Didier Drogba retires from international football

The Ivory Coast captain has announced his international retirement.

Ivory Coast legend Didier Drogbahas announced his retirement from
international football. The 36-year-old striker, who made his debut
for Les Éléphantsback in 2002 and has captained his national side for
the last eight years, posted the following message on Twitter:

Drogba retires as Ivory Coast'sall-time third-most capped player, with
only Didier Zokoraand Kolo Touré having made more than Drogba's 104
international appearances. He's scored over twice as many goals
astheir next highest international scorer, Ibrahima Bakayoko.

The striker may well be ending his international involvement in the
hope of prolonging his domestic career, with the veteran having just
returned to Chelseaafter spells in Chinaand Turkey.

Ivory Coast will no doubt miss the leadership qualities of their
long-serving captain, though fortunately the likes of the
comparatively youthful Wilfried Bonyand Lacina Traoré are ready to
step up and fill his boots in attack.
