When two of the greatest football clubs in the world meet, a mammoth
crowd is often expected to pay attention.
Manchester United and Real Madrid sold out all 109,000 tickets for
their pre-season friendly in Michigan on Saturday.
Expectedly so, the crowd will be the biggest ever gathered to watch a
football match in the US. The record was previously held by a friendly
between Barcelona v LA Galaxy at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena in 2009,
which got 93,137 in attendance.
An excited Wayne Rooney described the support in the US as great and
the ticket sales, incredible.
"It's fantastic. The fanbase over here is great and it's two massive
clubs, two of the biggest clubs in the world, so to sell that many
tickets for a pre-season match is incredible.
A club with rich history, United has played before a bigger crowd,
with 120,000 people present to watch a European Cup semi-final which
held in Bernabeu in April 1957 . This will be the largest attendance
they have played for since then.
One of the players that might have caught the eyes of the fans in the
US, Cristiano Ronaldo is sadly not playing the game.
Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said of his forward: "Ronaldo has
been working individually, separate from the team, and he is
continuing to work.
"We will not put him out tomorrow, as he has not trained with the full squad.
