Seattle Sounders forward Obafemi Martins is the MLSPlayer of the Month
for September, Major League Soccer announced on Thursday. Martins
scored five goals and had an assist over the month. He joins Clint
Dempsey as Sounders to win the Player of the Month award in 2014
Dempsey was April's winner. Martins set a new single-season goals
record for Seattle, scoring 15 goals in 2014.
"I remember when I came, I wanted to help the team score goals,"
Martins told his club's official site. "I think that's what I'm doing
now," he said at training on Tuesday. "The 15 goals is not enough. We
need to be on top and we need to score more goals."
Martins is 5th among all MLS goal scorers this season. New York Red
Bulls forward Bradley Wright-Phillips leads MLS with 24 goals.
Sporting Kansas City's Dom Dwyer is in 2nd-place with 20. The LA
Galaxyduo of Robbie Keane and Gyasi Zardes take 3rd and 4th with 17
and 16 goals respectively. Martins's strike partner Dempsey is 7th on
the MLS scoring chart with 13 goals.
