Imo State Pensioners Call On State Government To Pay Over Six Months Arrears

The pensioners in Imo State under the aegis of Nigerian Union of
Pensioners have called on the State government to pay up over 6 months
pension arrears owed to pensioners in the state.

The call was at a news conference at the Union headquarters in Owerri,
the state's capital on Saturday.

Addressing a news conference at the union headquarters, the Imo State
Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners, Mr Gideon Ezeji, said
having given the state government a 14 day ultimatum, if the State
Government fails to address their plight, they would give the State
Government an additional 7-days.

Mr Ezeji further said that at the lapse of the 21-days ultimatum, if
nothing is done, the Union would result to a state wide protest
through the streets of Owerri until the issues are addressed.

Expressing regret on the recent development in the state, the former
chairman of the Union in the state, Mr Emeka Onwumere said it is
unfortunate that Governor Okorocha who used to be a pensioner-friendly
Governor in the early days of his administration, is no more.

Speaking to Channels Television's in Imo State, the Secretary to the
Government of Imo State, Jude Ejiogu, appealed to the senior citizens
to be patient with the State Government as all their plights would be
addressed in due time.

Mr Ejiogu said the verification exercise is not a delay tactics not to
pay pensioners but an avenue to check ghost pensioners who defraud the
system.

The 21- day ultimatum started July 16.

How We Kidnapped Kids From Churches – Suspect

For Gabriel Ogunsawe, engaging in crime seemed the easiest way to
come out of his unpleasant situations as he joined a notorious kidnap
gang that specialises in kidnapping little children from church.
According to the 26-year-old father of one, who is currently cooling
off in one of the dreaded cells at the State Criminal Intelligence and
Investigations Department, SCIID, Panti, Yaba, Lagos; he had
participated in three different kidnappings of children. He stated
that his first operation was successful but luck ran out on him on his
second attempt. He was arrested, arraigned in court and remanded in
Kirikiri prisons for about a year. But no sooner than he got his
freedom, he took to the same crime again, he was never twice lucky.
Speaking to Crime Guard, Ogunsawe said: "I am from Ijebu-Ode in Ogun
State. I am a National Diploma, Accounting student of Lagos State
Polytechnic. I was arrested because I was involved in the kidnap of a
young child of about four years from Amazing Grace Church in Palm
groove area. I was introduced into kidnapping business by a friend
called Olayinka.
"I have known him for over six years. It was Olayinka who came up
with the kidnapping idea. My role was to collect the ransom from the
parents of the victim. This is not the first time we have engaged in
kidnapping of little children. In fact, I have engaged in three
kidnappings. The first one was successful while the last two were
not.
I was arrested after the second kidnapping while attempting to cash
the ransom at the bank but my friend Olayinka, escaped. I was in
Kirikiri for almost a year before I was released. When I returned from
prison, I was jobless when Olayinka came and lured me into it again.
Their mode of operation
"Normally, Olayinka goes into any church of his choice on Sunday
morning, sits like a member inside the church and monitors the
activities and movement of worshippers in the church. When he is
certain that he can lure a child out of the church premises unnoticed,
he quickly lures the child with biscuit or toys. After successfully
abducting the victims, he takes them to another big church located
very far from the church where the children were kidnapped.
We never killed or sold any child. We only keep the child for a day
and ensure we get whatsoever ransom we need to get from the victim's
parents. We ensure that we get the ransom first thing on Monday
morning before the child will be seen. He abandons a large envelope
addressed to the pastor in the church with a phone number. Once they
contact us through the number, we send bank details to the parents
of the victim.
"The first kidnap operation was in a Redeemed Christian Church in
Shomolu area and it was successful. We were paid N300,000 but
Olayinka gave me N70,000 only, as he said we incurred some expenses,
that was why he took the larger sum. Unfortunately, the second
operation was unsuccessful as I was arrested, arraigned in court and
remanded in prison from June 2013 to January 10 2014.
Honestly, I didn't need anyone to tell me to stay away from crime
after my release from the prison but I didn't have a choice. When I
was released, I started squatting with my cousin, Akorede, in Akilo
Street close to Lady-Lak area. That was after I was ejected from the
rented apartment where I lived because I was unable to pay the rent.
My wife and son had to go live with her parents in Ota.
"This last operation, Olayinka initially, asked the victim's parents
to pay N700,000 but, they said they will pay N250,000. They later
sent N3,000 airtime to Olayinka. He transferred N1,500 to my line
the next day after I confronted him for collecting the ransom behind
me. Because I was broke, I transferred N750 to my cousin Akorede, who
I was squatting with.
We used an old registered line of mine for the transaction. It was
that line that he used to transfer the air time to my main line. It
was through the transferred airtime that Akorede was arrested,
unknown to me.

Boko Haram Waxing Stronger, Captures 5 LGs In Yobe, Borno

There are indications the Boko Haram insurgents are waxing stronger in
the North Eastern region and have captured five local government areas
in Yobe and Borno States.

This was confirmed by the governors of the affected states, Ibrahim
Gaidam of Yobe and Kashim Shettima of Borno, This Day reports.

According to the National Economic Council (NEC), who spoke to state
house correspondents after their meeting in Abuja, Shettima and Gaidam
told them the insurgents were still hiding in Sambisa forest.

The governors were said to have called for increased military
deployment and provision of sophisticated military equipment in those
areas.

In his remarks, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who presided over the
meeting, regretted that the insurgency had affected the economic life
of the North-east and the country as a whole.

He therefore called on the council to speak as a team and put pressure
on the service chiefs to increase their effort in battling the Boko
Haram insurgency.

This disclosure was a disappointing departure from what the Nigerian
military and the neighbouring armies of Chad, Cameroun and Niger
accomplished in the last months of former President Goodluck
Jonathan's tenure.

The troops had recaptured all the territories occupied by the
insurgents and had them on the run before Jonathan handed over to
President Muhammadu Buhari on May 29.

Since Buhari took over power, the insurgents have renewed their
attacks. There have been suicide bomb attacks almost on a daily basis
and hundreds of people have been killed in less than two months.

On July 22, multiple bomb blasts rocked Gombe, the capital of Gombe state.

Buhari Goofs Again: Says Chibok Girls Were Abducted From Their ‘Hotels’

The aftermath of the visit of President Muhammadu Buhari to the United
States recently would not be forgotten so soon as the President, while
speaking to a group of Nigerians in Washington D.C, mistakenly
mentioned that the school girls kidnapped last year in Chibok local
government in Borno state, were abducted from "their hotels" instead
of "their hostels".

While speaking at the United States, National institute of Peace,
Buhari said: In the face of abduction of innocent school girls from
their hotels, indiscriminate bombings of civilians in markets and
places of worship, our forces have remained largely impotent, because
they do not possess the appropriate weapons and technology which we
could have had.

Buhari has made several slips in the past, some of which include
calling his own party, All Nigerian People's Congress, referring to
his vice as, Yemi Osibande instead of Yemi Osinbajo. Also during his
trip to Germany, Nigerian president referred to the Chancellor of
Germany, Angela Merkel as President Mishelle and called her country
West Germany.

It would be recalled that President of the United States, Barrack
Obama also Goofed during the meeting with the Nigerian President,
saying Nigeria is a country in East Africa.

South African Police Beat Nigerian To Death [PHOTO]

The President of Nigeria Union in South Africa, Ikechukwu Anyene, on Thursday, criticized the killing of a 30 year old Nigerian in Hillbrow, Johannesburg.

Mr Emeka Ezinteje, Public Relations Officer of the union, told NAN in Johannesburg that the union decried the incident after receiving the report.

NAN recalls that the Nigerian, Nonso Odo, from Amangwu-Nkwerre, Imo State, on Thursday, was allegedly beaten to death by South African Police officers.

Ezinteje said reports indicated that the deceased, who was a barber, quarreled with a fellow Nigerian in their business centre.

“After the quarrel, the fellow Nigerian stopped a police patrol team. The barber ran when he saw the patrol team.”

According to Ezinteje, the police patrol went after the victim; 30 minutes later, the police brought back the lifeless body of the barber.

“Not satisfied with the police report, some members of the union went to see the corpse in hospital.”

He said Sgt. Nengobeni, a South African police officer at the hospital, denied that the police killed him.

The officer said the police were flagged down by somebody while the victim took to his heels.

Nengobeni said by the time the police got to the victim, he was tired and gasping for breath and was pronounced dead on getting to the hospital.

Ezinteje said the union suspected foul play and would get to the root of the case.

“We have also received reports by eyewitnesses that Odo was beaten to death.”

“We have ordered a post mortem to ascertain the cause of Odo’s death. The union will also take this case to the Independent Police Investigative Department, for more investigation.”

“The department is responsible for investigating wrong doings by police officers,” he said.

He also said the incident had been reported to Nigeria`s Consulate General in Johannesburg and Hillbrow Police Station, also in Johannesburg.

The Error Obama Made While Talking, During Buhari’s Visit

President Muhammadu Buhari's visit to the United States of America
(USA) has been very prominent in the news recently.

The visit of Buhari is expected to strengthen the bilateral
relationship between the U.S.A and Nigeria in many aspects of both
countries' economic agenda.

Buhari's visit is also an opportunity for Nigeria to seek a firm and
committed support of the United States in helping Nigeria curb the
excesses of the Boko Haram terrorist group causing havoc in the
country.

The buzz that surrounded Buhari's visit has overshadowed a major goof
the U.S president committed while speaking to his counterpart.

Obama had described Nigeria as a country in the eastern part of Africa
instead of West Africa while discussing with Buhari.

According to Washington Post, Obama who was speaking to reporters
before the meeting commenced said, "the U.S. hoped to partner with
Nigeria so that Nigeria ends up being not only an anchor of prosperity
and stability in the eastern part of the continent, but can also be an
outstanding role model for developing countries around the world."

Buhari was accompanied by Professor Adebowale Adefuye, Nigeria's
Ambassador to the United States, and a few members of his delegation
from Nigeria to the meeting.

Labour Leaders Have Sold- Out -- Imo Workers Lament

The cloud of total show down is gradually gathering in the Imo State work force as the Imo Civil Servants are now singing discordant tunes from that of the leadership of the Imo State joint Public Service Negotiating Council.

The crux of the matter is the recent policy of the Owelle-led administration to slash the take home package of its workers, a decision which did not go down well with the workers even though government propaganda machinery had earlier denied that the state government has no intention of doing such.

Not too long ago the Imo State House of Assembly workers rejected their slashed month of May salaries. The slashing was by 50%. The Nigeria union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) also resented to the policy.

The workers did not fold hands to watch events unfold as they decided to carry out wide and in-depth investigation as to the cause of their woes. They traced the entire affair to betrayal by their apex labour leaders.
Some workers who spoke to Trumpeta on condition of anonymity said the Mrs Ogini-led Joint Public Service Negotiating Council has sold out. “If they have not been settled why haven’t they come out with a clear cut statement?”, an aggrieved worker queried.

Another intoned that Mrs Ogini who came from the National Association for Nigeria Nurses and midwives to occupy the leadership position is being remote controlled by the state government through the instrumentality of the outgone chairman of the Joint Negotiating Council, Nze Aharanwa. The aggrieved worker said Mrs Ogini was always seen visiting Nze Aharanwa who is currently the principal secretary to the Deputy Governor for consultations.

A frontline labour unionist who is not of the apex body told Trumpeta that such silence would not have been maintained if Comrade Coleman Okwara was incharge. But he was victimized and sent on transfer far north. He would have spoken out.
The unionist revealed, “We have laid our labour mine for the JNC leadership and it will blow up in no distant time because they have betrayed us, our labour mine is strike”.

Patience Jonathan Humiliated At PH Airport "On Orders From Abuja"

Barely two months after the exit of her husband from office, former First Lady and wife of immediate past president, Dame Patience Jonathan has allegedly suffered ignominy and molestation at the hands of security operatives and aviation officials at the Port Harcourt International airport.

Dame Jonathan, who was on her way to the burial of her late Chief Security Officer (CSO), Tamuno Jacob Igbomie, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, was on Wednesday prevented from entering the VIP Lounge of the airport, a privilege she had enjoyed in the last 16 years.
The former First Lady arrived Port Harcourt International Airport and made for the VIP lounge as had been the norm and should still be accorded her given her status in the society. However, she was practically locked out and prevented from accessing the lounge.
An eye witness, who narrated the incident, said that efforts by the former president’s wife and her personal aides to pacify the security agents at the airport to allow the long known protocol etiquette stand were rebuffed as they stood their ground, insisting that they were acting on orders from Abuja,
New Telegraph further learnt that on her return from the burial, the same drama played out, prompting observers to ask if the presidency could give such a directive against the personality and family of the immediate past president.
The deceased former CSO to Patience Jonathan was allegedly shot dead by unknown assailants about three weeks ago.
Igbomie’s corpse was found in his Honda Accord car along Airport Road, Abuja with all his phones, wallet and other personal effects in the car untouched.

B’Haram Burns Down New Chief Of Army Staff’s Home

>Photo: Chief of Army Staff, Maj. Gen. Tukur Buratai

Suspected Boko Haram terrorists have burnt down houses, including the
family home of the Chief of Army Staff, Maj. Gen. Tukur Buratai, in
his village in Borno State.

At least, two people were killed and eight injured during the attack
on Buratai village on Tuesday, sources told our correspondent in
Abuja.

It was learnt that the terrorists killed two auto mechanics and
torched some houses during the attack on the community.

"What really happened was that Boko Haram went there. They killed two
motorcycle mechanics and torched some houses. It is not a massive
attack. It was an isolated opportunistic attack, but the Army is on
top of the situation. Troops are on the ground now," a source stated.

Meanwhile, additional roads have been cleared of landmines by troops
for use by commuters in compliance with the directive by the CAS to
troops in the 3 and 7 Divisions of the Nigerian Army.

The acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman, said in a
statement that the road linking Biu-Sabon Gari to Damboa in Borno
State has been cleared of landmines.

"The public are encouraged to use the road as adequate security
measures have been put in place for their safety," Usman said.

America Refuses To Sell Weapons To Buhari – Reports

After a four-day official visit to the United States of America,
President Muhammadu Buhari will be returning to Nigeria today with no
pledge of concrete military assistance against Boko Haram terrorists
from his hosts.

The US government told the Nigerian leader that its arms are tied by
an American law, the Leahy Act, which prevents it from selling arms to
countries with human rights abuse records.

President Buhari, who is returning home displeased, told the US
government that the refusal by America to arm Nigerian troops because
of "so-called human rights violations" and "unproven allegations,"
would only help Boko Haram.

A global human rights watch group, Amnesty International, had recently
accused the Nigerian military under former President Goodluck Jonathan
of gross human rights abuses in the prosecution of the war on
terrorists.

The Nigerian military forces had denied the allegation which President
Buhari pledged to investigate.

Buhari "departs with little practical military assistance in his
battle against the Islamist militants who have turned the northeast of
his country into a bloody war zone," the Associated Press (AP)
reported on Wednesday.

The US government has vowed to help Nigeria defeat the insurgency but
it is prohibited under law from sending weapons to countries that fail
to tackle human rights abuses.

"Regretably, the blanket application of the Leahy Law by the United
States on the grounds of unproven allegations of human rights
violations levelled against our forces has denied us access to
appropriate strategic weapons to prosecute the war," Buhari said.

Addressing an audience of policy-makers, activists and academics in
Washington, Buhari complained that Nigerian forces had been left
"largely impotent" in the face of Boko Haram's campaign of kidnapping
and bombings.

"They do not possess the appropriate weapons and technology which we
could have had if the so-called human rights violations had not been
an obstacle," he said.

"Unwittingly, and I dare say unintentionally, the application of the
Leahy Law Amendment by the United States government has aided and
abetted the Boko Haram terrorists."

He appealed to both the White House and the US Congress to find a way
around the law — introduced by Senator Patrick Leahy in 1997 — and to
supply Nigerian troops with high-tech weapons under a deal "with
minimal strings."

Since 2009, Boko Haram has been trying to establish an Islamist
breakaway state in a conflict that has seen 15,000 people killed and
1.5 million displaced.

The group's brutality and in particular the mass kidnapping and
enslavement of schoolgirls has shocked world opinion.

In June, rights watchdog Amnesty International said there was
sufficient evidence to launch an investigation into senior Nigerian
officers for war crimes.

In a 133-page report, the group blamed the army for the extrajudicial
execution of 1,200 people and the torture or arbitrary detention of
thousands more.

Buhari insists that the charges are not proven, but he has replaced
his senior military commanders and has promised to investigate the
allegations.

CNN Lauds President Jonathan’s Prudent Management Of Economy

The ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said the Nigeria's
ranking as the third fastest-growing economy for 2015 after China and
Qatar by the CNNMoney, a business analysis programme, is a referendum
on the prudent management of the Nigerian economy by the President
Goodluck Jonathan-led administration, describing it as a verdict of a
disinterested party.

A statement by the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Olisa
Metuh on Saturday, said the assessment, coming from the world leading
media institution is a confirmation of an earlier evaluation by other
international institutions that proclaimed a thriving performance and
a bright future for our economy and added that it was another sign
that Nigeria is safe and well-led under the PDP.

"The grading by the CNNMoney is another witness to the reality of
positive changes, brought to all sectors of the national life and
whose cumulative impact formed a consistent growth driver for the
economy. Here again is the reality of the global confidence in the
vivacity of Nigeria as Africa's largest economy.

"For those in opposition, who for expediency of politics found it
convenient to deny what is as clear as daylight and even denounce what
ought to be applauded, the CNN verdict is a reminder once more that
constructive criticism is the mettle of credible opposition.
"The tremendous progress that Nigeria made in the socio-political and
economic sphere under our great party has continued to receive
commendation and popular acclaim locally and internationally. The
message to all Nigerians therefore is to keep hope alive; that things
can only get better", the PDP said.

According to Metuh, this success did not come by accident but through
deliberate application of policies as articulated in the PDP
manifesto, which he noted also resulted in the creation of
investment-friendly environment that has enabled enterprises to thrive
in the country.
"Private businesses such as the MTNs, the Dangotes, the Intel
Services, the Oandos, the Innosons and a host of others in aviation,
oil and gas, retailing, hospitality, banking and other sub-sectors of
the economy have excelled.

"This is in addition to the phenomenal influx of internationally
reputable firms such as CCECC, Kia, Nissan, Shoprite and a host of
others in railways, oil and gas, automobile, communication, the stock
market, construction among others which have helped to boost our
economy", the statement said.
The statement concluded that safeguarding this positive turn against
reversal belongs exclusively to the province of the people of Nigeria,
adding that President Jonathan has demonstrated that he has all it
takes to move the nation to where she rightly belongs.

Confusion As NBC And ‘Radio Biafra’ Operators Engage In Hide And Seek Game

THERE is confusion in Enugu State following the claim by the National
Broadcasting Commission [NBC] that it had successfully blocked the
illegal Radio Biafra from operating and consequent seizure of its
transmission equipment in some parts of South-East zone as well as
some arrests made.
Although police authorities in Enugu State claimed ignorance of any
arrest, it was reliably gathered that an engineer working for the
station based in Enugu had been picked up by men of the Department of
State Security DSS and taken to Abuja.
Residents in the State are however confused because some of the ardent
listeners to the station claimed that the station was still operating
in skeletal form.
State police command's spokesman Mr. Ebere Amaraizu told our reporter
last night "I am not aware of the arrest and parading of the Radio
Biafra suspects. Not to my knowledge", he stated.
NBC's Director General, Emeka Mba had said in Abuja last week that "we
are working with security operatives, the Commission has also tracked
down, neutralized and confiscated transmitter equipment from several
locations in the region.

JAMB: Unilag Rejects 59,000 Candidates

University of Lagos has rejected about 59,000 candidates who applied
for their tertiary education in the school through the Joint Admission
and Matriculation Board (JAMB). This was in irrespective of the fact
that majority of the students scored above the Board's cut-off mark.
Speaking in an interview with Vanguard, JAMB spokesman, Mr Fabian
Benjamin stated that the Board has entered into an agreement with the
school to post the rejected students to other schools in Lagos
environs.
Though, students claimed they are not aware of where jamb is posting
them to but JAMB says candidates should check its website onFriday,
August 5, 2015 for the schools they are posted to. According to hi,
"Admission is not the way people think. We have Merit, Catchment and
closeness to a state. Those are the criteria we are following to
arrive at that list we sent to UNILAG. It's not about the cut off
point, there other considerations."
"UNILAG has only 9000 capacity this years and that is why we are
trying to push the others to other universities." And they will not
understand we are trying to send them to schools that will admit them
because UNILAGg can only take 9000 but the students are not being
patient with us to get this information across to them."
"We sympathise with them but wish to state categorically that the
national cut off point is just the minimum expectation that each
candidate desirous of university admission should have. "However,
universities are at liberty to go higher than 180, depending on their
peculiarities and the performance of candidates who chose them"
"For instance, if over 10,000 candidates who made Unilag their first
choice scored 250 and above, it will be difficult for them to go lower
than 250 when they are to admit only about 9'000. "I wish to state
that a time will come when some universities will go up to 300 as
their cut off mark, depending on the performance," the statement said.
It explained that because of the development, the board decided that
some of the candidates who chose such institutions but fall below
their cut off marks should not miss out, hence the need to send them
to other schools.

I Won't Return To Emeka Ike — Actor’s Wife

Emeka Ike's wife, Emma told The Nation that she's not ready to return
to her husband. Emma said this after court hearing on July 22, 2015.

Emeka was not present in court on July 22, his lawyerAbdul'Hakeem
Labi-Lawaltold the court that his client won't be able to show up in
court due to his health.

Abdul'Hakeem said"My client is ill but I will try my best possible he
comes on the next adjourned date. We indulge the court to give us six
months from this day to see if there is possibility of settlement
between the couple,"

Emma said six months is too long."The last time I wanted to speak with
our children, it was my mother-in-law who picked the call and asked if
I had read Exodus 21 which says that if I go, I shouldn't return."she
said.

The court's president, Chief Awos Awosola said "I am expecting Emeka
Ike in this court if he really wants settlement."

Mrs Ike told the newspaper that "Over two years since I left the
house, he never taught of reconciliation. He had every opportunity to
ask me to return but he didn't. So why now?"

She said Emeka refused to return their kids after he promised to bring
them back to her when she traveled for her mother's burial in
February.

According to Emma,"He promised to bring them to me immediately I

occasions but now, he doesn't allow me anymore. My children are now
against me,"

"If I was still with him, I may not survive. I was 19-year old when I
met him and he was the one who deflowered me. I see no reason I
shouldn't be treated with utmost respect. Due to physical torture, my
health has been affected. There was even a time I thought I had breast
cancer because I felt a lump on one part of my breast."

In tears, Mrs Emma said"I almost went mad when my first son told me on
phone that if I truly loved them, I wouldn't have abandoned them. Even
my seven-year-old son whose day wouldn't be complete without seeing me
said he doesn't love me. I love my children. I miss my children. I
never abandoned them. I am in pain. They don't have any other mother.
I really need my children. I am a good woman; I endured so many things
as his wife"

Gov. Obiano Holds Mass Burial For Unclaimed Bodies Of Onitsha Fuel Tanker Victims

For the residents of Obosi, a suburb of the commercial city of
Onitsha, the mood was solemn as the Anambra State Government organised
a mass burial for 32 unidentified and unclaimed bodies of victims of
the tragic fuel tanker explosion that took place at Upper Iweka last
May.

The Ceremony which commenced with a 21 gun-salute in honor of the
casualties, proceeded with an inter-denominational service held at the
instance of the Anglican Bishop on the Niger, the Right Reverend Owen
Nwokolo.

After spells of touching Bible passages and a deep and solemn
exhortations that highlighted the fickleness of life and the need for
the living to reflect and ensure that they are in good standing with
their creator at all times, the victims were committed to the earth in
the Obosi Cemetry.

Speaking at the solemn ceremony, Governor Willie Obiano explained that
tissue specimen were taken from the unidentified bodies which were
burnt beyond recognition in the explosion and deposited at the Onitsha
General Hospital where it would be kept for a period of ten years for
future investigations while a cenotaph would be built on top of the
grave in the memory of the victims.

Describing the accident as a big tragedy, Governor Obiano recalled
that in swift response to the incident, his administration had taken
pragmatic measures to forestall a future occurrence some of which
included a ban on fuel-carrying tankers and trucks from plying state
roads as well as a restriction of Commercial motorcyclists from plying
the major highways in the State.

Noting that his government was working in collaboration with relevant

JAMB Explains Admission Procedure To Protesting Candidates

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has said that the
national cut off point for screening of candidates for admission
remained the minimum expectation that each candidate desirous of
university admission should have. This is contained in a statement
issued by the Public Relations Officer of the board, Dr Fabian
Benjamin, made available to newsmen on Wednesday in Lagos.

According to the statement, the attention of the board has been drawn
to the challenge experienced by some candidates who could not access
the University of Lagos site to register for the Post-Unified Tertiary
Matriculation Examination (UTME). The statement said that the board
sincerely sympathised with their frustration.

"We want to seize this opportunity to state that our attention has
been drawn to the agitation by some parents and students who turned
out for the registration for the post JAMB screening exercise for the
candidates. "We sympathise with them but wish to state categorically
that the national cut off point is just the minimum expectation that
each candidate desirous of university admission should have.

"However, universities are at liberty to go higher than 180, depending
on their peculiarities and the performance of candidates who chose
them.

"For instance, if over 10,000 candidates who made Unilag their first
choice scored 250 and above, it will be difficult for them to go lower
than 250 when they are to admit only about 7000.

"I wish to state that a time will come when some universities will go
up to 300 as their cut off mark, depending on the performance,'' the
statement said.

It explained that because of the development, the board decided that
some of the candidates who chose such institutions but fall below
their cut off marks should not miss out, hence the need to send them
to other schools.

The statement added that such a gesture should rather be applauded,
instead of condemning the Dibu Ojerinde-led JAMB management.

Imo Tribunal: Court Dismisses Petition Against Okorocha’s Victory

The Imo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal has dismissed
the petition filed by the governorship candidate of the Peoples
Democratic Party, Honourable Emeka Ihedioha, challenging the victory
of Governor Rochas Okorocha in the last Governorship election.

Delivering the judgment at the tribunal sitting in Owerri, the capital
of the state, the Chairman of the Tribunal, Justice David Wyom,
dismissed the petition on the grounds that the petitioner abandoned
their petition, having failed to pay for the pre-hearing notice within
seven days, as stipulated in paragraph 18 (1) of the rule guiding
election petition proceedings.

Justice Wyom further stated that the petitioner applied on June 23,
but failed to make payment for the pre-hearing notice until July 3,
which was outside the seven days provided by law and on the strength
of the Supreme Court authority on this issue.

"The validity of the process starts from when the pre-hearing notice
payment was made and not when it was applied which in turn means the
petitioner paid out of time but applied within time," Justice Wyom
stated.

Earlier in court, counsel to Governor Rochas Okorocha and the All
Progressives Congress, Adeniyi Akintola, moved a motion for the
tribunal to dismiss the petition of the petitioner on the grounds that
they had abandoned their petition, having paid out of the stipulated
time.

While addressing reporters after the judgement, Adeniyi Akintola said
he saw the loophole in their petition and hinged on it.

He stressed that the judgement made would enrich the judicial
jurisprudence in Nigeria.

On his path, the counsel to Honourable Emeka Ihedioha, Mike Ahamba,
stated that, as a senior lawyer, he was embarrassed by the ruling.

"The work abandonment has lost its meaning if a petition that has gone
through pre-hearing session in which all parties participated can now
be described as abandon in other words, the tribunal has overruled the
Supreme Court order on this issue," he said.

He further stated that his client had concluded plans to appeal the
judgement at the Court of Appeal.

First Class Graduates To Serve In Universities – NYSC DG

The Director-General, National Youth Service Corps, Brig-Gen. Johnson
Olawumi, on Wednesday said graduates with first class degrees would,
henceforth, be deployed to teach in universities and other tertiary
institutions.

Olawumi said this in Kaduna at a two-day pre-mobilisation workshop for
the 2015 Batch 'B' NYSC programme.

He said the new posting policy was to properly mobilise the right
manpower to boost the education sector.

"All corps members who graduated with First Class honours, Distinction
Degrees and Diplomas will be posted to tertiary institutions for
effective utilisation of their manpower.

"The posting policy of the scheme is being vigorously implemented for
the achievement of the desired impact.

"I, therefore, appeal to the authorities of all tertiary institutions
of learning to reciprocate this gesture by accepting and offering them
permanent appointments after service."

The NYSC DG disclosed that an online certificate verification
procedure would be introduced to make participation in the scheme more
transparent.

He said that the verification procedure was to promote smooth
interface between the scheme and the public.

"This is focused at further simplifying the procedures for certificate
verification and enquiries as to whether some individuals participated
in national service by making the process more transparent and less
cumbersome."

Olawumi, speaking on the workshop, said it was to holistically review
the scheme, identify and eliminate areas of difficulties that might
crop-up during call-up formalities.

"Pursuing its firm resolve to ensure that the mobilisation process is
transparent and 21st century compliant, the management of the scheme
introduced the online registration platform to ease the entire
exercise.

"The initiative is now widely accepted and applauded by all
stakeholders today because the initiative has eliminated cases of
registration by proxy and also granted easy access to call-up letters
by prospective corps members.

"Arrangements have also been concluded for the setting-up of a help
desk, where prospective corps members can get quick response to the
challenges they may face while registering online."

The NYSC boss assured all that necessary changes to the format for
online registration would be made in compliance with the NYSC Act.

Olawumi also said that 410,821 corps members had so far been trained
in different skills under the NYSC skill acquisition and
entrepreneurship development initiative.

He said ICT facilities would be provided to enable corps members have
a seamless mobilisation process.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the workshop was to allow
stakeholders review policies and challenges of the scheme.

The theme of the workshop is 'ICT and NYSC mobilisation process;
towards eliminating identified challenges.'

Governor Nasiru El-Rufa'I of Kaduna State, while declaring the
workshop open, assured all that the Kaduna State Government would
discharge its obligation to the scheme.

The governor, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of
Youths and Sports, Alhaji Ibrahim Balarabe-Musa, said, "no stone will
be left unturned to ensure the safety and security of corps members in
all parts of the state."

Students Protest JAMB’s Cut Off Marks At UNILAG

A peaceful protest on Wednesday marred the commencement of the
University of Lagos (UNILAG) registration for the 2015/2016 session
screening of candidates for the JAMB's Unified Tertiary Matriculation
Examination.
However, the Registrar of UNILAG, Dr Taiwo Ipaye, said that only 9,000
out of the 32,000 candidates that applied for admission into the
university were eligible for screening.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that some of the parents of
the candidates, who brought their children to the campus for the
exercise, expressed their disappointments over their children's
exclusion from the JAMB's list of shortlisted candidates.
Dr Ben Emone, a medical practitioner and parent, told the News Agency
of Nigeria (NAN) that his son made UNILAG his first choice, and scored
260 marks in the UTME.
According to him, it has been the tradition of the university to peg
its cut-off mark, at least, at 200 for the post UTME.
Emone expressed dissatisfaction at whatever reasons both the
university and JAMB were posting for the sudden change in procedure.
"I will not take this whole thing they are trying to explain because
my son passed the UTME convincingly.
"If there was to be any change, we should have been sensitised well
ahead of time, and not just waking-up one morning to change the rule
of the game.
"All I am saying is that my son must write this Post UTME or nobody
will,'' he said.
Mr Sodunke Oludotun, the National President, Association of Tutorial
School Operators, blamed the crisis on the Registrar of JAMB, Prof.
Dibu Ojerinde.
He alleged that Ojerinde was insensitive to the plights of parents.
Oludotun said that the JAMB registrar was wrong to have introduced
such last minute decision after he had announced to the public that
the cut-off mark for admissions into the universities was 180.
He said that the issues would have turned out differently if the
registrar had gone an extra mile, to carry the general public along,
in board's policy making.
"I think Prof. Ojerinde has some questions to answer on this whole
issue. There must be something he is not telling the public.
"Ojerinde must stop running JAMB as if it is his personal business empire.
"How can Ojerinde impose such high and unacceptable cutoff marks for
five notable public universities in Nigeria under the guise of
catchment, to qualify for post UTME, and you expect us not to protest.
"The worst case scenario at least ought to have been the normal 200
marks and above, which universities like UNILAG and others were known
for.
"If there must be anything new, it should be introduced next year
after due consultations with all critical stakeholders, and get the
public adequately sensitised.
"For now, all we want is for all the candidates the cut-off mark of
200 and above to be allowed to sit for the post UTME or we go to
court,'' he said.
Mr Joseph Adefolalu, the immediate past Chairman, Senior Staff
Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), UNILAG Chapter, said
that JAMB's action was meant to destabilise the President Muhammadu
Buhari-led administration.
This should be resisted, Adefolalu said.
However, UNILAG's Registrar, Dr Taiwo Ipaye, said that only 9,000 out
of the 32,000 candidates that applied for admission into the
university were eligible for screening.
Ipaye said that JAMB considered a lot of options at its 2015 Combined
Policy Meeting held on July 4, as a way out for the candidates.
"JAMB had during that meeting adopted a policy whereby candidates of
universities with surplus applicants for the UTME are reassigned to
other universities with lower number of candidates, than their
capacities.
"This will be beneficial to needy universities; as this will ensure
that they will have more candidates to admit.
"This policy has been implemented with immediate effect and
consequently, the eligibility for Post- UTME screening in the
University of Lagos like other universities in country, has been
determined by JAMB.

"In effect, only candidates, whose names were forwarded to the
University of Lagos by JAMB, are eligible for the 2015/2016
post-UTME,'' she said.
Also, JAMB's Public Relations Officer, Mr Fabian Benjamin, said that
what the parents were agitating for was uncalled for.
According to him, universities are at liberty to go higher than 180,
as cut off marks, based on their peculiarities.
He said, however, that whatever cut-off points they were adopting must
be uniformly applied to all candidates.
"I do not see anything wrong with what UNILAG has done.
"This is because a time will come when some universities may have to
peg their cut-off points at 300 marks, based on performance.
"Before we send candidates to the universities, we normally ensure
that we know their carrying capacities; because we do not want a
situation, whereby, they will present more than they can admit.
"There are private universities and other tertiary institutions that
also need candidates, so, we try to distribute evenly,'' he said.
The spokesman said that JAMB, in its magnanimity, had posted students
that scored above 200 and above to private universities, to forestall
them from staying at home for another year.

President Buhari Makes Another Blunder While In US

In continuation of his four day tour of the United States, President
Muhammadu Buhari in a meeting with President Barack Obama made another
blunder while speaking about his party the All Progressives Congress
(APC) referring it as the All Nigeria's People's Congress. The video
is after the cut.

It would be recalled that after the shift of the the general elections
from February to March, the APC's candidate Buhari granted an
interview to Aljazeera on February 8.

During the interview, Buhari was talking about elections and Nigeria's
main challenges such as corruption, Boko Haram and economic crisis.

Buhari made a blunder when he named the INEC as the Independent
Nigerian Electoral Commission. He also referred to his party as the
"All Progressives Confidence".

We Will Continue With Jonathan’s Privatisation Programme – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has assured international investors of the
readiness of his administration to continue with major privatisation
programme started by previous governments but with "improved moral
architecture."

The President gave the assurance on Tuesday at a business forum
organised by the United States Chamber of Commerce and The Corporate
Council on Africa, in continuation of his four-day official visit to
the US.

He called on US investors to take advantage of the nation's liberal
trade and investment climate by investing in the various profitable
businesses available in Nigeria.

According to him, his government's intention was to continue to create
enabling environment for future investments to thrive in the country.

He said: "It is my intention to create the necessary environment for
future investment in Nigeria.

"We are the most populous nation with largest market in Africa with
vast human and natural resources and blessed with abundant young
skilled workforce.

"We are therefore a proud candidate to become the destination of
choice for United States investments in Africa. I will work
assiduously to welcome new investors to our country.

"I will like to remind you all that we are continuing in major
privatisation programmes with sectors ranging from telecommunication,
energy, gas, solid minerals, aviation, health and infrastructural
development, but with improved moral architecture. We will also
simplify visa procedures based on principle of reciprocity.

"May I, therefore, seize this opportunity to formally invite the
American business community to take advantage of our liberal trade and
investment climate to do profitable business in Nigeria"

The President further urged the American business community to take
advantage of the excellent political relationship between the two
nations to expand trade and investment activities, including joint
venture projects in priority sectors of the Nigerian economy, adding
that the private sector must assume increasing role as part of the
engine of growth.

According to Buhari, his government would specifically welcome genuine
investors who were willing to embark on solid mineral exploration in
Nigeria.

He also pledged that his administration would fulfill its key campaign
promises which included creation of employment opportunities for
millions of Nigerian youths.

He added: "Employment generation was one of my key campaign promises.
I will do my best to keep this promise.

"There is no other way to expand economic opportunities and create
employment opportunities for millions of our youths than boosting
domestic manufacturing, undertaking infrastructural development and
industrialisation.

"Let me repeat, Nigeria will partner with genuine investors who are
willing to join us to achieve our economic objective and at the same
time realise handsome returns to recoup their investments.

"There is more to Nigeria than oil. This is why I will continue to
stress the need for increased United States investments in our non-oil
sector.

"In this respect, the present adminnistration will be attentive to the
needs of the business community and pursue policies that will
strengthen the sectors that drive the growth.''

Police Round Up 12 Teenage Suspects Over Lesbianism

Hell was let loose, last week, in Oto-Owori area, Ijanikin, Lagos
State, after a 16-year-old member of the famous Abogun family, made
startling confessions about how she was initiated into cultism and
lesbianism by the younger sister of her uncle's wife. Parents of the
victim who were shocked by the confession reportedly alerted the
police after she was caught while attempting to sneak out of the house
with some items demanded by her cult members.
Revelations
According to the victim (names withheld), who completed her secondary
education in June, "it was Tope who introduced me into lesbianism and
cultism early last year. On Friday, at about 7-8pm, I received a call
from Tope that I should bring my red jacket, which is the cult uniform
and a jack-knife for her. While I was attempting to sneak out of the
house to meet her, I was accosted by my brothers who checked the bag I
was carrying and found the cult jacket and the jack-knife. They called
on my parents who demanded to know how I got those items.

File: arrested suspects
Becoming lesbian partner
"Initially, she forced me into becoming her lesbian partner. She
threatened me that if I failed to do it, my life was at stake. When I
became her lover, we took a blood oath as Tope used a blade to cut my
hand and licked the blood. She also cut her hand and asked me to lick
the blood. She threatened that she must not see me with anyone,
whether male or female but she was free to go out with others as she
has other lovers. I have been her lover for over a year now and I
became her lover before I completed my secondary education.
"After Tope introduced me to lesbianism, she forced me into their
cult. The night I was initiated into Aiye cult, I was blindfolded.
Members of the cult gave me a gun to take an oath, declaring that I
would not reveal anything about the cult to anyone. They said if I
ever revealed anything about the cult to anyone, the same gun that I
used to take the oath would be used to take my life. Thereafter, about
twenty of the males present at the initiation slept with me one after
the other.
Strange gun appears
"Two months ago, I stole my father's N50, 000 and gave to her. There
was a time she gave me a gun to keep for her. I kept the gun in my
book-shelf two days. She gave the gun to me because she said she
couldn't take it home. Later, she collected it and gave it to a member
of the cult. I really don't know what they use the weapon for. The red
jacket which is the cult uniform was given to me by Segun. He is the
leader of the Aiye cult. Since I became a member, I haven't been able
to go anywhere with them because of how difficult it is for me to
leave home as my parents don't allow me out after 6pm, and most of
their activities are usually in the night. There was a time they asked
me to trail my elder brother because they said he is arrogant."
Shooting at birthday party
In her defence, 18-year-old Tope (surname withheld) who initially
confessed that she gave the gun to Kemi to keep because she could not
take it home, later denied the allegation that she is a cultist.
According to her, "I have known Kemi from my childhood. I am a
salesgirl. I was arrested because the victim said I introduced her
into cultism and lesbianism but I am not a cultist, and she didn't
give me money.
"I have not seen Kemi for more than a month now, since my birthday
which I celebrated on June 21. Although they fired a gun at my
birthday party, I don't know who fired the gunshot but Samuel was with
a gun that night, and I know that Samuel is a cultist and he attended
my birthday party. It was a cult guy called Daddy that threatened that
if I refuse to join their cult, he will deal with me and shoot me in
the legs with a gun."
Recruiting young girls as armourers
Crime Alert gathered that young girls were recruited into the cult
group as they are used as armourers who keep the ammunitions for them
any time they go for operation. It was learned that based on the
revelations
, the Divisional Police Officer in-charge of Ijanikin Division of
Lagos State, SP Robinson Eregare, swung into action and succeeded in
clamping down on all the suspected cultists connected with the
victim's initiation. Among those arrested were Musa Kareem, Austine
Ebosoje and ten others.
Police reacts
Confirming the incident, Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer,
DSP Kenneth Nwosu said Temitope Famati, an 18-year-old lesbian,
Ogunsan Kemi , another 20-year-old lesbian, Oseni Lukman, 30; Chidi
Okafor, 25; Musa Kareem, 26; Austine Ebozoje, a 19- year-old pirate,
Segun Sowumi, Olatokunbo Babatunde, 18; Gbelebu Samuel, 17 and Hussan
Azeez, 30, were among the cultists arrested so far.

The police said the martenity home was allegedly being used as a baby
factory at Umukpeyi village in the Isiala Ngwa South Local Government
Area of the state.

The age of the victims, according to the state Police Public Relations

when it was discovered that they had unwanted pregnancies."

Onyeke said while 12 out of the 14 suspects were confirmed pregnant,
two said they came to check if they were pregnant.

The police said the owner of the illegal maternity home escaped arrest
as she was not at home during the raid, but added that efforts were on
to track her down.

The PPRO appealed to members of the public with any useful information
on her whereabouts to volunteer same to the police for prompt action.

It will be recalled that the said suspect was earlier this year
paraded by the police at the Officers Mess, Umuahia.

Buhari Treating PDP As ‘Prisoners Of War’ -- Metuh

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has accused the All Progressives Congress, APC-led Federal Government of treating its members as prisoners of war.
Spokesman of the party, Olisa Metuh, on Tuesday, while addressing party stakeholders in Lokoja, shortly before the commencement of the re-scheduled Ward Congress of the party in the state, said the party is also working hard to win the Kogi and Bayelsa governorship polls scheduled for November and December respectively.

According to him, “We are being treated as if we are prisoners of war. We are being treated as if we are refugees. We are not afraid, we have faith in our strength and unity; faith in the peace, unity and progress of Nigeria.
“We (PDP) are not afraid of the intimidation, harassment and arrest of our members by the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, if the arrest is done within the confines of the law.”
The Publicity Secretary, who said the party’s stands against corruption has remained unwavering, however, lamented the witch-hunt of its members by the Buhari-led administration under the pretext of a probe.
“We condemn the uncivilised method of arrest, intimidation and the denial of the fundamental human rights of members of our party who served in the last administration by the Buhari led administration.
“If the ruling party believes that there is any one who has served in the federal government and is guilty of corrupt practices, they are free within the law to investigate as long as they go through due process and observe the rule of law.”

President Buhari Writes For Washington Post | Read What He Wrote About

The article is titled “Nigeria Committed To Good Governance And Fighting Terror” … Read below

This month, the world moved a step closer to the defeat of Boko Haram, the jihadist group that has terrorized hundreds of thousands in the northern states of Nigeria. In one of my first acts since taking office as president six weeks ago, I have replaced the heads of Nigeria’s army, navy and air force. Our new military leadership has not been chosen because of their familiarity with those in government, as was too often the case in the past, but on their track records and qualifications alone.

These new military leaders will be based in Borno State in northern Nigeria, where the headquarters of the armed services has been relocated. This shift of resources and command directly to the front line, in addition to the replacement of the head of the State Security Service, Nigeria’s intelligence organization, and a new emphasis on working in partnership with our neighbors, has equipped us to take the fight directly to Boko Haram.

Already we are beginning to see a degrading of Boko Haram’s capabilities as a fighting force. In recent weeks, it appears to have shifted away from confronting the military directly to an increase in attacks on civilian areas, as we saw only last week when an elderly woman and 10-year-old girl blew themselves up at a Muslim prayer gathering in northeastern Nigeria. We should not be confused by this change, hateful as it is: It does not mean that Boko Haram is succeeding in its aims — it shows that it is losing.

While we work to defeat the terrorists, I ask the people of Nigeria and the world for resolve and fortitude. The campaign we will wage will not be easy; it may not be swift. We should expect stages of success and also moments when it may appear that our advances have been checked. But no one should have any doubt as to the strength of our collective will or my commitment to rid this nation of terror and bring back peace and normalcy to all affected areas.

Similarly, my determination should not be underestimated in other matters. This includes instilling good governance and tackling the scourge of corruption that has held Nigeria back for too long.

As I meet with President Obama today — the first time a president of the United States will encounter a Nigerian counterpart following the peaceful transfer of power in a contested election in our history — I will be discussing my plans for critical reforms. So, too, will I discuss why the formation of my administration is taking time and, crucially, why it must. Already there are voices saying these changes are taking too long — even though only six weeks have passed since my inauguration. I hear such calls, but this task cannot and should not be rushed.

When cabinet ministers are appointed in September, it will be some months after I took the oath of office. It is worth noting that Obama himself did not have his full Cabinet in place for several months after first taking office; the United States did not cease to function in the interim. In Nigeria’s case, it would neither be prudent nor serve the interests of sound government to have made these appointments immediately on my elevation to the presidency; instead, Nigeria must first put new rules of conduct and good governance in place.

I cannot stress how important it is to ensure that this process is carried out correctly, just as it has been crucial to first install the correct leadership of the military and security services before we fully take the fight to Boko Haram.

There are too few examples in the history of Nigeria since independence where it can be said that good management and governance were instituted at a national level. This lack of a governance framework has allowed many of those in charge, devoid of any real checks and balances, to plunder. The fact that I now seek Obama’s assistance in locating and returning $150 billion in funds stolen in the past decade and held in foreign bank accounts on behalf of former, corrupt officials is testament to how badly Nigeria has been run. This way of conducting our affairs cannot continue.
Indeed, the failure of governance, it can be argued, has been as much a factor in Nigeria’s inability thus far to defeat Boko Haram as have been issues with the military campaign itself.

So the path we must take is simple, even if it is not easy: First, instill rules and good governance; second, install officials who are experienced and capable of managing state agencies and ministries; and third, seek to recover funds stolen under previous regimes so that this money can be invested in Nigeria for the benefit of all of our citizens.

We seek the support and partnership of the United States in these tasks. The importance of the fight against terrorism and corruption in Nigeria, Africa’s most powerful economy and largest populace, cannot be underestimated. Our allies can provide much-needed military training and intelligence as our soldiers take the war effort to Boko Haram. Similarly, we look to U.S. businesses as well as the Obama administration to help develop governance initiatives that can ensure that Nigeria’s wealth benefits all its people, not just a few. By taking these steps, we will be positioned to benefit from increased investment — particularly in energy and electricity — from the United States.

I was elected on a platform of change. I know this is what the people of Nigeria desire more than anything else. I know they are impatient for action. I realize the world waits to see evidence that my administration will be different from all those that came before. Yet reforming my country after so many years of abuse cannot be achieved overnight. In our campaigns against both Boko Haram and corruption, we should remain steadfast and remember, as it is said: “Have patience. All things become difficult before they become easy.”
