THREE persons were feared dead yesterday in Benin City, after a storey
building belonging to Christ Chosen Church of God located at Usama
street, Uzebu quarters in Benin City collapsed.
The Edo state Police Commissioner, Folunso Adebanjo who was at the
scene expressed shock over the incident, saying that the Command would
investigate the cause of the incident.
As at the time of filling this report, a dead body was recovered from
the debris but two persons were still trapped inside the building
which served as offices and residential building to officials of the
church.
Vanguard reported that nine workers hired at N3000 per day were
working in the building but three went out to eat before the building
collapsed. Balogun explained that "I immediately called the governor
to intimate him and he immediately directed one of the construction
companies working around the area to send a crane which was being used
to evacuate the site. Five persons were rescued alive but two were
still feared trapped in the rubble".
The survivors were brought out with broken limbs. However,angry
residents set a bus belonging to the church ablaze and destroyed the
main church auditorium. They blamed the church for using manual labour
to demolish the building when the church officials could have hired an
excavator.
