Aftermath of April 11 Guber Election: Top Imo Politician In Trouble Over Death of Shot Policeman

The dust raised by the activities of politicians in Imo State is yet
to settle as the death of a policeman in company of a top politician
in the state (names withheld) has sparked fresh row.

Trumpeta learnt that during the conduct of the April 11 Governorship
and House of Assembly elections, a serving police officer in company
of the politician from Mbano area of the state was allegedly shot on
the leg by a security aide accompanying military commander in charge
of security in the area during the elections.

Trumpeta gathered that the politician who recently ruffled feathers in
the political hemisphere of the state is in troubled waters following
the death of the policeman who died as a result of gunshots said to
have been fired at him by a military team on election monitoring duty.

Sources disclosed that the military team on patrol stumbled onto the
convoy of the powerful politician around Isiala Mbano LGA on election
day on stop and search exercise. In the process, the military team
comprising ranking officers were said to be irked by some sensitive
election items in their custody alongside uniformed men. One of the
uniformed men in police attire was alleged to have opened a canister
when confronted by the military team before gunshot was fired at his
leg leading to a pool of blood. While the rest of the uniformed men
said to be of the police, numbering seven, were arrested, it was
gathered that men of State Security Services (SSS), who ran into the
scene facilitated the rescue of the shot policeman to the Federal
Medical Centre, FMC, Owerri, where he died days later.

Further details revealed that the deceased policeman and others
arrested in company of the political kingpin are not serving in the
state command as it was learnt that they were from Abia and Edo
commands.

While investigations continue on the circumstances surrounding the
matter, the top politician is said to have gone underground to avoid
links with the sad incident.
