WAEC Set to Introduce Computer-Based Testing for Examinations

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is set to embrace Computer Based Testing (CBT) for its exams, as announced by the Head of National Office, Mr. Patrick Areghan, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria. Areghan, who is preparing to conclude his three-year tenure on October 1st, revealed that CBT implementation has been part of his vision for WAEC.

Areghan explained that while progress has been made in planning CBT exams, challenges remain, especially in handling practical and essay papers. He emphasized the need to address issues like computer literacy, access to computer facilities, and electricity availability in schools. Areghan indicated that the transition to CBT would begin with objective questions and later extend to theory and practical papers, possibly offering a segregated approach for schools that cannot afford CBT.

Beyond CBT, Areghan aspired to fully digitize all aspects of WAEC's operations, including certificate issuance, result checking, and verification. He envisioned WAEC becoming a technology-driven examination body on the international stage. Additionally, he expressed a desire to extend the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) to Nigerian children in the diaspora and promote the use of digital certificates across the sub-region.

Areghan highlighted the introduction of WAEC's Digital Security Printing Press as a significant milestone during his tenure and mentioned internal initiatives such as the Staff Bus scheme. He expressed confidence in his successor's ability to continue these efforts and expressed gratitude for the successful conduct of exams, timely result release, and certificate issuance during his tenure. The implementation of the new minimum standards for senior secondary education in Nigeria has begun from the current academic session, according to the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC). - The minimum requirement for admission into senior secondary school will be a pass in six subjects, including English and mathematics, in the BECE.

Key information about FUTO 2023/2024 admissions:

FUTO has announced that it will not conduct Post UTME Exams for 2023/2024 UTME and Direct Entry Candidates who chose the school as their first choice of institution in the just concluded UTME.

FUTO has invited eligible candidates to apply for the Screening Exercise for admissions, which will be based on verified JAMB scores and WAEC/GCE/NECO uploaded on JAMB Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS).

FUTO has also stated that candidates who did not choose FUTO as their first choice University but scored a minimum of 160 can also apply on the condition that they visit the JAMB website for a change of Institution to FUTO as their First Choice University.

FUTO has set the application deadline for September 30, 2023 and the processing fee is Two Thousand Naira (N2,000.00).

FUTO has advised candidates to upload their O'Level results on JAMB PORTAL, NOT LATER THAN September 30, 2023 and to ensure that their academic transcript reaches The Registrar, Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Imo state, NOT LATER THAN September 30, 2023.
