Bashi Ali Title Fight: 200 Companies Turn Down Sponsorship Proposals

No fewer than 200 companies have turned down proposals for the
sponsorship of Bash Ali's "Guinness Book of World Record'' title
fight.

Bash Ali guns for Guinness Book of World Records Title Fight Project
Bala Ka'oje, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the
fight, disclosed in an interview in Abuja on Thursday.

He said that the development was a major setback for the staging of the fight.

"From what I can see, the hope of this fight taking place is very slim
because we have written and followed up letters in a number of places.

"More than 200 letters have been sent to both government and private
organisations, but we have not gotten any serious response. I don't
know why people are not convinced.

"I know that Bash can fight this fight and perhaps win it; it will
also be a history making for him and the country. But others might not
see it that way.

"We are still praying that God will touch the minds of Nigerians both
in government and private sector to come and support the project.

"This will enable the LOC meet with the objective for which it was
set-up,'' Ka'oje said.

Ka'oje, who was former Minister of Sports, also told NAN that Bank of
Industry (BoI) gave a false hope to the project.

"I don't know the arrangement Bash has with Bank of Industry (BoI).

"All I know is that we wrote them a letter but we never got a reply
from the bank, from my investigation I found out that they actually do
not have money to fund sports.

"They are supposed to fund Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs)
according to the act that established them; there is no provision in
their act to fund sports.

"However, the LOC is crawling,'' Ka'oje added.

He noted that the condition given by the International Boxing Union
(IBU), which mandated the LOC to pay $29 million before the fight
could be stage, was discouraging.

According to Ka'oje, the complaint to the IBU on its tough charges
necessitated the change of date for fight on several occasions.

He pointed out that no boxer even in America would remain in business
after meeting such conditions of the IBU.

The 58-year-old Bash Ali was scheduled to fight 32-year-old IBU
champion, Rick Camling of America.

Ladipo Marketers Reopen N4bn Suit Against Police

The youths of the popular Ladipo International Market, Lagos State,
under the auspices of Ekwulobia Imeobi Youths Association on Wednesday
reopened a case against the Nigeria Police over the alleged
extra-judicial killing of four of its members in 2001.

The youth group had in 2001 taken the Nigeria Police before a Lagos
State High Court in Igbosere demanding N4bn as cost of damages for
allegedly killing four of its members extra-judicially.

It was alleged that officers of the Aguda Police Station in Surulere
did the killing.

The slain were named as Anthony Ezenwafor, Chukwuemika Ezeofor,
Izuchukwu Ezeama and Alloysius Osigwe.

The deceased were said to be traders and apprentices under one Mr.
Jude Okoli, a businessman at the market.

According to the youths, policemen attacked and killed the four men on
July 21, 2001 in their apartment at No. 48, Olaitan Street, Surulere,
Lagos.

At the resumed hearing on Wednesday, counsel for the youths, Mr.
Abiola Akerele, informed Justice Oyindamola Ogala that though the
Aguda Police Station had been served with the prosecution's processes
since 2001, they had yet to reply.

The defence counsel, Mr. Jonathan Ogunsanya, however begged for more
time to regularise the position of the defence.

Justice Ogala subsequently adjourned till October 23, 2014 for further hearing.

The Ekwulobia Imeobi Youths Association are seeking in their suit a
declaration of the court that the killing of its members by police
officers was unconstitutional, extra-judicial, illegal and an
infringement on their right to life, liberty and dignity.

They prayed the court to award a sum of N4bn as damages and
compensations to the families of the four victims for the unjust and
illegal termination of their lives.

They also want a court order directing the police authorities or any
other persons or body of persons to conduct full and unbiased
investigation into the incident with a view that punitive measures be
taken against all those found to have had hands in the dastardly act.

In a 21-paragraph affidavit with which the group supported its case,
one of them named Akaraka Ezeonara said, "The information I got was
that robbers went to the house of the deceased on July 21, 2001 and
began shouting 'Alloy Alloy', which was the name of one of the
deceased.

"The deceased realising that the people shouting were robbers, removed
their window glass and escaped out of the building through the window.

"After the robbers had gone, the deceased went back to their house and
not long after, the police arrived and immediately shot three of them
- Ezenwafor, Ezeofor and Ezeama, without any effort at arresting them
or telling them what offences they were alleged to have committed.

"The police later said they shot the deceased on mere suspicion
without the foundation that they were armed robbers."

Enugu To Provide Ebola Test Kits In Public Schools

>Directs teachers to ignore NUT strike action.

The Enugu State Government on Thursday promised to provide Ebola Virus
Disease test kits in public schools ahead of the Sept. 22 resumption.

The state Commissioner for Education, Prof. Uchechukwu Okoro,
announced this in Enugu during a capacity building workshop on EVD for
teachers in the state.

He said government would also provide hand washing facilities and
thermometres in public schools in the state.

The commissioner said the teachers needed to be equipped with the
technical knowledge in order to be in a position to handle emergency
cases.

Okoro directed the teachers to ignore the strike action as directed by
the Nigeria Union of Teachers, warning that any teacher that failed to
resume classes would risk his or her job.

"There is no strike in Enugu State and teachers that refuse to report
to classes will be on their own because they will not be with us,"
Okoro said.

The UNICEF Education Specialist in Enugu, Dr Agatha Nzeribe, in a
presentation said children had the right to education even during
emergencies.

She said, "Education during emergencies is a fundamental right of
children and when properly implanted, they will recover.

"The children should have opportunities to develop optimally, but when
we leave them they will miss out at a critical period of their lives."

Nzeribe said special attention needed to be given to children with
disabilities in emergency situations.

She called for the establishment of essential communal services around
public schools to enable students benefit from such services.

Nzeribe said UNICEF would continue to partner with the state
government to ensure that school children were adequately catered for.

Some of the participants at the workshop, including Mr Pius Agu and
Mrs Rose Ugwu, said the training had given them more insight in
handling the disease.

Catholic Church May Allow Divorcees Receive Holy Communion

The leadership of the Roman Catholic Church is bracing for open
conflict over its treatment of remarried divorcees as powerful
conservatives mobilise ahead of a highly anticipated summit called by
Pope Francis for next month,The Guardianreports.

Ever since he announced the extraordinary session of the synod of
bishops last year, the Argentinian pontiff has raised the hopes of
many liberals that the church may ease its ban on divorced and
remarried Catholics receiving holy communion - a move that could
affect millions of people around the world.

In February, in an address setting the scene for the meeting due to
start on 5 October, German cardinal Walter Kasper outlined the case
for a loosening of the rules that would eventually allow some people
access to the sacraments after a period of "penance".

But his views are by no means shared by all the so-called princes of
the church, some of whom are taking a harder line on the thorny issue
and insisting that such a proposal would, in effect, violate the
doctrine on the permanence of marriage.

It emerged on Wednesday that five leading conservative cardinals have
collaborated on a book to be published simultaneously on 1 October in
the United States, Italy, Spain, France and Germany in which they make
clear their opposition to Kasper's vision.

"It [Kasper's proposal] is being talked about as a form of not
recognising the second marriages of divorced and remarried Catholics,
but simply looking past them, of tolerating them, and allowing those
individuals who are Catholics under certain circumstances... to go to
confession and subsequently to go to communion on a regular basis. We
oppose that solution as a false form of mercy and we're united on
that," editor Robert Dodaro told the Guardian. "It's false mercy in
the sense that it ignores the status of the original marriage, which
we believe to be indissoluble."

Boko Haram Installs Emirs In Gwoza,Dambua.

Boko Haram has installed emirs in Gwoza and Dambua, Borno State, the
two towns that fell to the Islamist sect two weeks ago, Senator Ali
Dume told his colleagues as Senate resumed from its two-month recess
yesterday.This is even as the Upper Chamber urged President Goodluck
Jonathan to declare total war on the insurgents, advising him to
mobilise all resources and efforts to that effect.

Senator Ndume, who represents southern Borno, told lawmakers that Boko
Haram has literally sacked two emirs and installed their own on
Monday.
His words:

"I represent southern Borno and Gwoza. The challenges we are facing
are more serious than what we have faced before. We, the people of
southern Borno, particularly Gwoza, parts of Adamawa and Yobe know
that it's presently occupied!

"I read here on the Senate Order Paper about a threat. It's no longer
a threat; somebody is occupying that place and he's declared it a
caliphate!Yesterday, a new emir was installed by Boko Haram in Dambua.
The original emir is taking refuge in Abuja. Boko Haram installed a
new emir in Gwoza...Recently, we conceded the extension of state of
emergency and it was because it could get out of hand.

Fifa ExCo Members Ordered To Return £16000 Watches Given As Gifts

Members of Fifa's executive committee have been asked to return
watches they were given as gifts by the Brazilian Football
Confederation. .

Watches each worth more than £16,000 were handed out to a
representative from all 32 countries at the World Cup - including
England, according to Fifa's ethics investigators.

A Parmigiani watch was also distributed in a gift bag from the
Brazilian federation (CBF) in June to the 28 FIFA executive committee
members. It is unknown what happened to the gift bag for the English
FA.

Fifa's ethics committee said accepting such valuable gifts contravenes
its rules and has demanded that all the watches be returned by October
24 otherwise it will launch disciplinary proceedings.

A statement from the ethics committee said: "The CBF should not have
offered the watches, and those who received gift bags should have
promptly checked whether the items inside were appropriate and, upon
discovering the watch, either returned it or... reported the matter to
the investigatory chamber.

"The Fifacode of ethics plainly prohibits such gifts. Football
officials may not offer or accept gifts that have more than 'symbolic
or trivial value'.

"If in doubt, gifts shall not be offered or accepted. Football
officials are expected to be aware of the importance of their duties
and concomitant obligations and responsibilities.

"In an effort to resolve this matter expeditiously, the investigatory
chamber will not pursue further formal ethics proceedings in this
matter against officials who submit the Parmigiani watch they received
from CBF to the secretariat of the investigatory chamber by no later
than October 24, 2014."

The watches will then be donated to an independent non-profit
organisation "committed to corporate social responsibility projects in
Brazil", said the statement.

Several officials did report the watches to the ethics committee and
the CBF confirmed it had distributed 65 gift bags, each containing a
Parmigiani watch.

The recipients comprised "the 28 officials on the Fifa executive
committee, a representative from each of the 32 member associations
competing in the 2014 Fifa World Cup Brazil, and a representative from
each of the 10 member associations in Conmebol (the South American
confederation)", said the statement.

The CBF said they had paid 8,750 US dollars for each watch but that
the ethics committee had obtained an independent valuation of 25,000
Swiss francs (£16,400).

FIFA Rankings: Nigeria Drops 4 Spots, Now World 37th

NIGERIA has dropped by four spots in the FIFA World Rankings and are
now 37th as a result of its unimpressive performance in its two Africa
Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

According to the September rankings released on Thursday on FIFA's
website, Nigeria now has 642 points as against 673 points it garnered
in the August ranking.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the African Champions
fell 2-3 to Congo and were held to a goalless draw by South Africa in
the 2015 AFCON qualifiers.

With the, Nigeria are now the sixth-placed country in Africa as
against the third place it occupied in August.

The 2013 AFCON champions are now preceded in Africa by Algeria, Cote
D'Ivoire, Tunisia, Ghana and Senegal which have 926, 879,701, 661 and
645 points respectively.

However, the first five teams in Africa moved up in the global
rankings as Algeria is now world 20th, Cote D'Ivoire 22nd, Tunisia
31st, Ghana 33rd and Senegal 36th.

On the global scene, there was no movement either into or out of the top 10.

2014 FIFA World Cup finalists, Germany and Argentina, have slightly
extended their lead over the chasing pack and remain unchallenged at
the top of the rankings.

They are followed in third position by Colombia, which has swapped
places with the Netherlands.

The Netherlands paid dearly for their 2-1 defeat at the hands of Czech
Republic in their opening qualifying match for UEFA EURO 2016.

On their part, Colombia equalled their highest-ever position, having
previously achieved third in July and August 2013.

Meanwhile in the top ten, Brazil (6th, up 1) and France (9th, up 1)
have gained ground, while Uruguay (7th, down 1), Spain (8th, down 1)
and Switzerland (10th, down 1) have each dropped a place.

However, this month's biggest winners are Guatemala, which three wins
in four matches in the qualifiers for the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2015 have
seen the team leap by 77 places to 57th.

The team's win against World Cup participants Honduras yielded many of
those points.

With Iceland (34th, up 12), Congo (48th, up 30) and Antigua and
Barbuda (80th, up 69), September 2014 saw the three teams reaching
their highest-ever position since the ranking was introduced in 1993.

According to FIFA, of the 141 international "A" matches taken into
account for this month's ranking, over half of them (80) are
continental qualifiers in Europe, Africa and CONCACAF.

``The other 61 fixtures were friendlies and this takes the total
number of international "A" matches played in 2014 so far to 526.

Ebola: FG Approves N200m For Rivers

President Goodluck Jonathan has approved the release of N200m for the
Rivers State government as assistance in the fight against Ebola Virus
Disease.

The Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, confirmed this in a
statement issued on Wednesday night by his Special Assistant (Media
and Communications), Mr. Dan Nwomeh, while giving an update on EVD.

He said, "Mr. President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, has approved the
release of N200m to the Rivers State Government as direct financial
support to the state towards the containment of EVD outbreak.

"For one week now, there has not been a single case of Ebola Virus
Disease in Nigeria. The total number of confirmed EVD cases recorded
in Nigeria remains 19, with 12 survivors and seven deaths.

"The South African woman who was taken from the Murtala Muhammed
International Airport in Lagos and quarantined on suspicion of EVD
tested negative for EVD and other viral haemorrhagic fevers and has
since been discharged from quarantine and has left the country. Also,
a suspected case reported by NLNG tested negative for EVD.

"A number of contacts are still under surveillance in Nigeria, 4 in
Lagos State and 344 in Rivers State. So far, 347 contacts have been
discharged from surveillance in Lagos State while 182 contacts have
been discharged from surveillance in Rivers State."

Also, the Minister of Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu, said on Wednesday that
there had been no new case of the Ebola Virus Disease in the country
in the last one week.

Chukwu, who spoke with state house correspondents after the Federal
Executive Council meeting, said there were currently 363 persons under
surveillance.
