Ex-Gov.Ohakim Slams EFCC For Invading His Residence With “Paid” Journalists

A former Governor of Imo State, Chief Ikedi Ohakim, who was picked up
by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has been
released to go home after spending less than five hours at the
anti-graft agency's office.

An unsigned statement from the former governor's office Thursday
night, however, condemned the action of 'overzealous' officials of the
EFCC, who it said went ahead to invade Mr. Ohakim's Asokoro residence
in Abuja with paid media men despite turning himself in a day before,
contrary to media reports he was arrested.

"Chief Ikedi Ohakim, who was at the EFCC office few hours past five pm
yesterday (Wednesday), expressed surprise that overzealous officials
of the anti-graft Agency could go ahead to invade his house with paid
media men in order to score cheap points and achieve some credibility
stunts", the statement read.

It said having left office as governor more than four years ago, Mr.
Ohakim was investigated by the EFCC on the same charges as the present
one, as a result of the same frivolous petition sponsored by those it
called "enemies of Imo State and Igboland", who feel that their
criminal plans against the State and Ndi Igbo in general, would be
thwarted by the ex-governor.

While stressing that he is always ready to honour any invitation
extended to him by all legitimate agencies of government since he does
not have anything to hide, the former governor urged public officials
occupying sensitive positions not to allow themselves to be used as
pawns by desperate politicians.

Meanwhile, the EFCC has said it will still extend an invitation to the
former governor whenever the need arises.

Its spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, who confirmed that Ohakim was
arrested and quizzed in respect of an investigation into corrupt
enrichment while he held sway at the helm of affairs in Imo State
between 2007 and 2011, said "Ohakim was released and allowed to go, we
will call him whenever we need him".
