PDP wins Aba-South by-election

The candidate of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, Mrs. Nkemdirim
Iheasimuo, has won the August 16 by-election for Aba-South state
constituency.

According to the result of the poll announced by the Independent
National Electoral Commission, Mrs. Iheasimuo polled 1,655 votes to
defeat Mr. Smart Ebere of the All Progressives Congress, who got 313
votes, while Chief Chimobi Apara of the All Progressives Grand
Alliance came third with 252 votes.

She is the widow of the former occupant of the seat, the late Mr.
Nwogu Iheasimuo who died in March this year after an illness.

Meanwhile, Governor Theodore Orji has congratulated her on her victory
which he described as "a victory for democracy."

Orji, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Charles Ajunwa,
thanked the people of Aba-South state constituency for making the
right choice by voting overwhelmingly for the widow of the late
occupant of the seat to continue with her late husband's achievements.

Orji, who commended voters for conducting themselves peacefully, said
that the state government would continue to provide an enabling
environment for voters in the state to exercise their constitutional
rights by voting for the candidates of their choice.
