Ebola: Parents Decry Continued Closure Of Schools In Imo

PARENTS and guardian have condemned the continued closure of public
primary and secondary schools in Imo State, on account of the Ebola
Virus Disease, EVD.
Some of them who spoke to Vanguard yesterday, expressed anger over the
directive by the leadership of the state wing of Nigerian Union of
Teachers, NUT, for teachers to remain at home until government
supplied personal protective equipment and other necessary tools to
all schools.

Reacting to the development, Mrs. Tina Iwuala lamented that government
always used any slightest opportunity to declare strike.

"NUT leaders in Imo State should tell the rest of us, the number of
teachers and pupils that contacted Ebola since missionary and private
schools resumed.

"I do not see why these teachers should remain endlessly at home. The
leadership of NUT can conveniently afford ordering their members to
remain at home because they are sure to get paid at the end of the
month".

She wondered why NUT failed to call for the closure of churches and
markets in the state, stressing "teachers have been going to buy their
needs from the markets, despite the outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease".

At Community Primary School, Akabo, Ikeduru local council area, a
parent who simply identified himself as Mr. Njoku, fumed that public
schools were still shut, "it is sad that the state government is yet
to make a statement on the matter. It appears government is very happy
with the ugly development"
