Judiciary Must Rise To Challenge Of Imo PDP Gov Primaries --Onyechere

Activist and political commentator, Ben Onyechere, has asked the
nation's judiciary, as the hope of democracy to rectify the anomaly
committed by the National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic
Party (PDP) in Imo State gubernatorial primaries.

He said unless the judiciary steps in, the future of democracy would
be in danger with the failure of the PDP NWC to correct the
abnormality where the number of votes cast were more than the votes
declared.

In a statement made available toSunday Independent, he argued that
injustice was done to one of the candidates, Ifeanyi Ararume, who he
said was shortchanged, stressing further that the judiciary must wake
up to look deeper into the case.

"The judiciary must rise up in the last Imo guber primaries because
the institution remains the hope of democracy.

"With The failure of the PDP NWC to rectify the abnormality of the
last guber primaries in Imo State where the number of votes cast were
more than the votes declared the people have reverted to the course of
justice to realise their long awaited dream for the truth to be
revealed.

"The feeling of the people is that Ifeanyi Araraume had an upper hand
and won the poll that will make him become the governor of the state.

"The judiciary which is the stabilising factor in any democracy has
another chance of protecting the peoples' franchise with its
unassailable impartiality in an irregular and conspiratorial polity.

"The beauty of every democracy therefore is the independence of the
judiciary whose opinion must be respected as a dispassionate arbiter
which it had demonstrated in the past in a similar case where Araraume
had won the primaries and the party brazenly re awarded it to another
person.

"The nation's polity has outlived the era of impunity where a few
people are compromised and thereby conspire to rub peter to pay Paul.

"Let us not be deceived because the outcome of this matter will go a
long way in defining the culture of Nigerian politics".
