The Peoples Democratic Party candidate for Orlu (Imo West) senatorial
district, Senator Hope Uzodinma, has been declared the winner of the
senatorial election held on Saturday.
He garnered 154,605 votes to beat the All Progressives Congress
candidate, Osita Izunaso, who got 70,843 votes.
The All Progressives Grand Alliance candidate, ThankGod Eziani and
Chief Idika Jafac, came third and fourth with 28,753 and 14,491 votes
respectively.
Declaring the result at the INEC Office in Owerri, the Returning
officer, Prof. Christian Eze, stated that he had to announce the
result in Owerri because of the crisis that surrounded the collation
of the results in the INEC office in the Orlu zone.
The Federal University of Technology, Owerri, lecturer, who showed
journalists the torn and squeezed result sheets, said that they were
able to extract the results from the parts of the squeezed and torn
papers.
Eze added that one of his co-workers was badly beaten by those he
described as "APC boys," who he said saw the election result going
against their candidate.
The senatorial results of the other two zones in the state (Owerri and
Okigwe) have also been declared with the PDP candidates, Chief Samuel
Anyanwu (Owerri) and Chief Athan Achonu (Okigwe) as winners.
Meanwhile, the results of the presidential election from the local
government areas in the state had the PDP winning with the APC only
winning in Ideato South LGA.
