped.
The search for additional cases continues, as does the current high
level of vigilance",
"At present, the city's 12 confirmed cases are all part of a single
chain of transmission", it said.

Brother Of James Foley Says US'Could Have Done More' To Secure His Release
That was the core of the message Friday from Michael Foley, the
brother of the American journalist James Foley, beheaded this month by
his ISIS captors.
Michael Foley told CNN's Anderson Cooper he hopes Western nations get
on the same page when it comes to dealing with kidnappers from
militant groups like ISIS -- saying that having some European nations
pay ransoms while the United States doesn't sends an inconsistent
message.
He hopes that communication improves, not just among nations, but
between governments and captors. He hopes others understand James'
passion for journalism, to shed light on stories and truths others may
never see. He hopes people honor him by giving to a Marquette
University scholarship fund, go.mu.edu/remember-foley, set up in his
honor.
And Michael Foley hopes others can find comfort -- and strength -- like
his family has in how his brother acted in his darkest and final
moments, as seen in the horrific video of his killing posted online.
"Jim didn't flinch. He had the courage," Michael Foley, 38, said.
"I'm certain that he put himself in a position to be first in line
(among the captives to be killed), and he wanted us to be strong. And
that is the message that he was sending, without sending it."
Even as ISIS touted the journalist's killing and threatened others,
the world has responded -- in words at least.
Officials and groups from all over have condemned it. The latest was
the U.N. Security Council, ripping the "heinous and cowardly"
execution, which it said illustrates the growing danger facing
journalists reporting out of Syria.
The United States hasn't halted its military campaign against ISIS
forces in Iraq since the shooting; in fact, it has threatened to step
up their efforts in Iraq and neighboring Syria against a group that
Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel described as exhibiting evil "beyond
anything we have seen."

17-Year-Old Marriage Dissolved Over Disagreement On Sex
A Mapo Customary Court in Ibadan on Friday dissolved a 17-year-old
marriage between Rukayat and Rasaq Muniru, over disagreement on sexual
intercourse.
The judge, Mr. Ademola Odunade, in his judgment, held that the court
dissolved the marriage because it considered the wellbeing of everyone
important.
"The court had fulfilled the mandatory adjournments, but Muniru still
refused to show up which meant admission of guilt.
He ordered Muniru to pay a monthly feeding allowance of N6,000 as well
as take responsibility for the education of the children.
Rukayat had told the court that Muniru was so shameless that he did
not mind having sexual intercourse with her in the presence of their
grown up children.
"Muniru rented a single face-to-face apartment room for me at Olunloyo
Area of Ibadan with four grown up children, boys and girls, because he
has married another wife.
"He sees nothing wrong in having sexual intercourse with me in their
very presence as matured as they are, 15, 13 years of ages.
"Whenever the children saw us making love, I used to remind him of the
negative implications it might have on them, especially the need for
another room for them.
"Anytime I refused him sex, he beats the hell out of me, injures me
and tears my clothes. On a number of occasions, I reported him to his
parents but there was no change.

whether they are educated or not," Rukayat said.

170 Illegal Immigrants Missing Off Libyan Coast
A wooden boat carrying some 170 illegal immigrants was missing off the
Libyan coast near Tripoli on Friday, according to a coast guard
official.
The stowaways were believed from sub-Saharan African countries and
intended to go to Italy. Their boat was feared sank some 60 kilometers
east of Tripoli in the Guarakouzi area, the official who declined to
disclose his name told Xinhua.
The official said the coast guards were searching the boat and
survivors in the area.
Libya has long been a transit point for migrants seeking to reach
Malta, Italy, and other places in Europe because of its proximity and
relatively loose border control. The Libyan government since earlier
July has established an agency in cooperation with neighboring
countries to combat illegal immigration and smuggling.

Hamas Executes 18 Suspected Informers
Hamas has killed 18 Palestinians suspected of collaborating with
Israel, a day after Israel killed three of the group's top military
commanders in an airstrike on a house in southern Gaza Strip,
witnesses and a Hamas website said.
A Gaza security official said the first batch involved 11 people who
were killed early on Friday at the Gaza City police headquarters.
Six more were killed later in the day in a public execution in a
central Gaza square, according to a Hamas website and witnesses cited
by Reuters news agency.
Three suspected collaborators were also killed on Thursday.
The victims, their heads covered and hands tied, were shot dead by
masked gunmen dressed in black in front of a crowd of worshippers
outside a mosque after prayers, witnesses and al-Majd, a pro-Hamas
website, said.
The Gaza security official said the 11 men had previously been
sentenced by Gaza courts, reported the Associated Press news agency.
He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to
discuss the incident with reporters.
Al Jazeera's Jacky Rowland, reporting from West Jerusalem, said
Israel's intelligence services rely, in part, on informers to pinpoint
the whereabouts of Hamas leaders.
"Israel has a long and successful history of recruiting collaborators
and informers both in the West Bank and in the Gaza Strip, and they do
so through a variety of different means: sometimes it is financial
inducements; other times it is blackmail, bullying, threats, promises
[and] maybe intimidating family members," Rowland said.
She said that by publicising the retribution brought down on the 18
people, Hamas was sending a deterrent to other Palestinians.
Child killed
The announcement came as five Palestinians were killed by an Israeli
air strike, the latest since Egyptian-led ceasefire talks collapsed
three days ago.
Ashraf al-Kidra, a Gaza health official, said on Friday some of the
victims were workers at a livestock farm that was hit in the
airstrike.
The Israeli military said it carried out 20 airstrikes early on
Friday, targeting rocket launchers and weapons sites. It said a mortar
strike from Hamas critically injured one child in the Negev region
area.
Friday's fighting came as funerals were held for three senior Hamas
commanders killed by Israeli air raids.
Al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas' military wing, said Mohamed Abo Shamaleh,
Raed al-Attar and Mohamed Barhoum were killed in an attack in Rafah on
Thursday, little more than a day after an attempt on the life of its
leader Mohammed Deif.
The killed commanders' supporters later took over the streets as their
funeral procession snaked through Rafah, which bears scars of Israeli
bombing from previous days.
Another 31 people were killed in other Israeli strikes in Gaza since
on Thursday, raising the overall death toll to 2,087 in 46 days of
conflict.
Israel meanwhile said it was rotating 10,000 troops - meaning fresh
soldiers were being prepared for possible future operations - a day
after the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, said Israel's
offensive may be an extended operation.
Hamas condemned the assasinations, with Sami Abu Zuhri, the group's
spokesman, calling them a "big Israeli crime" for which it would pay.
The fighting resumed three days ago after Egyptian attempts to broker
an end to the monthlong war, with Palestinians firing dozens of
rockets and Israel responding with airstrikes across Gaza.

Gmail Smartphone App Hacked By Researchers
US researchers say they have been able to hack into Gmail accounts
with a 92% success rate by exploiting a weakness in smartphone memory.
The researchers were able to gain access to a number of apps,
including Gmail, by disguising malicious software as another
downloaded app.
Gmail was among the easiest to access from the popular apps tested.
The hack was tested on an Android phone, but the researchers believe
it could work on other operating systems.
A Google spokeswoman said the technology giant welcomed the research.
"Third-party research is one of the ways Android is made stronger and
more secure," she said.
The research is being presented later at a cybersecurity conference in
San Diego by academics from the universities of Michigan and
California.
Other apps hacked included H&R Block, Newegg, WebMD, Chase Bank,
Hotels.com and Amazon.
The Amazon app was the hardest to access, with a 48 per cent success rate.
The hack involves accessing the shared memory of a user's smartphone
using malicious software disguised as an apparently harmless app, such
as wallpaper.
This shared memory is used by all apps, and by analysing its use the
researchers were able to tell when a user was logging into apps such
as Gmail, giving them the opportunity to steal login details and
passwords.
"The assumption has always been that these apps can't interfere with
each other easily," said Zhiyun Qian, an assistant professor at the
University of California and one of the researchers involved in the
study.
"We show that assumption is not correct, and one app can in fact
significantly impact another and result in harmful consequences for
the user."
In another example the researchers were able to take advantage of a
feature of the Chase Bank app which allows customers to pay in cheques
by taking pictures of them with their device's camera.
The researchers were able to access the camera to steal the pictures
as they were being taken, giving them access to personal information
including signatures and bank details.
The tests were carried out on Android phones, but the researchers
believe the attacks could be successful on other operating systems,
including Windows and the iOS system developed by Apple.

Collapse APGA Into PDP, Says Ezeibe, PDP Chieftain
A Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, chieftain in Anambra State, Chief
Benedict Obiora Ezeibe has decried the conditional support which the
national leadership of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) have
decided to give President Goodluck Jonathan's 2015 presidential
ambition.
Chief Ezeibe told reporters in Enugu, yesterday, that APGA should be
collapsed into the PDP rather than such proposal, coming from its
national leadership which he accused of hypocrisy.
Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, his predecessor in
office, Mr. Peter Obi and National Chairman of APGA, Chief Victor Umeh
had said that the conditions upon which their party would support
President Jonathan in 2015 presidential election is, among others,
giving their party members high profile Board appointments.
Chief Ezeibe, who was also Chairman of the PDP Finance Committee in
the state, described the demand as "mere blackmail and an
opportunistic outburst."
"For four years, you are telling us there is no APGApresidential
candidate; does that make it (APGA) a political party?" he asked,
adding: "What's the essence of having a party that will not present a
presidential candidate during elections?" He further re-stated: "We
should collapse APGA into PDP. What do APGA people have that will
deliver the president in 2015? We want them to have their own
presidential candidate as a political party." He added sarcastically:
"Is APGA a national party or Igbo party? Or is it an Igbo party for a
particular Local Government Area in Anambra State?"
According to him, PDP does not, in any way, need APGA todeliver
President Jonathan in next year's presidential poll. "It is important
to clear the air at this stage so that our brothers and sisters in
APGA are not deceived or cowed into isolated Local Government Party.
PDP has a good product and candidate and we do not need APGA to vote
him in. In 1999 and 2003 President Olusegun Obasanjo was voted in
without APGA, again in 2007, Musa Yar'Adua won without APGA support so
what are we talking about? APGA or no APGA, PDP will deliver its
candidate, Jonathan in 2015," he said.
In the opinion of Ezeibe, nobody should blame the APGA National
Assembly members for their recent defection to the PDP since they saw
clearly the handwriting on the wall. "Nigeria is an indivisible
country; if you cannot beat them, you join them. How do you blame Uche
Ekwunife and Chuma Nzeribe for dumping APGA back to PDP? It was PDP
that made her what she is today, including making her Chairman, House
Committee on Environment," according to Ezeibe.
Ezeibe advised the leadership of APGA to tow the path of best
democratic practices by engaging in dialogue with PDP, "the party
that produced President Jonathan," because "if you like the product
of the party, you must also accept the party; your support for
Jonathan will be more meaningful if you join the party, PDP."

UN Rehabilitates Escaped Chibok Schoolgirls
Some of the Chibok schoolgirls abducted by the Boko Haram sect but
later escaped, are currently being rehabilitated, the United Nations
has said.
In a statement on the UN website, the United Nations Population Fund
said, in collaboration with the World Health Organisation and the
United Nations Children's Fund, it was setting up clinics and
providing health screening for any of the girls coming back, as well
as educating those who had escaped.
The representative of the UNFPA in Nigeria, Ms. Rati Ndhlovu, was
quoted as saying, "The girls are running from home and they have no
menstruation pads and have nothing to use. They need water. They need
the basic things that keep a woman dignified".
The statement further said the UNFPA had distributed much-needed
essentials including "dignity kits" that include sanitary napkins.
The UNFPA added that it was educating the girls about healthy timing
of pregnancies.
Ndhlovu added, "The girls are asked to question becoming pregnant
during times of insecurity. It may not be the best time to be pregnant
when you can hardly sleep in your house, when you are running all the
time.
"With most health clinics closed and a shortage of health workers, the
UN and its partners are leading and supporting coordination efforts to
ensure synergies around interventions. In that regard, the UN is
working with local non-governmental organisations and engaging the Red
Cross on logistical matters".
The fund also said it was training traditional and religious leaders
on how to work with their communities to address certain challenges.
It added that the programmes are aimed at changing attitudes so that
the returning girls are not stigmatised and ignored based on their
experiences.
"Initially, the girls didn't want to hear about school or go back to
school because they were at school when this happened to them, but
then they attended a vigorous psychosocial clinic programme, and at
the end, they all wanted to go back to school. Now, they are ready to
go back to school", the UN official said.
According to the statement, another session was held for men and boys
of the communities to involve them in creating a safe space for the
girls to return to.
The male folks were said to have discussed ways to ensure that girls
are not abused and that when they come back they are fully integrated.
Also, a separate group of men were reportedly championing for the
rights of the girl child in terms of education and health.
Ndhlovu said, "The UN family has not forgotten the girls".
She added that restoring the dignity and integrity of the returning
schoolgirls is instrumental in reintegrating them back into a "safe
space" in society.

Boko Haram Overruns Police Training College In Gwoza
Gwoza town has been lost to the Boko Haram insurgents, who invaded a
well-known Nigerian Police training college in the Borno town
Gwoza town is located 183 kilometres south of Maiduguri, the capital
of troubled Borno State, North-East Nigeria.
A security source revealed to journalists in Maiduguri that the
training camp was finally overrun by the insurgents on Wednesday after
running battle a day earlier.
The militants, who numbered several hundred, stormed the police
college with five armoured tanks they had earlier seized from Nigerian
soldiers who had had made several unsuccessful attempts to dislodge
the sect from Gwoza over the last two weeks, reports Sahara Reporters,
citing police sources.
Another source disclosed that numerous trainees were either killed or
seriously injured by the militants who carried out the assault.
"Those who survived the attack had to run to the mountains nearby,"
said the source. He added that some of the trainees managed to escape
to neighbouring Adamawa State.
A police source told SR that the surging militants blew up an armored
tank stationed at the gate of the training camp before gaining
entrance into the school and wreaking havoc.
Boko Haram had two weeks ago seized much of Gwoza town, hoisting the
sect's flag and appointing an Emir to administer the town, in an
action similar to the activity of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.
The town's traditional ruler and several of his subjects had escaped
the town following attacks by the insurgents.

Woman Dies Over Ebola Scare In Ekiti
Professor Olusola Fasubaa, Ekiti State Commissioner for Health on
Thursday, announced that a woman (names withheld) died over rumored
Ebola outbreak in the state, after being rejected by four private
hospitals.
According to Vanguard, the commissioner, who made this known at a
press briefing said the victim, who was a staff of the Comprehensive
Health Centre, Ogotun, was said to have vomited and collapsed in the
premises of the State Ministry of Health, and was quickly rushed to an
hospital where she was rejected because of the text messages
circulated by some unidentified health workers whom tagged her Ebola
patient.
"On 20th August, 2014, a 55-year-old health care worker at Ogotun-
Ekiti, who was said not to have had any complaints of illness in the
last two months and no current history of travel outside the state
(according to her neighbours) got to the Data Bank of the Ministry of
Health at about 1.pm and collapsed after coughing out blood and
subsequently vomited and she was immediately tagged Ebola victim
without an adequate history taken and people started running away. The
woman subsequently died in the late evening. The unnecessary write-up
through the social media by some doctors in the state is uncalled for
and counter-productive to the efforts of the state government in
containing and curtailing the spread of the virus"Fasubaa narrated.
Fasubaa, who lamented the incident assured that there was no known
case of the disease in the state and warned that sending callous
messages through the Short Message Service (SMS) could lead to
avoidable death of innocent and non-Ebola patients.
He cautioned against creating unjustifiable panic through
indiscriminate spreading of unsubstantiated rumours about spurious
cases of Ebola.
It would be recalled that on August 18, 2014, the Kwara State
Committee on Control and Prevention of Ebola Virus Disease also
announced that a seven-month old baby suspected to be suffering from
the Ebola disease in the state died of illness said to be related to
malaria.

messages through the Short Message Service (SMS) could lead to
avoidable death of innocent and non-Ebola patients.
He cautioned against creating unjustifiable panic through
indiscriminate spreading of unsubstantiated rumours about spurious
cases of Ebola.
It would be recalled that on August 18, 2014, the Kwara State
Committee on Control and Prevention of Ebola Virus Disease also
announced that a seven-month old baby suspected to be suffering from
the Ebola disease in the state died of illness said to be related to
malaria.
Ebola: Late Patrick Sawyer's Widow Apologizes For Her Husband's Actions
As tributes continue to pour in for the brave consultant physician,
late Dr. Ameyo Stella Adadevoh, who prevented what could have been a
health disaster when she reportedly had to restrain the late
American-Liberian, Patrick Sawyer, who was diagnosed with the deadly
Ebola Virus Disease at the hospital where she worked, First
Consultants, in Lagos State, Sawyer's widow, Mrs. Decontee Sawyer,
yesterday said that she shared the pains of the family of the late
female doctor.
Dr. Adadevoh died of the deadly virus disease on Tuesday, August 19,
after being infected by Sawyer, who brought Ebola into the country.
In response to an email query by a Leadership Newspaper correspondent,
Mrs. Sawyer expressed sadness that her late husband caused so much
damage both in Liberia and Nigeria with the Ebola virus.
Mrs Sawyer said: "I share the pains that the family members of the
Nigerian doctor are going through. It is just a pity that Patrick had
to cause this damage both in Liberia and Nigeria".
Speaking in a letter, which was received by the newspaper yesterday,
Mrs Sawyer, a resident of Minnesota, USA, apologised for the seeming
heartlessness of her open letter, asking Nigerians to be mindful of
her daughters, and not curse the Sawyer name, even if they curse her
late husband.
The US-based widow opened up on her private life, and how Mr. Sawyer
moved in with another woman in Liberia, abandoning her even while she
was seven-month pregnant.
She blamed what she termed 'bigmanism' for the decayed health system
of Liberia and the high number of deaths in the country as a result of
Ebola.
"I want to reach out to them and express how deeply saddened and sorry
I am for their loss and their pain. I do apologise if my words have
cost anyone who is grieving more pain. I fall on my knees and ask God
for his healing power for all of those who are still infected with
Ebola. I pray for all of the families whose loved ones were taken away
by this merciless killer Ebola, especially those affected by Patrick's
actions.
"Ebola didn't start with Patrick in Liberia, as we both know. Ebola
was in Liberia from a traveler from Guinea since February of this
year. The government knew about it and did nothing. Many Liberians,
including me, called out to the government then to close the borders.
They didn't do so until one of their own, Patrick (Sawyer), died in
July.
"Many people died before Patrick and their lives were just as
important. That is my frustration. Ebola didn't have to go to Nigeria,
Africa's most populated country, had the Liberian government taken
drastic actions sooner. I, too, have family members and friends in
Nigeria, and now they are at risk because of Patrick's actions.
"In spite of my anger and disappointment with him, I don't believe
that he did this with evil intent (I could be wrong). I believe his
actions were that of a desperate man. And sad for everyone involved,
Nigeria was closer than the U.S. This is just my take on what he could
have been thinking (of course, I could be wrong).
"My regret is that I was so caught up in my own pain and frustration
that I neglected to see the pain of the innocent people both in
Liberia and Nigeria who are affected by Patrick's actions. For that, I
am deeply sorry. The last thing I wanted to do was to cause them pain.
"It is a pain I know. It is a pain I don't want them to have", she stressed.
Decontee, a mother of three, further said that she couldn't apologize
for her late husband's actions because she did not cause them,
stressing that while alive, he did a lot of things she did not like,
including his unfortunate last trip to Nigeria.
"Going to Nigeria was one of them. His act was one of a desperate man.
Many Nigerians and Liberians are affected because of that act of
desperation", she said.

Policeman Attempted To Shoot Abolurin, Others - NSCDC
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, on Friday, alleged that
a policeman attempted to shoot its Commandant-General, Dr. Ade
Abolurin, and other security officers and officials from the
Attorney-General's office while on inspection tour of items seized
from oil pipeline vandals at Ikorodu, Lagos.
The NSCDC Public Relations Officer, Emma Okeh, in a statement in
Abuja, alleged that Abolurin was with other personnel from the
Nigerian Army, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, and others
when a suspected Police Inspector attempted to open fire on them.
He said that Abolurin who is the Chairman of a committee on pipeline
vandalism constituted by the AG were inspecting items seized from some
vandals when a police team led by an unidentified Inspector threatened
to gun them down.
Okeh stated that the aim of the police team was to frustrate the work
of the committee members.
He said, "The attack was orchestrated by the arrest of some suspected
vandals and oil thieves in possession of petroleum products in several
jerry cans, including two big Cotonou boats.
"The suspected police team who came in an unmarked danfo bus carrying
AK47 riffles challenged the CG that they are in charge, so, he has no
right to visit the area because it belongs to the police."
"It is however unclear if the suspected officer was working on a
written script by a superior authority or just acting in his own
capacity as a vandal in uniform. What is however clear is that, this
is the umpteenth time that officers and men of the corps has been
brazenly harassed, molested, assassinated or maimed by officers of the
Nigeria police in recent time in the cause of carrying out their
legitimate assignments.
"Still fresh in our memory is the killing of two men of the anti
vandal squad of the Lagos state command of NSCDC namely AIC Gabriel
Adaji and IC Innocent Akegbe by the police in 2013."
But the Police denied that there was a confrontation between its men
and the Committee members.
"There was no confrontation between the police and the committee
members, we deny that incident," the Force Public Relations Officer,
Emmanuel Ojukwu claimed.
