PRESIDENT of the Medical and Health Workers Union, MHWUN and immediate
past Treasurer of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC , Ayuba Waba was
Saturday morning declared the new president of the Congress, amid
protest by some of the contestants including, Comrade Joe Ajaero of
the National Union of Electricity Employees, NUEE.
The aggrieved unionists are presently in a crucial meeting to
determine the next line of action.
One of the possible actions, Vanguard reports may be to withhold
allegiance to NLC until their grievances are addressed.
Labour leaders that have rejected the election results include Comrade
Joe Ajaero, two Deputy Presidential candidates, Comrades Isa Aremu and
Igwe Achese among others.
They opined that the election was skewed to favour some candidates so
as to cover acts of fraud in the body.
The retuning officer and pioneer General Secretary of NLC, Dangiwar
Aliyu while announcing the results, declared that Waba pulled 1, 695
votes of the 3115 votes to defeat his main rival, Joe Ajero of the
Nigeria Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) who polled 1,140 votes.
3119 delegates from 43 affiliate unions of the NLC were accredited for
the election.
But the aggrieved members also lamented that some delegates from the
South South and South East were disenfranchised to favour other
'anointed' candidates.
