Okorocha Shuns Signing Of Peace Accord In Imo

Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State yesterday shunned the signing of
a peace accord between security agencies and chairmen of political
parties and their governorship candidates ahead of the 2015 general
elections.

Okorocha, who was said to be in Owerri (Convention Centre) at the time
of signing the peace pact, instead sent his deputy, Prince Eze
Madumere, to represent him but Madumere was turned back and was not
naallowed to sign the pact.

Twelve other candidates of the 26 expected were absent at the event,
but the governorship candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)
and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Hon. Emeka Ihedioha
and Capt.Emmanuel Ihenacho were present and signed the pact.

Speaking at the event, the Commissioner of Police, AbdulMajid Ali
after reading out the content of the peace accord, vowed to deal with
any politician who breaches the terms of the agreement, warning that
no form of uniform or arm-carrying would be allowed on the day of
elections except licensed security agencies.

The state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Gabriel Ada, who
expressed happiness that the peace accord came to fruition after
several postponement, noted that with the signing of the agreement by
the parties, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is
now confident of conducting elections without hindrance.

Ihedioha commended the security agencies for their initiative, but
advised the police to warn the incumbent from removing the billboards
of opposition political parties and that the police should treat every
complaint without bias. Also speaking, Ihenacho urged the police to
ensure that the incumbent governor abides by the laws of the land by
not using his office to intimidate others.
