Barcelona Wins Champions League: Arsenal Receive £3m

Barcelona have won the Champions League, and Arsenal are celebrating
with the finest champagne.

That's because last summer's transfer of Thomas Vermaelen included a
clause that meant the Gunners receive an additional £3m if Barcelona
were crowned European champions for the fourth time since 2006.

The Belgium defender moved to Barca for £15m last year, agreeing a
five-year deal with the Spanish giants.

According to Spanish newspaperSport, Arsenal had inserted the clause
in the transfer stipulating that they will receive additional payments
based on Barcelona's success.

The 29-year-old, however, has made just one appearance for Barcelona
that came in the final La Liga game of the season and is yet to make
his Champions League debut. He has been sidelined with a hamstring
tear all season, after picking up the injury with Belgium during the
World Cup.

Vermaelen made a total of 150 appearances for the Gunners between 2009 and 2014.
