No fewer than four policemen were on Monday knocked down by a vehicle
around Ring Road, opposite the Anthony Enahoro Assembly Complex in
Benin, Edo State.
PUNCH reported that the policemen were on their way to the scene of an
accident in the area when a Toyota Camry rammed into the security
personnel.
An official of the Edo State Traffic Management Agency, Mr. Amadin
Uwas, told our correspondent that, although no life was lost, the
policemen sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the Central
Hospital in Benin.
Uwas said, "What really happened was that some officers were trying to
rescue the driver of the car that rammed into a fence. Suddenly
another car coming from Airport Road hit them."
An eyewitness, who declined mentioning his name, said that two of the
police officers who sustained injuries were taken to the University of
Benin Teaching Hospital.
"As we speak now, two of the men are in UBTH but no life was lost," he said.
Efforts to reach the police spokesperson, DSP Noble Uwoh, on the
matter, proved abortive at the time of filing the report.
